Message from the
Principal, Ms Bora
What an inspirational
newsletter
which, yet again,
proves not only
our students’ academic
successes
but also demonstrates
their potential in so many other
areas of life. Well done to everybody!
We look forward to an even more impressive
2013, with a focus on the RSA 21st
Century Competences and the IB Learner
Profile.
As always, NO student should be saying
they have no homework; ALL students
should be reading, revising and practising
questions (especially science) EVERY night!
WA sparkles at the
Christmas Show
Westminster Academy brought the year
to a close with a glittering display of the
talents of the Expressive Arts department
in front of an audience of students,
parents, staff and VIP guests.
The event kicked off with a presentation
of the Mapping Marylebone publications
to the Year 10, 11 and Sixth Form
students, who collaborated on this project
with the Architecture Foundation
and British Land. The show continued
with singing, dancing, drama and music
performances
and the evening culminated
with delicious festive food prepared
by the GCSE Hospitality and Catering
students.
BTEC music students Rokas, Steffen and
Matthew tell us more…
At the Christmas Show we performed as
an ensemble playing ‘Payphone.’ It was
really fun playing to the VIP guests including
Paralympian, Louise Sugden. It
was exciting to perform in front of family
and friends; we were nervous to start
with but we developed our confidence as
the piece went on.
We would like to perform in the show
again as we really enjoyed ourselves and
the sausage rolls and drinks were very
nice at the end of the performance.
Fatma and Dinuka
praised by Home Office
In November, Fatma Khalil and Dinuka Hettiarachchi,
alongside 12 other teenagers from Westminster,
were invited to the Home Office as part of
national Takeover Day. Takeover Day is valued by
the Home Office as an opportunity to directly engage
with young people in Westminster and to get
a fresh perspective from them on the work of the
department.
The students spent the day shadowing senior officials
and ministers. They had the chance to attend
a debate at the House of Lords with Lord Taylor,
as well as a meeting on legal highs with Jeremy
Browne, Crime Prevention Minister.
Fatma and Dinuka were both given excellent feedback
by staff at the Home Office. Fatma was chosen
to be interviewed for their internal magazine
and she impressed with her articulate answers.
She spent the day shadowing Jeremy Browne and
said: “My day (was) really interesting. I was really
nervous about going to the meeting to start with,
but everyone was really friendly. I also had the
chance to talk to Jeremy Browne afterwards about
his work as a minister, which was great. Before
this, I would not have thought about a career in
government, but maybe now I will. I had no idea
there were so many projects for young people interested
in the civil service, so there should definitely
be more advertising to tell young people
about them.”
Insight into TV industry on
BBC Experience Day
On Thursday 8 th November, the BBC organised a one-day
introduction and set of workshops for 16-18 year olds. Dr
Rana arranged for me to attend this experience day. It was a
Year 8s brave the
terrifying Woman in Black
On Thursday 29th November,
a group of Year 8s went
with Ms. Rigg and Mr. Long
to the Fortune Theatre in
Covent Garden to see a performance
of The Woman in
Black. To get there we went
through Covent Garden
which looked very rich and
exciting, especially all lit up
at night. We saw lots of
amazing things, like a Robot
that talked to you, human
statues and a man sitting on the air… AWESOME!!!
Before the show, everyone was really nervous because we
didn’t know how scary it would be, but we never expected it
to be that terrifying! There were parts where we couldn’t
help but scream out loud. I think it even made Ms. Rigg and
Mr. Long scream!
We had lots of fun on this reward trip and it has really
helped us understand the horror genre. Can’t wait for the
next trip!
By Bruno Jauad, Year 8
very interesting day during which I got to learn about the television
industry.
After this amazing
day, I appreciate
all the work
the BBC does;
there is an awful
lot of backstage
hard work that
goes into a 6-
minute news bulletin! Thank you Mr Robbins for taking me
and Dr Rana for arranging!!
Christmas Partying
On Thursday 13 th December, we had a Christmas
reward party for Year 9 and 10 students. We were
invited because we had
achieved a 3:1 positive:negative
ratio and 98% attendance. The
party was organised by Ms
Fayers and Ms Fox and they took
tremendous effort in decorating the Sky Dining
room in festive cheer.
