Dear friends, 

Recently, a story on our hospital featuring one of our patients 

appeared in The New York Times (Sunday, March 29, 2009). Her 

words still resonate with me and guide my work as a member of the 

Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc., Board of Directors. 

“Your face welcomes me.” The 62-year-old woman from Somalia 

featured in the article used this beautiful expression as she beamed at 

her nurse during her clinic appointment. She went on to talk about 

how much she loved the hospital and our country, and her gratitude 

for the care she receives at Hennepin. 

Hennepin is welcoming to all of us. We rely on it as Minneapolis’ 

Level 1 Trauma Center, our hospital and clinic safety net, our standby 

disaster resource, and an essential education site for our region’s 

physicians and other health professionals. 

We trust Hennepin’s commitment to providing the best possible care 

for every patient we serve today, searching for new ways to improve 

care we provide tomorrow, educating health care providers for the 

future and ensuring access to health care for all. This enduring mission 

has long guided Hennepin and it continues unchanged. 

I am delighted to announce that I’m working with a great group 

of community and hospital leaders to form Hennepin Health 

Foundation, a new organization created to raise funds and engage 

our community in support of our work. I’m excited about this 

opportunity to enhance the mission of Hennepin County Medical 

Center, and I hope you will be, too. 

This newsletter is the first publication of Hennepin Health 

Foundation. In it, you will read about the community’s generous 

support for the Hennepin campus over the past year. Gifts and grants 

have been received by the hospital; the Service League, our affiliated 

support organization; and Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation, 

our partner in medical research. 

Please join me in welcoming Hennepin Health Foundation to our 

community. We look forward to working with you in guaranteeing 

a healthy and productive future for all of us who depend on

“Without Hennepin County Medical Center’s excellent care, there’s 

little chance I would be where I am right now,” says Tina Hickman. 

Her husband, Ben, agrees. “Hennepin saved my family,” he says. “And 

in doing so, they saved my own life.” 

On Aug. 1, 2007 — a day that is seared into the memory of many 

in our community — Tina, then 34 weeks pregnant with her first 

child, was traveling on the I–35W bridge when it collapsed into the 

Mississippi River. Sustaining a severe traumatic brain injury, Tina 

was taken to Hennepin, where doctors found themselves with an 

impossible decision to make, and no time to spare. 

Father, baby, and mommy

“as a patient, i was treated with the utmost 

“The first principle in trauma is to treat the mother first, because 

obviously the baby isn’t going to survive if the mother doesn’t,” says 

Hennepin trauma surgeon Jon Krook, MD, who treated Tina that 

night. But as the doctors were assessing Tina’s condition, it became 

clear that her baby needed immediate intervention. “Once a baby’s 

heartbeat starts to go down after a trauma like that, you don’t have a 

whole lot of time,” explains Jeannette Thomas, MD, the obstetrician 

who delivered Tina and Ben’s baby. And a mere 15 minutes after 

arriving at Hennepin, Jackson Hickman was born. Despite his early 

delivery, Jackson weighed more than six pounds — a fortuitous side 

effect of Tina’s gestational diabetes. 

At the same time, Tina’s husband, Ben, was on the other side of town. 

On that fateful night, he grew increasingly worried as more time 

elapsed without word from Tina. He started calling local hospitals, 

learning that a pregnant woman had been brought to Hennepin for 

care without any identification. Ben recalls arriving at Hennepin 

that night and finding a caring staff waiting for him. “Hennepin was 

prepared for a disaster,” he remarks. “And it was a disaster in every way. 

But they were ready.” The hospital chaplain quickly brought him to 

Tina — and introduced his new son. “We were so fortunate that not 

only was the emergency staff at Hennepin so well trained, but also 

the OB team,” reflects Tina. “We’re so grateful they made the right 

decision at such a stressful time.” 

But Jackson’s dramatic birth was only the beginning of the story for 

the Hickman family. Tina’s injuries were severe; she was in a coma 

for several days and didn’t regain full awareness for nearly a month. 

She was in the hospital for five-and-a-half weeks, and as her recovery 

progressed she underwent six to seven hours a day of intensive speech, 

physical and occupational therapy. After months of recovery at home, 

Tina was able to return to her job as a high school English teacher this 

past fall. “It was a huge sense of relief to go back to work,” she says.

Tina’s road to recovery continues today. “I am finding that after a good 

year and a half, I am still recovering,” she says. Key to recovery is her 

family, including her 18-year-old stepdaughter, Tessa, and 13-year-old 

stepson, Jarrod — and of course Jackson, now a thriving, active 20- 

month-old with a irrepressible smile and personality. “He was meant to 

be from the beginning,” says Ben. “A lot of medical successes along the 

way contributed to his being here. We are thrilled.” 

