<strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong> is pleased to announce its intention to offer the<br />

International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme.<br />

This is an ideal pathway for students planning to enter respected universities<br />

in the UK, USA, Canada and other countries in the northern hemisphere.<br />

<strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong> will continue to offer the Cambridge IGCSE and A-levels<br />

alongside the planned IB Diploma, thus becoming the only New Zealand<br />

school to offer a choice of two international senior school qualifications<br />

New Zealand’s top co-educational senior school<br />

<strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong> is amongst New Zealand’s top academic schools.<br />

From its inception in 1995 as New Zealand’s only specialist pre-university<br />

centre, the <strong>College</strong> has become a focus for educational success. It has<br />

consistently ranked as the top co-educational senior school in the country.<br />

A specialist pre-university centre<br />

and direct contact with the Dean who will follow the IB students through to<br />

A total of 49 Top in the World and 143 Top in New Zealand awards<br />

2011 in the Cambridge International Examinations. In addition,<br />

Extra-curricular choices<br />

<strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s reputation for its music and performing arts is<br />

widespread. <strong>The</strong>re are a number of active music groups, including a<br />

chamber group, a vocal group, a guitar group, a jazz ensemble as well as<br />

rock and stage bands.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are two major productions each year: A play and a musical<br />

production. Professional directors and choreographers bring out the very<br />

best student performances. <strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers a wide range of<br />

activities to provide each student with the opportunity to meet other<br />

students, work as part of a team or develop leadership skills.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> Leadership group, the equivalent of prefects is predominant<br />

in organising a vast number of activities within the <strong>College</strong>. <strong>The</strong>se include<br />

debating, senior scholars, young enterprise, the social awareness group<br />

and a student newspaper. Overseas trips have included trips to Europe,<br />

Australia, the United States, Japan, Tonga, South America and Africa.<br />

Archery, athletics, basketball, cricket, mountain biking, netball, soccer,<br />

IB Diploma Programme - IBDP (2 years)<br />

<strong>The</strong> IBDP is a two-year pre-university academic course that is widely<br />

recognised and highly regarded by respected universities all over the<br />

world. Internationally mobile students are able to transfer into the<br />

IB Diploma Programme from other IB World schools, as well as<br />

from other school systems.<br />

Diploma Requirements<br />

To be awarded the IB Diploma, students study six subjects, three<br />

at Standard and three at Higher Level ensuring breadth and depth.<br />

Students normally choose one subject from each of <strong>Group</strong>s 1 to 5,<br />

their sixth subject may be chosen from <strong>Group</strong> 6, or the student may<br />

choose another subject from <strong>Group</strong>s 1 to 5. Environmental Systems<br />

and Societies may be selected instead of a Science or a Humanities<br />

subject. In addition three core requirements must be satisfied. <strong>The</strong>ory<br />

of Knowledge (TOK) ; an Extended Essay ( EE ) and participation in<br />

Creativity, Action, Service (CAS).<br />

Variations to this course selection may be approved in consultation with<br />

the IB Co-ordinator.<br />

<strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong> plans to offer the following IBDP subjects in 2014:<br />

<strong>Group</strong> 1: Native Language - Literature in English, Korean, Chinese or<br />

other native languages<br />

<strong>Group</strong> 2: Learned Language - ab initio (beginner) Chinese, Japanese or<br />

French; and English B, Japanese B, Chinese B or French B<br />

<strong>Group</strong> 3: Individuals & Societies - Economics, History and Psychology<br />

<strong>Group</strong> 4: Experimental Sciences - Biology, Chemistry, Physics and<br />

Environmental Systems and Societies (an interdisciplinary<br />

subject straddling G 3 and G 4)<br />

<strong>Group</strong> 5: Mathematical Studies, Standard Level Mathematics or<br />

Higher Level Mathematics<br />

<strong>Group</strong> 6: Visual Arts & Music<br />

Core: <strong>The</strong>ory of Knowledge; Extended Essay; Creativity, Action,<br />

Service<br />

TOK is a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on<br />

the nature of knowledge by critically examining ways of knowing<br />

(perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of<br />

knowledge (scientific, mathematical and historical).<br />

<strong>The</strong> Extended Essay offers the opportunity for students to investigate<br />

a topic of special interest, usually one of the student’s six DP subjects,<br />

and acquaints them with the independent research and writing skills<br />

expected at tertiary level.<br />

CAS requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing<br />

real tasks beyond the classroom.<br />

IB Examinations<br />

Performance in the IBDP is assessed through a variety of methods.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se include both internal assessment of coursework by teachers and<br />

by external assessment, typically involving written examinations at the<br />

end of the two-year programme in May.<br />

In each examination, the student is graded on a scale of 1 (minimum) to<br />

7 (maximum). <strong>The</strong> award of the IB Diploma requires students to meet<br />

defined standards and conditions. <strong>The</strong>se include a minimum total of<br />

24 points and the satisfactory completion of the Core.<br />

Success in the IB examinations may qualify a student for either direct<br />

entry into a three-year university programme or for advanced placement/<br />

credit at a four-year institution.<br />

<strong>The</strong> desirable attributes of an IB student are those who:<br />

n Show a strong desire to achieve academically<br />

n Show a commitment to challenging their learning academically and<br />

their personal development outside the classroom<br />

n Show an excellent work ethic and positive attitude to study<br />

n Demonstrate an open mindedness and a willingness to be engaged<br />

in cultural exchange and understanding<br />

n Show an empathy for others and a willingness to work towards<br />

helping those less fortunate<br />

n Show a desire to work towards becoming genuine global citizens<br />

who are prepared to succeed in the 21st century.<br />

Proposed <strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong> IB Diploma Programme (2 years)*<br />

Start date: Monday 28th July 2014<br />

Finish date: May 2016<br />

For direct entry into the IB Diploma, the following criteria will apply:<br />

English entry criteria:<br />

Minimum IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.<br />

An interview may be required.<br />

<strong>Academic</strong> entry criteria:<br />

- IGCSE/GCSE/O Level and in some cases AS<br />

- IB Middle Years’ Programme (MYP)<br />

- NCEA Level 1 or Level 2<br />

- Completion of Grade/Year 10, <strong>Senior</strong> 1 (Asia/11 & 12 year schooling),<br />

or equivalent.<br />

<strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a candidate school* for the Diploma<br />

Programme. This school is pursuing authorisation as an IB World<br />

School. <strong>The</strong>se are schools that share a common philosophy -<br />

a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education<br />

that <strong>ACG</strong> <strong>Senior</strong> <strong>College</strong> believes is important for our students.<br />

* Only schools authorised by the IB Organisation can offer any of its three academic<br />