It was a very enjoyable night. There was a disco
and we danced to very good music played by Mr
Van Der Hoeven. There were also very nice games
for us to play as well as nail painting.
After that, we ate some of the yummy snacks and
drinks which were provided for us to enjoy. At the
end of the party I was awarded a prize for the best
costume. After this we went home.
I really want to thank Ms Fayers and Ms Fox for making
the party so memorable and wonderful.
By Simrah Jaweira, Year 10
The parties continued
the following week with
the reward Christmas
party for Year 7 and 8s,
organised by Mr Gothard,
Miss Pond and
Mr Thomas, who turned
the market place into a
glitzy grotto of games, food and dance floor classics.
The festively dressed students looked spectacular!
Congratulations to Dominique Clancy who won a
prize for her superb fancy dress. Ron Kavaja was
also a prize-winner for his unbeatable table tennis
skills!
Reward trip to Polar Express
Last term we went on a
Year 8 reward trip to Lexi
cinema to watch Polar Express.
About 40 students
w e n t
and we had popcorn and drinks;
it was so much fun. We would like
to thank Miss Pond and can’t
wait for the next trip…
Cool Yule @ WA
December saw
lots of opportunities for all
at WA to enter the spirit of
Christmas!
We were very fortunate to
have a real tree donated to
us, which student services
helped to decorate, and
our wooden trees in the
market place had decorations
especially made for
them by Year 7 humanities
students. In the last week
of term the catering team
prepared a wonderful
Christmas dinner complete
with mince pies,
Christmas pudding and
crackers. Beautiful Christmas
cards, designed by
Misbah Ali, Aysha Syeda,
Zienel Syboune Smith, Fiona
Hashani, and Nurfarahin
Zulkurnain. were on
sale, raising money for a
local charity. Also on sale
for charity were raffle tickets
to win a laptop.
If you don’t yet have your
raffle ticket, do not panic
as they are still available to
buy for a limited period in
News from the English Department
GCSE update
The English teachers and students are working hard
this year to ensure that we achieve higher than the
82% C and above we achieved last year. To that end,
Year 11 students have worked particularly hard on
completing the four controlled assessments that are
worth 60% of their GCSE and, subject to moderation,
85% of students have scored a C or
higher. This is a wonderful achievement
for the students and their
teachers. Some Year 11 students will
be finishing the GCSE in January and
have their crucial final exam on January
10 th . Additionally, Miss Fox’s and Miss Wasley’s
Year 10 class have embarked upon the early entry
GCSE and are due to finish this summer. They too
have been working incredibly hard on their controlled
assessments and for their poetry exam on January
16 th . We hope that over 20% of the year group will
achieve 2xA/A* grades in English Language and Literature,
which is well above national average as well as
improving upon the top grades achieved last year. We
wish all students taking their final English exams this
year the very best of luck!
Reading
Last term saw the launch of the new
book box scheme. Each tutor group now
has their own mini library, which has been stocked
with some of the best, current and most highly regarded
literature around at the moment! We would like for
all students to be reading at least one of these books
per term - all tutors will be helping to monitor this and
to continue to help our students improve their literacy
skills. This coming term will see the launch of the reading
passports, World Book Day, World Book Night and
exciting prizes and incentives for reading. We would
like to ask all parents to assist the
students and their teachers and tutors
in promoting WA’s drive for reading:
it is one of the most important
aspects of our students’ education!
Theatre
Last term, the English department continued its tradition
of taking students to the theatre! We believe it is so important
for our students to experience theatre and to understand
how a text can be brought to life - particularly
plays which are obviously meant to be performed!
Mr Cosgrove took his Year 9 class to a special production
of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’, a unique production
in that it was a one-man show, in which one character
acted as over 20 different characters! It was fascinating
for the students to see how a story set in the
trenches in WW1 could be brought to life by just one actor,
a couple of props and no set design or lighting. It
wasn’t a particularly ‘showy’ production but was hugely
emotive. The students were fortunate enough to have
been invited to a pre-show talk by the director where he
explained the process behind the adaptation. He was
asked some great questions, particularly by Iman who
asked him whether film adaptations were unfairly more
popular than theatre ones.