For the Hickmans, their experience crystallized the importance of 

Hennepin as a community resource. “Prior to this accident, HCMC 

wasn’t on my radar,” says Tina. “I now think that was a mistake. People 

need to understand the unbelievably high quality of care you can 

receive at Hennepin.” 

For Ben, who began working at Hennepin as a financial analyst in 

the fall of 2008, the accident meant seeing the direct mission of the 

hospital he now works for in action. “Coming back to Hennepin as 

an employee has felt full circle,” Ben says. “It lifted me.” Knowing 

that Hennepin serves as a safety net for the community adds another 

dimension to Ben’s commitment. “I walk in every day and I feel 

good,” he says. 

The accident has only strengthened Tina and Ben’s commitment 

to the community. “We were involved with our church and other 

organizations before the accident,” explains Ben, “but we are trying to 

give back even more now, trying to give back deeper.” 

“We’re so grateful for where we are right now,” says Tina. “All of the 

good fortune we’ve had with the outcome of this terrible accident, 

we want to give back.”

“this hospital has a compelling mission,” says Lynn 

Abrahamsen, CEO of Hennepin County Medical Center. “We treat 

anyone in need.” For over a century, Hennepin has served a crucial 

role as a safety net for the Twin Cities and the state of Minnesota, 

providing high-quality health care to the community. In addition to 

providing care to patients regardless of ability to pay, the hospital has 

served as both a teaching resource for training tomorrow’s health care 

professionals and a catalyst for the next frontier of medical research. 

Though the hospital’s name has changed over the years, its mission 

and guiding values have remained steadfast. 

Founded as Minneapolis City Hospital in 1887, the hospital has long 

been the go-to health care resource for area residents, many of whom 

would otherwise be unable to afford health care services. The hospital 

was renamed Minneapolis General in 1920, and when it came under 

county oversight in 1964, it became known as Hennepin County 

General Hospital. Finally, in 1974 the hospital was named Hennepin 

County Medical Center. Regardless of its name, however, the hospital’s 

role is clear. “Hennepin is a key part of our area’s infrastructure,” 

explains Abrahamsen. “We keep people healthy and the community vital.”

The hospital has a long tradition of attracting physicians dedicated 

to its safety-net purpose, says Don Jacobs, MD, chair and CEO of 

Hennepin Faculty Associates (HFA), the organization of physicians 

who practice at Hennepin. “HCMC has provided well over 100 years 

of care for those with limited or no access to health care,” he says. 

In addition to this galvanizing mission, Hennepin offers exceptional 

care and services, including programs such as the burn center and the 

hyperbaric chamber that would traditionally be unavailable due to 

cost. Hennepin is also a focus for education in the region. “Hennepin 

is a key training institution for future doctors and nurses,” explains 

Jacobs. As HFA celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, Jacobs reflects 

on the group’s unifying aim. “Our providers are here because this 

institution represents a long, rich history of its safety-net purpose.” 

Hennepin is also at the center of innovations in medical research. 

The Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation (MMRF), founded 

at the hospital in 1952, has been at the heart of major health care 

developments, including conducting the first heart transplant in the 

Midwest and the first kidney dialysis in Minnesota. “Research is one 

of the aspects that distinguishes Hennepin from other community 

hospitals,” says Gaylan Rockswold, MD, vice president of the MMRF 

Board. Indeed, MMRF is in the top 7 percent in the nation in terms of 

federal research dollars received — a major hospital accomplishment. 

In addition to exceptional patient care, education and research, Hennepin 

has a tradition of community involvement. The Service League, 

incorporated in 1959 and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has 

helped the hospital meet patient needs through financial support and 

volunteerism. Pam Flenniken, Service League president since 2006, 

explains the organization’s emphasis. “Our focus is on patients,” she says. 

“We especially meet the basic needs of our safety-net patients.” From 

clothing and transportation to teddy bears for every child needing 

surgery, the Service League has helped the hospital fulfill its role as a 

crucial community resource.

strategic priorities,” says Abrahamsen. Jacobs agrees, adding that the 

community is often unaware of all the hospital’s services. “Financial 

support is critical, but the Foundation is also an opportunity for the 

community to recognize what this institution does and what it means 

as a resource,” he says. “We want to challenge our community to step 

forward and support the initiatives that make this place so unique.” 

The Foundation will build upon the Service League’s mission 

of serving patient needs, explains Flenniken. “We feel strongly as 

a supporting institution of this hospital that the Foundation is a 

necessary evolution,” she says. Although Hennepin has undergone 

numerous changes over its long history, one factor has remained 

constant: the hospital’s role as a key health care resource and safety 

net for the community. The establishment of Hennepin Health 

Foundation begins a new chapter in the hospital’s rich legacy. 

