SURVIVAL & SELF-RELIANCE
LIVING ON THE EDGE
A Family’s Journey to Self-Sufficiency
by F.J. Bohan
When it comes to survival, one size definitely
does not fit all. That’s exactly what author F. J. Bohan
discovered when he and his family set out on a quest
for self-sufficiency, a journey that has lasted more
than 17 years.
Living on the Edge describes why Bohan and his
wife made the decision to pull their four sons from
public school in the East and set off in a converted
school bus to the American Southwest. On a very limited budget, the Bohans
began their new life in a tent pitched in public campgrounds. As soon
as they could, they purchased remote ranchland, on which they constructed
a rustic cabin that grew as they could afford to add on. In addition, their
homeschooling of the boys was so successful that all four received scholarships
to the schools of their choice. On their journey, the Bohans learned a
lot about living off the land and off the grid . . . and often on the edge. In this
book, the author graciously shares valuable lessons on the following:
• Keeping a wife, four boys, two dogs, and two cats happy in a tent for 18
months
• Creating power for a tent or cabin through a combination of solar panels,
car batteries, generators and oil
• Heating and cooking on woodstoves
• Finding creative ways to earn money in an insular, impoverished rural area
• Securing enough water in the desert for a family of six, plus animals, to
live on
• Erecting fences – literal and figurative ones – for privacy and security
• Raising chickens, goats, and ducks for food, while avoiding bears, bobcats,
skunks, and other country critters
SELF-RELIANCE DURING NATURAL
DISASTERS AND CIVIL UNREST
Revised and Updated
by George R. Bradford
When a disaster or civil disturbance occurs,
firefighters, police officers and paramedics quickly
become overburdened with requests to handle
simple emergencies – emergencies that every
one of us should be able to handle as they occur.
This revised and updated edition of the classic
original book will give you the knowledge to
handle nine types of crises that typically follow a disaster and motivate you
to assist your family and neighbors should a large-scale catastrophe strike
your community.
Just a few of the specific skills you will learn include how to rescue people
from building rubble and wrecked vehicles using only common tools,
fight fires with an ordinary garden hose, shut off gas and electricity quickly
and safely, set up emergency sanitation systems, seek refuge from an out-ofcontrol
fire, make contact with family and friends when standard communications
are disrupted, and much more. Throughout the book, the author
shows you how to evaluate each situation rationally and confidently and
decide when to handle the emergency yourself and when to call the authorities
for help. 8½ x 11, softcover, photos and illus., 214 pp.
Relocating to the desert, living in a tent, or homeschooling kids may not
appeal to you. But if you have ever thought of living off the grid or simply
becoming more self-sufficient, this is how one American family successfully
did it . . . and found freedom along the way. 5½ x 8½, soft cover, photos,
illus., 164 pp.
Goats are social animals and need
company. The author ended up
with three females, and, after a
long discussion, got a billy (male)
goat. Billies are unlike other goats.
They smell so bad that if your
coat picked up the smell from
being near the billy, you’d burn it
on the spot.
The victim starts out on the right side, then is rolled onto her left side and half the
blanket. The rolled part of the blanket is pulled out from under her left side, and
she is then laid out flat on her back.
Order chickens from
a breeder after researching
which
breeds fit your
needs, rather than
using the “which is
the cutest chicken”
method while at
your local co-op.
Mind your own back when dragging the victim. If you can’t pull the weight comfortably,
get down to your knees, slowly pull the victim toward you while keeping
your back straight, then step back and do it again.
