4D News
Great Improvements Coming for the Grab-Iron
Al Lowe
At the February Board of Directors meeting, the 4D Board voted to move the Grab-Iron to a new, better format. Rather than continue
our current method of digitally “printing” a new “issue” in a magazine format once a month, then storing it on the web, we want
to take advantage of the Internet’s benefits. Come September, your new Digital Grab-Iron will be 100% web-based, with all the advantages
of the net.
Instead of only twelve pages per month, we’ll have unlimited space. Instead of waiting weeks until an arbitrary end of the month
publishing date, updates will be published immediately. Instead of receiving email notification that the monthly issue is ready, you’ll be
notified whenever any areas of interest to you are updated. Instead of postage-stamp photographs, we’ll have high-resolution, largeformat
photographs that are easier to see. Instead of waiting for a large PDF download, everything will be instantly accessible with just
your browser.
Every article will include space for comments. All links and email addresses will be clickable. We’ll even be able to include videos.
We’ll have space to publish our Treasurer’s reports and the Secretary’s official minutes of Board meetings. We’ll have unlimited room
for articles and submissions. Instead of using 8.5"x11" paper format, everything will be formatted for the screen.
This also means we will discontinue publication of the paper Grab-Iron. Its circulation has fallen from several hundreds a years ago
to less than fifty copies the past several years. Yet we continue to pay thousands of dollars per year to print, stamp, address, and mail it.
Had we charged each subscriber his fair share of its cost, each subscription would be over $25 per year! We will keep our YahooGroup
for discussions, but I suspect much of its traffic will move to the Digital Grab-Iron.
We see this not as a step back, but as a vast improvement to our Division’s communications and we think you will, too. Next
month, we’ll have some samples to show you. More details will be in the June (and final) issue of the paper Grab-Iron.
Jack Hamilton Elected New NMRA Western District Director
Al Lowe
4D’s own Jack Hamilton won the recent election and will be our new NMRA Western District Director as of June 15 th . Unfortunately,
that means he has to step down as PNR President. Fortunately, he plans to continue as our PNR AP Chairperson. There will be
more about this in the next Switchlist, which will appear shortly. Jack writes to you:
I have thoroughly enjoyed my service as your President. I have learned a great deal about both the hobby and about how to serve each other for the betterment
of our Region and NMRA. I can only hope that I have contributed to the Region in some small manner. While I may no longer be in direct service to
the Region as an active member of the PNR BOD I will continue to serve all members of the Region through my service to NMRA.
Finally, I wish to thank each and every one of you for the assistance, appropriate guidance, and friendship you have shown me through your support and
service. No volunteer could ask for a better group of dedicated individuals to serve with.
For the good of the hobby — Jack
Brian Ellerby Passes
Fred Hamilton
Brian Ellerby, President and Founder of Evergreen Scale Models, died at University Medical Center on April 29, 2010, after a sevenmonth
battle with cancer. He was 67.
Ellerby, a native of the Pacific Northwest, had a life-long interest in model railroading. He started Evergreen Scale Models in his basement
in the late 1960s to support his hobby. His first products were pre-fabricated track switches. Soon after, he began to develop a line
of precision styrene plastic strips, sheets and shapes. These unique products were quickly discovered by scale modelers and architectural
model builders, resulting in rapid company growth. By the mid-1970s, Ellerby left the City of Seattle Engineering Department to pursue
Evergreen Scale Models as a full-time business.
A model builder of exceptional skill, Ellerby wrote articles for model railroad publications about his home layout, often describing
innovative construction and operating techniques. Photographs of his model railroad were published in numerous catalogs, promotional
materials, and web sites. In recognition of his contributions to the hobby, he received the National Model Railroad Association’s Distinguished
Service Award in 2009.
Evergreen Scale Models is located in Woodinville, Washington, and employs 12. Its products are used worldwide, with nearly onethird
of sales outside North America. Most of the machinery used to produce ESM products is unique and was designed and built by
Ellerby. His son, Donald, is committed to continue operation of the company in order to serve its customers.
Ellerby leaves his wife of 42 years, Mary, his son Donald (Mairead) Ellerby, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his father
and sister.
Ken Meeker Passes
Cheryl Meeker
Ken Meeker passed away Saturday, May 8. 4D members may remember him from the Boeing Swap Meet days of yore. Unfortunately,
he's not been around for several years because of spinal meningitis.
We had just gotten him up and outside so he could supervise the hanging of a sign by my brother and nephew. The rest of the family
(both sides) were on their way to the house for a Mother's and Father's Day BBQ. All arrived in time to say a final good-bye and participate
in a blessing by one of our local priests. Thank you for your continued support during the journey of the past few years.
