YMCA Centennial
Commemorative Artwork
This is an original water colour by Edmonton artist Eveline Garneau.
Commemorating the incorporation of the Young Men’s Christian
Association of Edmonton by an Act of Legislature on March 15, 1907, the
artwork features YMCA activities and facilities over the past 100 years.
The red triangle illustrates the YMCA’s mission: the development of
people in spirit, mind and body.
The YMCA’s early activities depicted inside the red triangle include the
original YMCA building which opened in February 1908, the first indoor
swimming pool in Edmonton, weight lifting and basketball, YMCA
programs including Conversational French and the 26 dormitories
offering a safe clean place to sleep.
The YMCA programs depicted outside the triangle include education and
employment support, housing, childcare, leadership development,
preschool, child and youth, fitness and wellness, aquatics and camping.
Special thanks to Eveline Garneau for donating the artwork. She was on
staff with the YMCA of Edmonton and worked in many areas including
Camp Keewaydhin (Seba Beach) for four years and Camp Metawewak
(Solicitor General Staff College) for three years. Eveline appears here
paddling the canoe.
CEO and Board Chair’s Message
2007
2007 was a wonderful year of
celebration and milestones for the
YMCA of Edmonton.
This was our Centennial year. We
organized many events throughout
the year in all our centres. On April
14th the Centennial Gala, “Spirit,
Mind, Body…and Running Shoes”
was held. Over 900 YMCA friends,
volunteers and staff celebrated at the
Shaw Conference Centre. One of
the lasting impressions in the
program was Leslie Nielsen’s
recollections of his early days in our
YMCA. A book, the “YMCA of
Edmonton, The First 100 Years” by
Colin Hatcher, summarized our
YMCA’s history and was distributed
across our Association. A number of
YMCA members and volunteers were
interviewed in a Centennial DVD
produced by Board volunteer Lisa
Miller. The Centennial DVD was
dedicated to the memory of “Edwin
S. Cook, Passionate YMCA
Volunteer, 1936-2007.” Ed’s
leadership positively influenced the
YMCA movement on the local,
regional, national and international
forums. He will be missed.
On March 15th we celebrated the
100th anniversary of the
incorporation of the Young Men’s
Christian Association of Edmonton
by an Act of Provincial Legislature.
The celebration was held on the
construction site of the new
downtown Don Wheaton Family
YMCA. Cecil Paull, a 69 year YMCA
member and recently certified
Fitness Instructor, led a “Celebrity
Spin Class”!
On November 22nd we realized a
long standing dream. After
discussions for the past two decades,
we finally opened the new Don
Wheaton Family YMCA in the heart
of our city. Alberta’s hot economy
made the construction challenging
but work of dedicated staff, a
committed contractor, Clark
Builders, and creative consultants –
led by Barr Ryder Architects, made
this new centre a reality.
Resulting from work with a group of
volunteers in Grande Prairie, Alberta
two new licensed child care centres
were opened. The centres are fully
operational and providing programs
for over 120 children and their
families.
We are thankful for the support of
so many in our community: the
73,000 who participated in a variety
of programs, our 1,400 donors, our
dedicated volunteer and staff teams
and our many community partners.
The celebration of anniversaries
leads to a sense of a future full of
promise. The YMCA of Edmonton
begins its second century of service
to the community and we feel the
same energy of the first YMCA
founders as we launch the next
100 years. In January, to prepare us
for the next century, the Board
launched a new strategic planning
process. It will be completed in 2008.
We are living in very exciting times.
We have been blessed with many
strengths and opportunities. We
believe it is our responsibility to
steward and optimize these for
the benefit of our community,
our province, our country and
our world.
Families First Edmonton
Reaches Out to 1,150 Families
Families First Edmonton is a research project to
determine whether delivering health, family support
and recreation services in a coordinated way can lead
to better outcomes for low-income families.
The project randomly places families in one of four
different service delivery programs. One program gives
families access to a recreation coordinator who places
the children into recreation activities free of charge.
Another group receives a family support worker who
assists them with solving problems and linking them to
health, social services and child care. The third group
receives a combination of the previously mentioned
services. A final group serves as the control group and
continues to access services with no change.
The recruitment of families to the research project is
completed! We have close to 300 families in each of four
program groups for a total of 1150 families in the entire
research project. Our staffing complement at the YMCA
Enterprise Centre has doubled in size due to our involvement
in the project.
Our partnerships with Multi-Cultural Health Brokers
Co-operative, KARA Family Resource Centre, and Bent
Arrow Traditional Healing Society have strengthened
through this project.
The YMCA is one of the biggest links to recreational
services for the families participating in the project.
Many children and families are accessing the YMCA and
benefiting from a range of services from swim lessons to
day camp!
YMCA Child Care History
1972
Day Care first came to Edmonton with Baby
Tenders Day Nursery under the ownership
and supervision of Rheta Lawrence moved
into the West YMCA later known as the
Westmount ‘Y’ at 12840–109 Avenue.
1979
YMCA offered Day Care for the first time
under its own support.
The YMCA has played a leading role in
providing quality child care since 1979
when the Westglen Day Care opened.
By 1991 the “Y” was operating five Child
Care Centres.
1981
YMCA Day Care and the first Out-of-School
Care program began at Westglen School.
1991
The “Y” operated five Child Care Centres.
