Visual Target Analysis (VTA) offers a way to automate processing and cope with data deluge
VTA reduces the risk of operator fatigue by automatically alerting and cueing the movement of vehicles and
personnel. VTA shifts the focus away from pixels and towards activity, aiding operators in the difficult task
of maintaining situational awareness.

Finding the right section of video can be like looking
for a needle in a haystack. VTA eases the exploitation
process and reduces the time taken to generate an
intelligence product.

VTA Features
VTA software provides the following features:
• Automatic detection and tracking of moving
targets in EO and IR video imagery
• Augmentation of video to indicate moving targets
• Visual mosaicing provides pseudo-satellite imagery
view by stitching multiple video frames
• Geo-referencing of target tracks and visual mosaic
in UTM coordinates
• Overlay of target tracks onto visual mosaic,
or a preloaded map or satellite image
• Image stabilisation to remove platform motion
• Stabilisation of STANAG4609 metadata to
remove noise, making use of the video data
The current software is COTS (TRL6) and effective
for land scenarios. A maritime version of the
capability is under development and is scheduled to
be available late 2013.
Other features under research include automatic
pattern of life analysis making use of the
geo-referenced track data and fusion of VTA tracks
with other sensors including AIS, GMTI and EW.
VTA is being offered as a plug-in capability for existing
exploitation tools and is suitable for use with visible
band and infrared video imagery. A clearly defined
Application Programming Interface (API) allows this
new functionality to be integrated in a swift and cost
effective manner.

VTA: Opening the door to a new world of tools
Once integrated, VTA opens the door to using a number of new techniques and tools. These greatly increase
the usablity of aerial FMV. A demonstration application is available to show how these tools reduce the
amount of time taken to produce intelligence output and includes the following features:
Retrieval of video from track
Clicking on the map cues up video corresponding to that target or region on the map.

Timeline highlighting sections containing motion
Sections of video where motion occurs are highlighted to an operator, reducing the amount of video that
is necessary to review. The colour indicates the speed of the object being tracked, further reducing the amount
of video when searching for motion.
Co-ordinate readout
Since the video is geo-located there is now a tie between the video and the map. Map cursors allow the
location of any point within the video stream image to be selected and automatically the map co-ordinates are
identified. The location accuracy is increased compared to using metadata alone, since the platform motion is
compensated for using image processing.
Collateral information overlay
Geo-location of video allows collateral information to be inserted into the map and the video view.
Current events are augmented with this information, placing them in context.