Prototype Model
It appears the Roger Nulton has completed all requirements for MMR and is only awaiting submission of copies of supporting documentation
for Prototype so that the final SOQ can be submitted. Walt Huston, continues with six AP certificates looking for that elusive
seventh. Allen Frasch is closing fast with five certificates.. Keep on trucking guys.
This period saw a major breakthrough when a visit was arranged to one of our long time reluctant modelers. Besides getting to see a
really great layout, the AP crew was able to write paper for six merit awards and three AP certificates. It really is worth while to invite the
local crew over to take a look. Ask Jack Tingstad and Roger Nulton.
I look forward opportunities to visit with each of you for AP assessment or to your local clinics whenever I can make it. For the good
Clinic & Modular Group Reports
Reserve The Date: Thursday, May 20
Want to know more about operations? (The train kind, not the medical!)
Many layouts enjoy operating sessions. Now is your chance to learn more and understand
this facet of our hobby, so you can be invited to operate on someone
else’s pike or set up your own operations. Dave Liesse will present a comprehensive
clinic titled “Operations on the Apple Route,” how he operates on Amrail
(The Apple Route), a 20' x 30' N scale layout owned by Fred Henize. He’ll cover
the use of car cards and waybills, the track warrant system, plus how and why the
operating system was developed. Dave will explain how it was customized, how
things worked out, and will include photos.
Last month, over 40 of us were entertained by Dave Woodrell, who presented
an amazing clinic on creating scenery. Dave brought a 2' x 6' foam-based module
to demonstrate how he creates land forms with both foamboard and glue-gunned
paper spider webs covered with plaster cloth. He showed his ground cover technique,
beginning with latex paint, sprinkling on ground foam and decomposed
granite. He even showed how to put ground cover on a vertical cut using a spoon
of material and a photographer’s air blower. He covered bushes and shrubs and
how he makes trees from Super Trees armatures. He finished by showing photographs
of scenes from his own nationally-recognized Sn3 Rio Grande Southern
home layout. Absolutely fabulous! A special drawing was held to see who got to
take home his module and the lucky winner was Bob Rorabaugh, who fortunately
had brought his truck.
“Model Of The Month” included a stunning S scale café by George Chamber;
ties, supports and walkway for a curved trestle that Stu Rogers is building in N
scale; an amazing N scale module brought by Rob Jones; restoration progress
photos on work at the Snoqualmie Museum and a model of an NP 4-6-0 which
actually ran on the Snoqualmie line, brought by Russ Segner; and custom-built
display cases (without glass) showed off by Bob Rorabaugh ( which he plans to
build and sell to someone from his collection of different woods). The winner,
Jim Sabol, displayed his custom-painted, weathered and lettered D&RGW 2-8-2-2
in O scale. Great stuff.
Our May meeting will include the Stu Rogers video library, the Ferris Super
Mart, the Clay Hanson greeting and custom name tags, Steve Depolo’s Inside
Gateway’s door prizes, “Model Of The Month” and CJ Turner’s free coffee and
donuts (donations accepted). Come early to visit and make new friends while enjoying
an evening of camaraderie.
MMR Gene Swanson called the clinic to order and greeted everyone. We had
two newcomers which were welcomed by all.
Dale Kraus announced that he has increased the store discount for this month
and that items are going fast. If you need something, better get to the store quick
because there are no new items ordered. Gene thanked Dale and Diane for all
they had done for the hobby and wished them good luck in their new endeavor:
retirement.
Scott Groff is changing scales and has many items for sale; if you’re interested please contact him.
to achieve independence and self-sufficiency while
providing a stable, safe living environment. Thanks
to Rob & Mom!
“What’s New at the Hobby Shop” was presented by George Boucier including three annuals on logging, mining and coal, a number
of freight cars, and vehicles in several scales from various manufacturers.
The “Model of the Month” category featured scratchbuilt cabooses; a HOn30 (76mm gauge) double-ended critter; a water
tank built from a kit; a Master Creations building kit; a Walthers N scale kit; and an Ambroid wood dining car kit. The
winner was Gary Fredrikson with his O scale Backwoods Water Tank. The prototype was used on a logging line on Vancou-

ver Island, BC.
