DQMx - Digital QAM Multiplexer

DQMx (Digital QAM Multiplexer) accepts and auto-detects up to 4 input streams in 8VSB (Digital off-air), QAM

(Digital CATV), and ASI (270 Mbps) formats, and delivers one output in QAM format in the 54-864 MHz range. Any

combination of input streams is allowed, i.e. (2xASI + 2x8VSB), or (4xASI), or (3x8VSB + 1xQAM), etc.

HD/SD MPEG-2 Processing

DQMx is available in two models:

Agile 54-864 MHz

[1] DQMx-XY - The unit is factory-equipped and shipped with X ASI input modules and Y 8VSB/QAM input modules. For

example DQMx-31 is shipped from factory with 3xASI + 1x8VSB/QAM input modules.

[2] DQMx - This is the modular version of DQMx-XY where the mainframe, the ASI input module, and the 8VSB/QAM input

module each can be purchased separately. This will allow the operator to configure the unit on-site per specific applications.

Input/Output Range & Limitation

Inputs

• Two (2) types of input modules are available: ASI and 8VSB/QAM

• The DQMx unit can be configured with a total of four (4) input modules

• Can mix & match both types of input modules on the same DQMx unit

• The ASI input module’s capacity is twelve (12) program streams, not to exceed 270 Mbps

For example: Total of 48 input program streams allowed for the fully-configured DQMx-40

• The 8VSB/QAM input module’s capacity is twelve (12) program streams, not to exceed 38.8

Mbps for QAM 256, or 19.4 Mbps for 8VSB

Multiplexed Output

QAM (Modes 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, and 1024)

• Agile Tuning (54-864 MHz, CATV NTSC channels 2 to 135)

• Output Level is +60 dBmV

• The multiplexed QAM output cannot contain more than twelve (12) program

streams

• The multiplexed QAM output bit rate cannot exceed: 38.8 Mbps for QAM 256, or

26.97 Mbps for QAM 64

Useful IF-THEN Statements

there are more than 12 program streams present on an input module,

DQMx will ignore the additional program streams (the streams will not be multiplexed into the output stream).

IF

AND IF

the DQMx is equipped with 4 input modules,

there are only the allowable 12 program streams per input module (total of 48 input streams),

since the allowable DQMx output is 12 streams, 36 program streams will not be multiplexed.

IF the output stream contains only the 12 allowable program streams,

BUT IF the output bit rate of those 12 program streams exceeds the allowable 38.8 Mbps (in QAM 256),

THEN all multiplexed streams, but particularly the HD streams, will appear “tiled” on the TV screen.

MPEG-2 Mapping

• Supports 2 modes for re-mapping of duplicate PIDs,

program numbers, and minor channel numbers:

Mode 1: Automatic - increments by 1

Mode 2: Fixed user offset with auto-correction

• Maintains the MPEG-2 mapping if the stream is

removed and same stream is added later (for example,

after a power cycle or facility power outage).

• Maintains mapping with new PAT/PMT/MGT versions

and same programming.

• In addition to PAT, PMT, and MGT tables, supports

the RRT, STT, and VCT tables.

The “PSIP OFF” Feature: Some TV sets cannot tune to a QAM signal which contains multiple programs with and without

PSIP information. The “PSIP OFF” feature of DQMx is designed to avoid this issue by removing the PSIP information from all the

streams present in the QAM output stream.

[1] The Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) is the protocol used in the ATSC digital broadcast television system for carrying information about each program stream. PSIP

defines virtual channels and content ratings, as well as program guides with titles and descriptions to be decoded and displayed by TV sets.

[2] TV set’s ATSC tuner will always tune to the channel number indicated by the PSIP, whether in its original form (4-1 in this example) or in its offset form (19-1).The RF output channel

number set by operator is overridden by the channel number present in the PSIP.

[3] TV set will display the “MPEG Program Number” embedded in the MPEG-2 transport stream.
