were completely changed in 1999 to the new design 1L443H for better
overall Float Check Valve Assembly performance. The Float Check Valve is

In Hornell, NY
Also known as “The Maple
City” for its many maple
trees, Hornell is a small
railroad and farming town,
snuggled in the grassy hills
of the Canisteo Valley in
western New York State.
Six years ago, the city of
Hornell installed a Smith &
Loveless Wet Well Mounted
Pump Station near a new
shopping plaza just off
Route 36. As retail stores,
a supermarket and a
Wal-Mart quickly opened in
the new mall area, the
pump station’s daily flow of
wastewater rose to an
average of 165 GPM.
The new mall area was the
only one of its kind, so many
surrounding towns used
the retail outlets for
shopping and recreation.
The pump station’s four-inch
piping constantly found
itself passing large amounts
clogging material.

Smith & Loveless’ Compound Vacuum Gauge
reads both vacuum and/or pressure and comes in
heavy-duty glycerin filled and standard vacuum
models. It is used as a diagnostic tool for Wet
Well Mounted Pump Stations. It easily mounts in
the gauge port next to the solenoid valve in the
vacuum priming system. Check to see if you have
at least one per pump station that meets its flow
conditions.

. Flooded Suction
Pump Seal Filter
In 1996, the Smith & Loveless Seal
Filter was changed to the 1L485 (seen
right) in order to provide a larger filtration volume
than the previous version 1L371. The seal filter
element surface area jumped from 1 square inch
(1L371) to 6 square inches of filter area. This greatly
lengthens the time between needed to clean or
change out the seal water filter element. The 1L485
Seal Filter is used on all of Smith & Loveless’ Flooded
Suction Pumps. Both the PISTA ® Turbo Grit Pump and
Smith & Loveless Underground Pump Stations feature
this type of pump. No piping changes are required to
convert from the 1L371 to the 1L485.

rags and those bi-fold paper
towels that were binding
the pumps up every time.”
When the frequency of
Panter’s visits to unclog the
Wal-Mart station’s pumps
began to increase to once
per month, as well as
increased city operation
and maintenance costs,
Panter began searching for
a solution. He contacted
Smith & Loveless’ After
Market Division in November
2000, and was introduced
to the X-PELLER, a new
impeller designed for
extreme clogging problems
like his application.
With the winter 2000
holidays approaching, two
new Smith & Loveless
X-PELLERs shipped at
the beginning of December
to Hornell and installed
almost immediately. After
the easy installation with no
modifications to the existing
equipment, Panter noticed
the obvious difference in
the new impellers. He didn’t
have to unclog them.
As of December 2001,
Panter has not had to
unclog the X-PELLER even
once. “Maple City” is now
saving valuable time and
money each month
because of their Smith &
Loveless X-PELLERs.
According to Panter, “We
are very happy with our
new X-PELLERs. They
have put us way ahead of
the game!”

Symptoms Of
A Defective
Mechanical
Seal
The role of the Mechanical
Seal is to isolate the liquid
inside the pump from the
pump motor.
The two most common
symptoms of a defective
mechanical seal:
• Water leaking around the
motor shaft.
• Priming problems
If you view water leaking
around the motor shaft this
is usually a good indicator
that the mechanical seal
requires replacement. You
can check this by viewing
the motor shaft at the
motor adapter.
If you are having priming
problems, troubleshoot the
priming system first. If the
mechanical seal has been
installed properly, the
source of your priming
problem will typically be
something else. If you’ve
checked the priming system
and you’re still having
problems, then it is time to
check the mechanical seal
for heat or mechanical
fractures.

Just like its single seal little brother, the DAMTITE ® Double Mechanical
Seal was designed to have the longest seal life of any in the industry. Used
on all Smith & Loveless flooded suction pumps found on Custom Series,
DUO-DUCT ® and CAPSULAR ® Underground Pump Stations, it comes in
three sizes, which is dependent upon the shaft size.
PARTS TIP: Replace the Seal Housing Gasket or Quad Ring (page 8),

Note how many volute
gaskets you remove when
taking apart your rotating
assembly. You will need to
reinstall the same number
and thickness to prevent
rubbing during pump
operation. Before turning
your pump back to full
operation, bump the motor
to see if you hear any
rubbing and to check for
correct motor rotation. If
there is rubbing, you will
need to add more volute
gaskets. If the rotation is
incorrect, rewire it for
correct rotation.

Cleaning
Electrodes
Smith & Loveless’ Customer
Service Team has an
electrode cleaning tip. They
recommend you keep a
bucket full of a water and
liquid detergent solution in
the back of your service
vehicle. (Lid for the bucket
recommended) When you
remove the electrode, swap
it out with one that has been
in the traveling bucket of
water and liquid detergent.
As you make your daily
rounds, the vehicle’s motion
will help clean the electrode.
This does require that you
have a few extra spare
electrodes, but it makes
electrode cleaning much
simpler.
qq. CORROSION BLOCKER: : Sacrificial
Anode Pack
Stop corrosion in its tracks with the Smith & Loveless Sacrificial Anode
Pack. This magnesium-type 17 pound pack includes a 30 foot copper lead
wire that attaches to the structure that is being protected from corrosion.
This sacrificial anode pack is used for corrosion protection on all buried
pump stations and Recessed Wet Well Mounted Pump Stations, along with
any wastewater treatment plant or water treatment plant buried in the
ground. The sacrificial anode extends the life of the exposed metal by
slowing the corrosion process. If you don’t know when your sacrificial
anode pack was last updated, order and install one today.
PARTS TIP: Replacement of any sacrificial anode pack is recommended a
minimum of every seven (7) years, more often in some soil.