Our clinic of the month was named the
“Mystery Clinic.” As our presenter, I explained
that it was a last minute change in plans and we
didn’t know what it was going to be at our last
meeting. I presented a PowerPoint presentation
about railroading in 1:1 scale in a sandbox, actually
a narrow gauge railroad on an island in Northern
Germany called Sylt (where I grew up). The railroad
started in 1888 as a 2.6 mile line to haul passengers and freight from
the east side of the island to the town on the west side. The majority of
the passengers were tourists that came for health reasons and, as demand
grew, the line was expanded to the north. A shipping company named
HAPAG started a line from the southern end and soon both systems were
connected. The track ran through sand dunes at both ends of the line and
the ties were usually covered by sand making it look like the track was on
the sand. In 1927 a causeway was constructed to bring standard gauge rails
to the island eliminating the need for the line to the east, which was dismantled.
In the mid 50s, most tourists brought their own cars so passenger
traffic decreased and the railroad built its own unusual vehicle, a fifth
wheel tractor with passenger trailer. It ran until 1970, when the railroad
ceased operation.
Next month’s clinic will be at our usual location at the Pierce County
Library Admin. Bldg. at the corner of 112 th street and Waller Rd, May 13 th
at 7:30 PM. Matt McGinnis and Jim Sabol will present “Yard Throat Designs.”
See you there!
For the first item of business, I need to post a correction to last month’s report. I erroneously reported that Phil & Sue Gonzales,
John White and Gordon Jones were awarded honorable mention certificates for their part in the 288 Challenge, a 2’ x 4’ diorama building
contest. The correct list of awardees for honorable mention certificates is Rich Blake, John White and Susan Gonzales. Congratulations to
these three. Good job!
On to current business. There were 23 people in attendance at the April 14 th meeting. Al Frasch and Jack Tingstad collaborated on a
very comprehensive discussion of the factors that should be weighed in designing a layout to be used for group operations. They offered
an eight page single-spaced outline of thought-provoking points to consider, ranging from aisle width to people skills. They talked about
layout size, layout type, group dynamics, paperwork systems, lighting, controls, locomotives, rolling stock, scenery, time requirements, and
reference materials. They alternated, taking turns leading the discussion, and kept up interest with a series of computerized slides. their
program was well received. As a supplement, they provided, by e-mail attachment, the responses to Scott Buckley’s recent questionnaire
on operations, an article by Al Frasch on “Considerations for an Operations Layout” for the Dispatcher’s Office publication, and an article
written by Rich Thom called “Operating Methods.” Rich was scheduled to be a part of the presentation team, but had to be away. On
Wednesday, May 12 th , we look forward to John Mann leading a discussion on “DCC - Beyond Decoders.”
The meeting was concluded with a drawing for several door prizes generously donated by Performance R/C Hobbies located on Fairhaven
Avenue in Burlington.
Candidates’ Statements
Candidate Statement for Dennis Hill
I have served as your Fourth Division Superintendent for the past two years. It has been an honor for
me, but also trying at times dealing with the various issues that have arisen! I feel that there are still unresolved
issues within the Division and I ask for your support again. If I am running unopposed for this office,
I ask for your Vote of Confidence for one more two-year term as your Superintendent.
If anyone else would like to help or make suggestions, please let me know your thoughts or ideas to
make the Division better.
Candidate Statement for JJ Johnston
Perhaps you have attended one of the meetings of the Eastside Get Together in Bellevue where I have
been the volunteer chair for several years. Or perhaps you have read my reporting on our meetings in the
monthly Grab Iron. Perhaps you have visited an open house at my home HO scale layout of the Puget
Sound Iron Goat Railway, a mythical subsidiary of the Great Northern in 1939, or perhaps you have seen
photos of the layout in the Grab Iron. Perhaps you might remember my layout story by Paul Scoles in the
Jan/Feb 2003 Narrow Gauge Gazette. Perhaps you are aware of the updated Gus Swanberg 4th Division
logo and patch for which I served as chair of the new design committee. Perhaps you have attended one of
the scenery clinics I have presented, and perhaps you have met me at one of the local conventions. There is
also a big-time possibility you don’t know who I am at all. I came to the hobby in my later years and have
only been an NMRA member since 1995. I truly enjoy all aspects of our hobby; and as a REALTOR, I have been privileged
to assist several of you in finding the right layout space with a home attached. I have served one term on the Board of Directors
and wish to continue my service. Perhaps you will honor me by supporting my current nomination. I thank you for your
consideration. JJ Johnston
caboose, all in N scale by Rob Jones; a slick N scale Texaco oil depot diorama, detailed with tank car and siding, multiple
storage tanks, vehicles, barrels and people by Stu Rogers; and something a bit bigger in HO scale, an attractive open gon rectangular
material load by Roger Ferris.
The past couple of years, Seattle-North Clinic attendees have been encouraged to save their aluminum foil candy wrappers.
