Sie wurden 2013 inGraz, Österreich erstmalig durchgeführt.Es zeigte sich aber sehrschnell, dass derartige Veranstaltungeneine große Nachfrage haben.Darauf wollen wir mit unseren innovativenVeranstaltungskonzeptenreagieren. Gleichzeitig schien unsder eingeschränkte Bezug auf einenKontinent zu wenig. So darf ich Sieebenso zum „Grand Prix of Nations“begrüßen, der nunmehr auch internationaleChöre außerhalb Europaseinschließen wird. Dass dieses Konzeptaufgegangen ist, zeigen dieAnmeldungen von rund 100 Chörenaus 32 Nationen, darunter ausLändern wie Deutschland, Großbritannien,Lettland, Türkei, Brasilien,Neuseeland, Südafrika, China undden USA.burg und dem Land Sachsen-Anhalt,Lotto Totto, marego MagdeburgerRegionalverkehrsbund, MVB MagdeburgerVerkehrsvertriebe, VolksstimmeMagdeburg, aber auch denzahlreichen fleißigen Helfern vor Ort,ohne die diese Veranstaltung nichtmöglich geworden wäre.Genau in einem Jahr werden die9. The European ChoirGames were held the first time in thecity of Graz in Austria in 2013. It soonbecame apparent that such eventsare met with enormous enthusiasmand high demand from choirs and visitorsalike. And we realized that ourinnovative event concepts hold theideal potential to respond to the overwhelmingappreciation they receive.At the same time, we felt that the limitationto only one continent wouldbe too restricting. This is why it is agreat pleasure for me today to alsowelcome you to the ”Grand Prix ofNations“, an event which is going toinvolve international choirs from outsideEurope as well. The current recordof about 100 registrations of choirsfrom 32 nations, including countrieslike Germany, Great Britain, Latvia,Turkey, Brazil, New Zealand, South Africa,China and the USA. shows thatthis concept has proved to be a successalready today.I would like to express my deep gratitudeto all those that have supportedand have been involved in the realizationof these 2 nd European ChoirGames. Daswird zweifellos auch bei den 2. EuropeanChoir Games erlebbar, wenn 100Chöre aus 32 Ländern in unserer Landeshauptstadtmusizieren werden. Europaist genauso vielfältig wie seine Musik,die nun eine Woche lang erlebt werdenkann. Außerdem bin ich sicher, dass dieStadt Magdeburg eine aufmerksameGastgeberin sein wird. Die Musik gehörtunlöslich zu ihrer reichen Kultur, die sichüber mehr als ein Jahrtausend erstreckt.Das Fest ist aber auch eine wunderbareGelegenheit für ganz Sachsen-Anhalt,sich als Land der Musik zu präsentierenund so zu seinem Gelingen beizutragen.Ich danke den vielen Ehrenamtlichen,ohne die die Vorbereitung und Durchführungeines so großen Ereignissesgar nicht möglich wären. DieLandeshauptstadt von Sachsen-Anhaltliegt im Herzen Deutschlands und damitin einer Region, die über eine reiche kulturelleTradition verfügt. Vor 500 Jahrenläutete Martin Luther mit seinen Thesendie Reformation ein. WeltberühmteKomponisten wie Schütz, Bach, Händel,Telemann, Mendelssohn Bartholdy, umnur einige wenige zu nennen, wurdenin dieser Gegend Mitteldeutschlandsgeboren oder wirkten hier.Sie, liebe Sängerinnen und Sänger, bewegensich zudem auch in einem Land,das nach 1945 mit seiner Chortraditioneine eigene Geschichte geschriebenhat. Maßgeblich trug dazu der Rundfunk-JugendchorWernigerode bei. AlsGründer und langjähriger Leiter desChores war es mir Freude und Bedürfnis,junge Menschen intensiv, auf hohemkünstlerischem Niveau musikalisch zubilden, sie vor allem aber für das Singenund die Musik zu begeistern. And it was herein the region of Middle Germany whereworld-famous composers like Schütz,Bach, Händel, Telemann, MendelssohnBartholdy, to mention only a few, wereeither born or rose to excellence in theirprofession.When visiting Saxony-Anhalt and theMagdeburg region, dear choristers andsingers, you are also coming to an area ofGermany that, in particular since 1945,has been able to leave a lasting imprinton the tradition and popularity of choralmusic. And it is safe to say, too, thatthe “Rundfunk-Jugendchor Wernigerode”has made significant contributionsto this remarkable history. As its founderand choral conductor that I had the pleasureof being for many years, I alwaysfelt a great joy and even urge to educateyoung persons in music and to lead themto high levels of musical artistry. Themost prominent aim of my endeavors,however, has always been to enthusethem with singing and music. The numberof people I have had the opportunityof working with over the years may wellrun into thousands. V., dessen bislanggrößter Erfolg es war, die OlympischeIdee auf die Chormusik zu übertragen.Die Chorolympiade 2000 in Linz (Österreich)war der Beginn einer chorolympischenBewegung. The INTERKULTUREvent Series has meanwhile becomeknown throughout the world for itshigh artistic and organizational standardsand as a concept for the choirsand choir enthusiasts worldwide. Theseevents are organized by INTERKULTUR,a non-profit organization based in Germany.INTERKULTUR´s biggest success todate was to bring the antique Olympicidea to the choral community. TheChoir Olympics 2000 in Linz, Austriawas the beginning of a Choir Olympicmovement, with subsequent events inBusan, Republic of Korea in 2002, andBremen, Germany in 2004. This successcontinued as the “World Choir Games”in Xiamen, China in 2006, Graz, Austriain 2008, Shaoxing, China in 2010, andCincinnati, USA in 2012. In 2014, theWorld Choir Games were held in Riga,Latvia and marked the biggest eventin the history of the choir Olympic ideaattracting 27,000 participants. In 2016,the World Choir Games will come tothe Olympic city of Sochi in Russia.Another milestone in the history ofINTERKULTUR was to establish a WorldChampionship for choirs. The firstWorld Choir Championships debutedin 2009 in the Province of Gyeongnam,Republic of Korea, followed by theWorld Choir Championships for Youthand Young Adults in July 2011 in Graz,Austria. Graz again was the host cityfor an INTERKULTUR event, the first EuropeanChoir Games and the “Songs ofSpirit Festival” were held in July 2013.The second edition of this Europeanversion of the World Choir Games willbe held now in Magdeburg togetherwith the first Grand Prix of Nations.The IdeaINTERKULTUR has become the symbolfor a unique artistic idea, consisting of anew interpretation concerning the executionof choir festivals. In comparisonto traditional meritorious choir competitionsthat only invite international elitechoirs to take part; the INTERKULTURcompetitions are open to all non-professionalchoirs. Choirs from all over theworld, interested in gaining internationalfestival and competition experience,can compete according to their level ofartistic achievement. The Artistic Committeeputs emphasis on the presence ofthe highest level of choral performers aswell as on the presence of the greatestdiversity of choirs in all competitions.This new type of competition has beencopied by numerous organizations inthe past two decades. With the idea toorganize the World Choir Games, formerlyknown as “Choir Olympics” biannually,INTERKULTUR has opened a doorto new impulses and perspectives for thenational and international choral movement.

EuropeanChoir Games & Grand Prix ofNations 2015“ in Magdeburg entstandim Rahmen eines Studienprojektsdes Fachbereichs Ingenieurwissenschaftenund Industriedesign ander Hochschule Magdeburg Stendal.Aus einem internen Wettbewerb mitunterschiedlichen Designideen wurdedas Konzept von Diplom-KünstlerAndreas Köppe ausgewählt.Wesentliches Gestaltungselementist das Motiv der Magdeburger Halbkugeln.Otto von Guericke (1602 –1686) wies mit seinem Experiment,zwei massive Halbkugeln nur durchein erzeugtes Vakuum im Innenraumzusammenzuhalten, die Wirkungdes Luftdrucks nach. Selbst dievereinte Kraft von sechzehn Pferdenwar nicht in der Lage, die Kugeln auseinanderzureißen.In Anlehnung daran wird die geometrischeForm der Medaillen durchzwei Halbkreise getrennt durch einenSteg in der Mitte bestimmt. Beiden Trophäen symbolisieren zweiHalbkugeln getrennt durch einenRing das berühmte Magdeburger Experiment.Vorder- und Rückseite der Medailleverbindet eine, an die alte Goldschmiedekunstdes Granulierenserinnernde Punktgrafik. Auf derVorderseite befinden sich, in freierBewegung festgehalten scheinbarwinzige Kügelchen, die sich auf derRückseite zu einer, dreidimensionalwirkenden Form sortieren.Dieses Motiv wird bei der Trophäein Form einer mundgeblasenenund tatsächlich halbierten Glaskugel,die von Stahlringen fixiert wird,aufgenommen. Der Innenraum derzusammengesetzten Magdeburger-Halbkugeln wird sichtbar. Doch es istnichts zu sehen, außer die Effekte derLichtbrechung durch das handwerklichhergestellte Glas.Der Betrachter wird sich eventuellfragen, ob in den Halbkugeln tatsächlichein Vakuum herrscht. Diesichtbare Wandstärke des Glasesund der versiegelte Verschluss desBlaslochs der Kugel könnten diesenSchluss zulassen.Wenn nicht, dann ist darin immerhinMagdeburger Luft.The design concept of the medals andtrophies for the 2 nd European ChoirGames & Grand Prix of Nations 2015 inMagdeburg was part of a study projectof the Faculty of Engineering and IndustrialDesign at the university “HochschuleMagdeburg Stendal”. Out of acouple of design ideas that arose in aninternal competition within the faculty,the concept of graduate artist AndreasKöppe was selected.Essential design element is the motiveof the Magdeburg hemispheres. Ottovon Guericke (1602 - 1686) had proventhe effect of air pressure with his experimentthat two massive hemispherescould be hold together only by a vacuumcreated in the interior. Even thecombined strength of sixteen horses

The trophies symbolize the famousMagdeburg Experiment with thetwo hemispheres separated by a ring.For the front and back of the medalthe craftsmen technique dot graphicwas used, which reminds of the granulationtechnique used by goldsmith inearlier times. On the front, tiny spheresseemingly held in free movement,which unite to a three-dimensionallookingfigure on the back.This motif is taken up at the trophyin form of a hand-blown and actuallyhalved glass globe, which is fixed bysteel rings. The interior of the compositeMagdeburg hemispheres is visible.But there is nothing to see except theeffects of light refraction through theglass.The viewer will wonder perhaps if thereis actually a vacuum in the hemispheres.The visible thickness of the glassand the sealed closure of the blowholecould allow this conclusion.If not, then it is, after all, Magdeburgair.
