Attached please find a copy of
a FAX which I recently received
from Tom Gresham and his father,
Grits Gresham, and which
is self-explanatory. I felt that if
you deemed it appropriate you
could print this in Front Sight
so that this idea would be disseminated
to the members.
Maybe some of them would pick
up on this idea and begin using
it. We certainly can use all of
the help that we can muster to
try to defeat these gun bills.

"This report describes an experiment
involving sending
post cards to members of Congress
to tell them we don't want
any more gun laws. The initial
response is very favorable.
"The idea came from a meeting
I had with U.S. Congressman
Jim McCrery (R, LA.),
when he said that even when
they are all identical, when
signed, letters or cards are important
to members of Congress.
As he put it, when he
gets 5,000 letters or cards on a
subject, he listens.
"I figured that almost every
person going into a gun store or
to a shooting range would be
willing to sign two or three post
cards if the rest of the work was
already done. So, I bought cards

Letters for publication should be no
more than 350 words and may be edited
for length or clarity.

for a card is 19 cents, but
the card with the postage cost
19 cents—the cards are free!
Printing costs are additional.
"We are sending just two
cards—one to the congressman
(member of the House) and one
to President Clinton. Obviously,
if you elect to have cards
printed for the Representative
for your area plus your two
Senators, and you pay the full
19 cents for printing, the cost is
$1.14. You'll have to judge what
the traffic will bear in your
area.
"On the sales counter, next to
the cards, I put a mayonnaise
jar. I cut a slit in the lid and put
a sign on it asking for donations
of a dollar, or "whatever you
care to contribute," to help pay
for the cards. People are free to
sign the cards without contributing.
"Once the cards are signed,
the customer gives them to the
clerk, and the store mails them.
It's quick and easy.
"I put 100 cards (50 each to
the Congressman and the
President) in a small store in
our central Louisiana town on
Monday, and by Tuesday they
were all gone and we had $36
in the jar. Because we get the
printing for free, we started
getting ahead. I then printed
500 more cards. Yes, this is
costing some money out of my
pocket right now. It's an investment
I'm willing to make.
"Complaints: We already
have had people say that an organized
campaign like this carries
no weight with Congress. I
don't believe it. Each time a
registered voter (we start the
message on the card with "I'm
a registered voter...") sends a
message, I think politicians listen.
The idea is to make a vote
for gun control too hot for them.
"This plan could be put together
in a small town by one
or two people. In a larger city,
a gun club could take it on.
"The big advantage to this
plan is that we can do it
quickly! The House will vote on
the crime bill within a couple of
months. We must move quickly.
If you like this idea, do it today.
"Well, that's the whole plan.
I'm doing it in our little town of
Natchitoches, Louisiana. I also
have contacted several companies
in the gun business to get
them thinking about it. There's