The April clinic was when they brought in those collections, for another “Hands-On” modelling project. We ground up
a blend of mixed aluminum foil colors in a blender, running it longer for the smaller scales. The shredded pieces were
pressed and hammered into a wooden forming mold to create recycled aluminum bales in the desired scale. The bales then
become loads for a truck or gon, or even recycled scrap yard inventory.
Free is good and this is the ultimate in recycling and being modern and green. By saving this from a landfill, by reusing it,
and by modelling the prototype in total accuracy by actually modelling recycling by recycling. Sponsored by the Department
of Redundancy Department.
Several participants decided to experiment with other options for the mold process. Although they were limited to what
could be found on-site to abuse in their zeal, they worked very enthusiastically in attempting to create new shapes and types
of bales. They even came up with some round bales, perhaps an option for making hay-bales? Young Sam and dad John
really dedicated themselves to some mass production for their home project, even borrowing the blender for continued
homework during the next month. This was a fun clinic to watch others get excited about the various possibilities.
Have you ever wondered how to achieve the excellent operating rolling stock characteristics that you see on high quality
layouts? Our May 6 th clinic will feature a special rolling stock kit construction and operational tune-up clinic by Mart Master
and potential MMR candidate Roger Ferris, EdD. This will be another “hands-on” session. You will learn to turn a “shake
the box” kit into finely-tuned rolling stock that you will be proud to take to any “Show & Tell” or layout operating session.
Your rolling stock will exceed most layout standards. Bring your own kit, in your own scale, your own tools and supplies. If
you forget (or just need yet another new kit!) Roger will have some HO kits for sale from the MART and our Tool Kits will
be available for those with the need to borrow.
The May 6 th clinic will be your first opportunity to sign up for the June Seattle-North Clinic Annual Railroad Tour. This is
always a limited seating tour and, when sold out, it is closed. Seattle-North Clinic attendees have the first option to sign up,
followed by Eastside attendees, the remainder of 4D, and then general NMRA membership. Since we always sell out well
before that, get your reservations quick! The price will be announced at the clinic. After the May clinic, questions will be answered
and reservations made through Roger Ferris, railfun@verizon.net.
As always, the Seattle-North Clinic is held the first Thursday of each month, from September thru June. Roger brings the
MART, Stu the Video Library, Chris the treats, Jim the door prizes, there is “Show & Tell,” and you are there to have fun.
We begin gathering around 7 PM, in the lower level of the Ronald United Methodist Church, in Shoreline, WA, located just
north of 175 th on Aurora Ave N (Hwy 99) on the west side between the Cadillac dealer and Deseret Industries. Be there or
updates us on members’ layouts and other projects in which they are involved.
The clinic was a special contest in celebration of the day, April Fool’s Day. Three entries were shown and described. I
brought in a Micro-Trains wood load converted to a “Craftsman Kit for a Wood Sided Box Car” complete with truss rods,
trucks and couplers already attached to the frame. All the modeler would have to do is cut and attach the “wood” to the
frame in an appropriate manner to form the car. A porta-potty was supplied for the craftsman to use as needed as it would
take a very long time to build this kit due to its complexity. Tom Todd brought in an Atlas flat car with a ¾” nut attached in
the center of the car. He had a trainman with a wrench in his hand who was saying “I think I need a bigger wrench.” Tom
explained that the nut was being transported to a dam site where a new style dam was under construction using steel plate
that was to be bolted together and therefore, nuts were also required. Lastly, Hal Smith brought in a depressed center flat car
made from a Bachmann passenger car that had the Addams Family house attached with the whole thing being towed by
“The Hand.” Everyone who failed to bring in a model for the contest was compelled to be a part of the judging team. Hal
won the contest and I came in second. It was a lot of fun and a lot of imagination went into the entries. I doubt we will meet
on April Fool’s Day again soon so everyone has plenty of time to put something together for the next special contest.
We had another first timer this month: Dave Liesse joined us for the first time. I wonder if he will ever come back.
Our May meeting is on May 6 th and should prove to be a good one. We were going to have an interesting clinic on signaling
presented by Ed Hill, but that has been changed and we will have an interesting clinic by Susan Evans on building “Foam
Scenery.” Ed will present his clinic on June 3 rd . Our July clinic will still be “Painting Brass” by Tyler Whitcomb and a guest
painter whose identity remains a secret. In August we will have Susan’s “Lighting Structures” clinic originally scheduled for
June 3 rd . I think those are all the changes from our published schedule.
Come have fun with us. The schedule of our clinics for 2010 is available at the meetings, Online Trains, Pacific Railway
Hobbies (for a limited time) and Tacoma Trains. The Tacoma N Scalers meet the first Thursday of the month at the Fircrest
Recreation Center, 555 Contra Costa, Fircrest, WA.