Bunnie runman 

V o l u n t e e r 

For volunteer Bunnie Runman, supporting the hospital is a family 

tradition. Bunnie’s mother, Barb Timmons, was a longtime volunteer 

at Hennepin who was known and adored by all for her tireless work 

and positive attitude. “She was so dedicated to the hospital,” laughs 

Runman, “that at times I almost thought she lived there!” 

Timmons was also a patient at Hennepin, and during her end- 

of-life care, Runman got to know many of the volunteers and 

staff whose lives her mother had touched. “It started to feel like a 

family to me,” she recalls. 

After her mother’s passing in 2007, Runman decided she would 

carry on her mother’s legacy of volunteering at Hennepin. She 

spends her Tuesdays working with Employee Occupational Health 

and Wellness, and is famous for the exceptionally tasty baked goods 

she brings to share. “There’s such a sense of community here,” she 

says. “Volunteering at HCMC is fun, and I enjoy carrying on 

my mother’s tradition.”

for timothy crimmins, MD, vice president and director 

of health, safety and environment at General Mills, Hennepin is an 

invaluable community asset. “It’s a resource for training the doctors of 

tomorrow,” he explains. 

Crimmins, former deputy medical director at Hennepin, also 

completed the emergency medicine residency program at the hospital. 

“It’s a wonderful teaching institution, with great faculty and staff that 

are committed to patient care,” he recalls. “Every minute, the hospital 

is prepared to care for the sickest of the sick, the injured, within 

seconds of their arrival, without knowing their ability to pay.” 

In 2008, Crimmins made a gift to the Minneapolis Medical Research 

Foundation, Hennepin’s research wing. He sees his support as an 

investment in excellent care and in the next generation’s health care 

professionals. “Hennepin is known as a great clinical hospital to care 

for the sick and the injured,” he explains. “It also happens to be one of 

the best teaching institutions in the state.” 

Jeanne ettinger 

S u p p o r t e r 

“Hennepin county Medical center is a community,” 

says longtime Service League treasurer Jeanne Ettinger. “It’s like a 

small city unto itself.” Ettinger would know — Hennepin has been a 

part of her life for decades. Her husband, the late Milt Ettinger, MD, 

was instrumental in developing the hospital’s renowned neurology 

department, and also served as chair of Hennepin Faculty Associates. 

For Ettinger, the Service League is a crucial component of 

Hennepin’s excellence. “Our volunteers help the hospital 

tremendously,” she explains. From assisting low-income patients 

with clothing and transportation costs to serving in the gift shop, the 

Service League helps the hospital achieve its mission every day. 

The new Hennepin Health Foundation, explains Ettinger, will extend 

the Service League’s crucial work. “The Foundation is necessary for 

the future of the hospital,” she says. “A coordinated institution can 

help so much financially.” Indeed, Ettinger’s rationale for her longtime 

support of the hospital is clear: “It’s a wonderful community resource.”

Dorothy rosenberg’s decades-long commitment 

to Hennepin County Medical Center left an indelible impression on 

her children, Anne Rosenberg and Craig Rosenberg, MD. Having 

worked at Minneapolis General Hospital before having children, 

Dorothy soon returned as a faithful volunteer one day per week, often 

in the emergency room. “My mom always had an affinity for the 

underdog,” remembers Anne. “I think that’s why she chose Hennepin 

over other hospitals. The patients really needed the help.” 

After their parents passed away in the early 1990s, Anne and Craig 

searched for a way to honor their memory, deciding to establish a 

fund to support patient needs at Hennepin. “My mother was doing 

little things that made patients’ experiences that much better, whether 

it was making sure a family could stay together or making someone 

comfortable,” explains Anne. “That’s the spirit we wanted to reflect in 

establishing the Rosenberg Acts of Kindness Fund — sometimes it is 

the little things that count, too.” 

Anne notes that the fund focuses on meeting small needs and gives 

hospital staff the flexibility to act swiftly. “We don’t replace pieces of 

equipment, but we do help the hospital act fast when a small need is 

urgent,” explains Anne. One of the fund’s beneficiaries was a cancer 

patient who was close to death and wanted to get married before she 

died. The Rosenberg Fund paid for flowers for her hospital room 

ceremony. “It would have meant a lot to my mom to know she was 

impacting this patient’s life in a meaningful way,” says Anne. “That is 

the essence of what we were hoping the fund could provide.” 

“While many people don’t know who Bernie and Dorothy 

Rosenberg were, their spirit lives on through the fund,” reflects Anne. 

“Hopefully they are making people’s lives a little bit easier on a daily 

basis, just like they did when they were alive.”