Miss Fox took her Year 7 class to a seasonal performance
of ‘Cinderella’ as the students had been studying
fairy tales in class. There was also a reward trip to the
pantomime as well as a terrifying trip to the Fortune Theatre
to see the horror story ‘The Woman in Black’ for the
Year 8s (see page 2 to read more)! There are many more
theatre trips planned for the
rest of the year. If you would
like any more information,
please ask your child’s English
teacher.
Football Special!
Year 8 Westminster League Champions!
This football season for the Year 8 football team has been
an amazing one indeed. Where last year they finished last in
the table, in this year’s competition they finished first, beating
opponents such as City Westminster and, of course, our
rivals and last year’s league winners, Paddington Academy.
Throughout the season the boys have shown real determination
and passion to succeed after last year’s failure. This
could not have happened if it weren’t for the team’s determination
to train through their lunch times while other year
groups played for fun, coupled together with new additions
to the team: Jack Manning and Oliver Griffiths. Leonardo Da
Silva revitalised the team and gave them the cutting edge to
go on and bring in the honours this year. Jack Manning captained
a new look Year 8 team starting off to a defeat to City
Westminster. However, after having tasted defeat the team
did not look back once and found the desire and hunger to
mount good wins. The team played some brilliant, beautiful
football mainly orchestrated by the born again Faysal Bettache,
who used to positive effect all the pressure that was
mounted on him from the season before and truly demonstrated
what a talented footballer he is. He set up goals in a
magnificent fashion, as well as finishing the top scorer of the
season.
This season has been a massive step up for the team as
they have learned things that they will remember for the rest
of their footballing careers. Most of all they have learned to
play as a team and win as a team because they are only one
team and that’s TEAM WA!! YEAR 8 WESTMINSTER LEAGUE
Girls Football Competition
The Year 7 Girls Football Team recently participated
in the annual Westminster Schools competition,
where they played a mixture of independent and
state schools throughout the day. The games were
fast and filled with great skill and fair play throughout,
with the best local talent on show.
The girls demonstrated good teamwork and scored
some of the best goals of the day, but narrowly
missed out on 3rd place due to goal difference during
the final game. Congratulations to all the students
involved considering this was their first competition
as a team; they represented the Academy
tremendously!
Badminton
On 25 th October, the KS3 and KS4 boys badminton
teams won the Westminster championships held at
Westminster City school. Both age groups were undefeated
in their matches, and will go through to represent
Westminster at the next stage of the competition, the
Central London finals. The KS4 team, captained by
Naseebullah Ahmadi, should be particularly congratulated
as they have now retained the Westminster championship
for 3 years running!
Basketball
The basketball team recently
had a home game against St
Georges where we lost to an
end score of 38 to 30. It was
a closely contested game but
we got off to a bad start. Coming
back strong in the second half with a good offence
and a strong defence we closed the lead and almost
caught up but unfortunately not in time. The basketball
season is coming to a close with one final basketball
game remaining. We haven’t had a fantastic season but
our highlight was definitely our game against King Solomon
where we beat them 106 to 4. The basketball team
consists of 8 players: Yunus Julwadi, Dylan Kawende,
Arta Pacuku, Kevin De Vera, Hasaneen Al-Abdalla, Mohammed
Salam Perez, Fahim Ahmed and myself (Adam
Maknassa).
Table Tennis
Students recently entered the Westminster Table Tennis
Championship for Girls, which was held at St
Marylebone School.
It was a very
close competition in
the end, with the
Westminster Academy
Team finishing in
2nd place despite
stiff opposition. Considering that they were up against
experienced students who had competed in this competition
in previous years, they rallied all the way
demonstrating some great skill. One of our councillors
– Cllr Nemeth of St John’s Wood – is a mad keen table
tennis fan and sponsored the winning trophies. He was
also impressed with our students’ display on the day
and commented with praise "Such wonderful talent
and level of skill being demonstrated by such young
talented girls."
team consisted
of Siwei Dou,
On 13 th December, the KS3 and KS4 boys table tennis
teams were winners at the Westminster Championships,
held at Paddington Academy. Both age groups
were unbeaten throughout the tournament, and pretty
much dominated proceedings from start to finish. The
boys age groups have now retained their status as
Westminster’s best for the last 2 years running.
