ACG Senior College is pleased to announce its intention to offer the
International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme.
This is an ideal pathway for students planning to enter respected universities
in the UK, USA, Canada and other countries in the northern hemisphere.
ACG Senior College will continue to offer the Cambridge IGCSE and A-levels
alongside the planned IB Diploma, thus becoming the only New Zealand
school to offer a choice of two international senior school qualifications

From its inception in 1995 as New Zealand’s only specialist pre-university
centre, the College has become a focus for educational success. It has

building with easy walking access to art galleries, the Auckland City Library,

A specialist pre-university centre
ACG Senior College provides excellent preparation for university study by
focusing on the progress of senior school students. Each student has regular
and direct contact with the Dean who will follow the IB students through to
the completion of their course. The IB Co-ordinator designate ensures good
oversight of their academic progress as well as providing guidance, advice
and support.
ACG Senior College teachers represent some of the very best in their subject

Outstanding academic results
ACG Senior College students have consistently achieved
outstanding results, both personally and against national and
international academic standards.
A total of 49 Top in the World and 143 Top in New Zealand awards
were gained by ACG Senior College students between 2005 and
2011 in the Cambridge International Examinations. In addition,
ACG Senior College students have achieved Top in the World in
Art & Design nine years in a row.

Extra-curricular choices
ACG Senior College’s reputation for its music and performing arts is
widespread. There are a number of active music groups, including a
chamber group, a vocal group, a guitar group, a jazz ensemble as well as
rock and stage bands.
There are two major productions each year: A play and a musical
production. Professional directors and choreographers bring out the very
best student performances. ACG Senior College offers a wide range of
activities to provide each student with the opportunity to meet other
students, work as part of a team or develop leadership skills.
The Senior Leadership group, the equivalent of prefects is predominant
in organising a vast number of activities within the College. These include
debating, senior scholars, young enterprise, the social awareness group
and a student newspaper. Overseas trips have included trips to Europe,
Australia, the United States, Japan, Tonga, South America and Africa.
ACG Senior College sports teams include:
Archery, athletics, basketball, cricket, mountain biking, netball, soccer,
swimming, table tennis and water polo.

The Pre-IB is either an intensive half year or one-year programme aimed
at preparing students for direct entry into the IB Diploma.
Subject groups include:
Group 1: Literature Skills, including preparation for the Extended Essay
Group 2: Language Studies - English, Japanese or French as a second
language
Group 3: Social Sciences - Economics, History and Psychology
Group 4: Experimental Sciences - Biology, Chemistry and Physics

IB Diploma Programme - IBDP (2 years)
The IBDP is a two-year pre-university academic course that is widely
recognised and highly regarded by respected universities all over the
world. Internationally mobile students are able to transfer into the
IB Diploma Programme from other IB World schools, as well as
from other school systems.
Diploma Requirements
To be awarded the IB Diploma, students study six subjects, three
at Standard and three at Higher Level ensuring breadth and depth.
Students normally choose one subject from each of Groups 1 to 5,
their sixth subject may be chosen from Group 6, or the student may
choose another subject from Groups 1 to 5. Environmental Systems
and Societies may be selected instead of a Science or a Humanities
subject. In addition three core requirements must be satisfied. Theory
of Knowledge (TOK) ; an Extended Essay ( EE ) and participation in
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS).
Variations to this course selection may be approved in consultation with
the IB Co-ordinator.
ACG Senior College plans to offer the following IBDP subjects in 2014:
Group 1: Native Language - Literature in English, Korean, Chinese or
other native languages
Group 2: Learned Language - ab initio (beginner) Chinese, Japanese or
French; and English B, Japanese B, Chinese B or French B
Group 3: Individuals & Societies - Economics, History and Psychology
Group 4: Experimental Sciences - Biology, Chemistry, Physics and
Environmental Systems and Societies (an interdisciplinary
subject straddling G 3 and G 4)
Group 5: Mathematical Studies, Standard Level Mathematics or
Higher Level Mathematics
Group 6: Visual Arts & Music
Core: Theory of Knowledge; Extended Essay; Creativity, Action,
Service
TOK is a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on
the nature of knowledge by critically examining ways of knowing
(perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of
knowledge (scientific, mathematical and historical).
The Extended Essay offers the opportunity for students to investigate
a topic of special interest, usually one of the student’s six DP subjects,
and acquaints them with the independent research and writing skills
expected at tertiary level.
CAS requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing
real tasks beyond the classroom.

IB Examinations
Performance in the IBDP is assessed through a variety of methods.
These include both internal assessment of coursework by teachers and
by external assessment, typically involving written examinations at the
end of the two-year programme in May.
In each examination, the student is graded on a scale of 1 (minimum) to
7 (maximum). The award of the IB Diploma requires students to meet
defined standards and conditions. These include a minimum total of
24 points and the satisfactory completion of the Core.
Success in the IB examinations may qualify a student for either direct
entry into a three-year university programme or for advanced placement/
credit at a four-year institution.

n Show an excellent work ethic and positive attitude to study
n Demonstrate an open mindedness and a willingness to be engaged
in cultural exchange and understanding

n Show a desire to work towards becoming genuine global citizens
who are prepared to succeed in the 21st century.
Proposed ACG Senior College IB Diploma Programme (2 years)*
Start date: Monday 28th July 2014
Finish date: May 2016
For direct entry into the IB Diploma, the following criteria will apply:
English entry criteria:
Minimum IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.
An interview may be required.
Academic entry criteria:
- IGCSE/GCSE/O Level and in some cases AS
- IB Middle Years’ Programme (MYP)
- NCEA Level 1 or Level 2
- Completion of Grade/Year 10, Senior 1 (Asia/11 & 12 year schooling),
or equivalent.
ACG Senior College is a candidate school* for the Diploma
Programme. This school is pursuing authorisation as an IB World
School. These are schools that share a common philosophy -
a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education
that ACG Senior College believes is important for our students.
* Only schools authorised by the IB Organisation can offer any of its three academic
programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme
(MYP), or the Diploma Programme (and in addition the IB Career-related
Certificate). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted.

Students who have completed two terms of NZ Year 11
and wish to apply are required to sit an academic entry test.
Students must have recent reports that indicate they are
competent in a range of subjects and have a commitment
to working hard and being involved in all aspects of