Year 8 magic at the
Science Show
On Tuesday 18 th December students from KS3 went on a
humanities reward trip to
Westfield Cinema to watch
‘Danger in the Manger’. As
soon as we arrived at the
cinema we went to buy popcorn
and refreshments. After
that we went to settle down
in our seats to watch the
film. I really enjoyed the film because it is really funny, especially
the part where they hold school auditions for their
Christmas show. Me and the other students were picked to
go on this trip because we showed good behaviour in lessons
and worked really hard during the term.
By Zahra Al-Kinani, Year 7
On 11 th December we held a spectacular
science show. Ms McKeon had
organised the whole show and we
would like to
thank her for all
the hard work
she put in for us. We invited parents
and teachers to come and see this
wonderful science show. We performed
dangerous and fun experiments
but we were well behaved and
mature. From my point of view the
methane bubbles was the best experiment
because we could actually set
our hands on fire instead of other
objects. I hope that everyone who
attended the show had so much fun and also learnt something
new and to actually believe in science. I was one of
the scientists and
had great fun.
Jack Petchey’s “SPEAK
OUT” Challenge!
On Wednesday 12 th December, I was nominated to
go through to the Jack Petchey “Speak out” Regional
Final, which took place at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial
School. The Jack Petchey challenge is one of the
UK’s leading public speaking and communication
skills charity. The charity aims to help participants
become better communicators with a greater awareness
of the importance of speaking up. It is dedicated
to helping students improve their education and
employment
p r o s p e c t s
as well as
their desire
to use the
power
their
of
voice
to bring posi
t i v e
change.
The programme began with a short workshop where
we practised the key skills such as hand gestures,
eye contact and projection of voice. During the workshop
I got the chance to meet with other contestants
from the numerous other schools that took part.
Then the COMPETITION STARTED with all the contestants
(including me) going up to the stage and performing
our speeches in front of so many people. At
the start I was so nervous about my speech but towards
the end I was really proud of what I achieved
for my school and for myself. After all the 21 contestants
had finished, it was finally the last stage of the
Westminster and the Royal Borough of Kensington &
Chelsea Regional Final when we were presented with
certificates and prizes by the Deputy Leader of the
Council, Nicholas Paget Brown.
I would highly recommend this amazing opportunity
to all the current Year 9s. I would like to thank Miss
Rigg for helping me with preparing my speech and I
would also like to thank last year’s regional final winner,
Soumaya, for her support.
The question about what to do in the future can be
quite hard to answer especially if you don’t know all
the options. The media give a lot of attention to
going to university or doing an Apprenticeship but
there are still other options in between.
We were invited to go to KPMG where they talked
about their special School Leavers’ Programme.
The programme has a six-year duration during
which
time
you split your
time between
your job as an
accountant at
KPMG
Discovering post-18
pathways at KPMG
and
U n i v e r s i t y
study. This is,
in my opinion, a fantastic experience especially because
KPMG is a very important company (one of
the big four) and work experience there, earning
quite a good salary, looks not only amazing on your
CV but also feels great because you can have a
good amount of money to do the things you want to
do. It is a great opportunity if you don’t feel completely
comfortable with the idea of going to University
or doing an Apprenticeship and just might be
the perfect alternative.
In summary, the opportunity I got to visit KPMG
made me understand that options aren’t as narrow
as they seemed and there are other equally good
pathways to be considered as well.
Anti-Bullying Week
Westminster Academy hosted a very successful Anti
-bullying week at the end of November. Over five
days, students spent their tutor times discussing
bullying, and how we all (staff, students and the
community) have a responsibility to speak out
against bullying.
It kicked off on Monday with three excellent House
Assemblies, led by Mr Harris (Red), Ms Aiken
(Purple) and Ms Rigg
a n d M s B o a m
(Orange). The assemblies
asked students
what made them happy
in life, and the suggested
answer was
solidarity – standing
up for each other.
WA also put on several
events to mark the
week. We were very
lucky to be joined by
Only Connect, a theatre
group which works
with rehabilitated offenders. They delivered a hardhitting
but emotional workshop for 60 students, in
which they discussed the importance of making the
right decisions in school, to stay out of trouble on
t h e
streets.
WA also
sent a
d e l e g a -
tion of
students
to attend
a National
Empathy
and Compassion Conference in London’s South
Bank. Nora Zejnullahi, Nora Jamal Wadi, Rahwa,
Leona, Fjolla, Diellza, Naheda and Yasmin all attended,
accompanied by Miss Pitt. They listened to
inspiring talks including those of an ex-gang member,
the founder of the Random Acts of Kindness
movement and a headmaster who has introduced
happiness and well-being classes to his school curriculum.
Not all of the events were organised by staff. Dina Hamade,
one of our Year 11 Behaviour Monitors, came up
with the idea of an anti-bullying wall:
“The Behaviour Monitor team wanted to do something to
show how united the whole school is against bullying. Over
the week, a team of us (Khandsuren, Joanna, Soumaya,
Sarah Al-Saad, Amina, Dylan, Hassan, Tyef, Dinuka and I)
went round tutor groups, asking students to write their
own messages against bullying. We then put the best ones
up on a display in the marketplace, to show that WA is a
community which won’t accept bullying.”
Overall, I was hugely impressed and encouraged by the
maturity shown throughout the week by all our students,
especially by the quality of their discussion during tutor
time – well done to everyone involved!
Year 8s score a trip to
Wembley!
After the recent success of our Year
8 Boys Football Team winning the
Westminster Championship and
after months of
fixtures and hard work during weekly
training sessions, we needed to
celebrate. So as Year Coordinator
for Year 8s, myself and my assistant
Mr Trampnau decided to reward
the boys with an exclusive
tour of the new Wembley Stadium.
The boys were able to experience
features such as the Press Room, Changing rooms, FA
Cup and the stadium itself.
January Examinations
The January examination session will take place between
9 th -29 th January 2013.
Students should ensure they attend in full school uniform
together with any exam stationery they may need.
Examination pencil case packs are on sale from reception
for £2. Please note that if a student is issued with a
pencil case in the exam hall they will be charged £4. Examination
timetables have been sent home to all students
with exams in January. Their timetable can also be
viewed from their SLG portal page.
We wish all students the best of
luck with their examinations.
The Exam Team
The students enjoyed the experience immensely and
took enough memorable photos to cover the UK tabloids
for a whole year.
Let’s hope they keep up
this success in 2013 and
we can organise something
similar in the future.
You only live once
As part of the Year 9 curriculum, at the end of November
a man came to Westminster Academy to teach us
about belief and what paths to take for a better future,
delivering a SAY workshop entitled ’You Only Live
Once’. Moreover, the man taught us how to believe in
ourselves and to receive what we want in pride. He
specifically told us to learn by other people’s mistakes.
To work towards this, we use confidence and selfrespect:
when asking for
things be polite but not
embarrassed or shy or
you will go nowhere.
The man utilized his emotions,
expressions and
confidence to make us
reflect and give us confidence for the future. We are
thankful to him and to the language teachers as they
gave us the opportunity to learn how to have faith.
‘Succeeding means confidence and faith.’
Parental Requests
Last term, a parent asked us to bring to your attention
that Westminster Academy serves some halal meat
which has been slaughtered and prepared in breach of
the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations
1995.
Although some of the meat is halal, there are many other
non-halal food options available at Westminster Academy
for non-Muslim students to choose from. The Academy
has been consistently praised by external evaluators
for its diverse and high quality meals.
University Technical
College in Westminster
Recently a foundation has been set up in Westminster
to create opportunities for young people. One of its initiatives
is to establish a University Technical College for
14-19 year olds that will specialise in engineering and
construction, enabling students to study core subjects
at GCSE and A Level alongside technical and specialist
studies in Transport Engineering and Construction.
Westminster City Council would very much value feedback
from students and parents so would be grateful if
you could complete the short survey attached to this
newsletter and return to WA reception or fill in the survey