2005
YMCA of Edmonton operated 18 Child Care
programs out of 17 different sites.
Integrated care facility for veterans and
YMCA of Edmonton
Opens Child Care in
Grande Prairie
In 2006 a group of community citizens from Grande
Prairie approached the YMCA Management Resource
Centre (MRC) of the Prairies office in Edmonton with
interest in having YMCA programs, and eventually a
YMCA Family Centre, in their community. During the
summer of 2006, the group commissioned a community
needs assessment. The needs assessment identified that
Day Care and Out-of-School Care, along with services for
youth and families were critical needs in the community.
In September 2007, through partnerships with Peace
Country Health and the Grande Prairie Catholic School
Board, the YMCA of Edmonton began operations at two
centres in Grande Prairie. The Patterson YMCA Child
Care Centre is licensed for 68 children ages from birth to
6 years and 10 children between the ages of 6-12 years.
The Kateri Mission YMCA is licensed for 50 children
between the ages of 5-12 years. It serves children from
Kateri Mission School as well as the new public school,
Derrick Taylor.
The MRC office continues to work with the Grande
Prairie and District YMCA Advisory Board to meet more
needs in their community.
2007 Child Care
Services
Developing each child’s interactive
and emotional skills is an important
goal for staff. Self esteem and respect
for others are key principles dealt with
throughout the day in a variety of ways.
Strong Partnerships
30 Years of Relationship…
YMCA of Edmonton and YMCA of Bogota, Colombia
In 1978, the YMCA of Edmonton established a relationship with the YMCA of
Bogota, Colombia. The initial visitation included participants from YMCA Canada,
Alberta YMCAs Calgary and Edmonton and CIDA (Canadian International
Development Agency).
The following year The Bogota YMCA made a ten day visit to the Alberta YMCAs
to see their program operation. The trip concluded with a relationship agreement
between the Alberta YMCAs and the Bogota YMCA in Colombia.
Initially, the relationship focused on financial support for the Gamines – Children
of the Street Program. This program has helped homeless children in Bogota find
suitable alternatives to street life. In the following years, visitations by staff and
volunteers were encouraged to better understand cultures and economics of both
countries.
New programs like “Family Ties”, to help Bogota kids stay at home and go to school
occurred in the late 1990s. This program was shared later with the Edmonton
YMCA Enterprise Centre professional staff through a six month training course.
A visitation in 2003 by an Alberta delegation recognized the 25-year partnership
between Edmonton and Bogota. This partnership has been recognized as a leading
international program by YMCA Canada. In recent years training in the areas of
Strategic Planning, Annual Campaigns and Volunteer Management were delivered
in Bogota by Edmonton and Calgary staff and volunteers.
The Edmonton YMCA Foundation –
Helping Secure the Future of our YMCA
Strong Future
As part of an initiative to ensure the continued growth
and operation of the YMCA of Edmonton, the Association
formed the “The Edmonton YMCA Foundation” on
January 4, 1991. The Foundation’s primary purpose is
to develop and monitor an Endowment Fund which is
dedicated exclusively to support YMCA of Edmonton
programs and services. The Foundation Board’s first
job was to establish policies and procedures for the
solicitation of gifts and for the management of funds.
All endowment gifts to the Foundation will remain in the
fund in perpetuity. Interest will be dispersed to YMCA of
Edmonton programs and services at the Foundation
Board’s discretion.
On October 29, 1998, 65 Charter Members of the YMCA
Heritage Club met for dinner at the Mayfair Golf &
Country Club to be thanked by the YMCA for including
the YMCA Foundation in their future plans.
YMCA Heritage Club members have planned a future gift
for the YMCA through a will, life insurance, charitable
trust or gifts of cash, securities or property. The Heritage
Club has welcomed new members annually since 1998
and as of December 2007 the Heritage Club included
185 YMCA supporters and friends.
2007 YMCA of Edmonton Annual Report
Strong Kids
Annual Campaigns
The YMCA has always had a policy that no one is
turned away because of inability to pay. YMCA
members, staff, volunteers and friends support the
YMCA with annual gifts to ensure that everyone in our
community can benefit from YMCA programs and
services. As the YMCA opened in 1908, a person could
purchase a Sustaining Membership.
In the 1970s the Sustaining Membership
became known as the Annual Giving
Campaign. In 2002, the Annual Giving
Campaign was renamed The Strong
Kids Campaign. The Strong Kids
Campaign supports the YMCA
Opportunity Fund which encourages
anyone who cannot afford the full
fee to benefit from involvement
at the YMCA.
In 2007, the Strong Kids Campaign
raised $477,000 with the help of more
than 1,300 donors. These gifts helped
more than 9,000 individuals with
membership and program participation.
Our comprehensive relationship development program
incorporates a variety of activities including ongoing
community engagement, communication with our
diverse 73,000 stakeholders, our annual Strong Kids
campaign and our planned giving program. The cost
of our 2007 relationship development program was
$487,000. The cost of our 2007 Strong Kids campaign
was $44,600 or 9.3% of the total raised.
1921
The use of the hut
located on the 3rd and 4th floors. Rooms
were available to Association members for
$10 to $12 per month.
1912 The “Y” responded to the need
requiring housing by purchasing and setting
up ten extra beds in a meeting room to
handle the overflow in the dormitory.
have a presence in
the community
outside of its
1985
The YMCA invested
in a new facility to
house an innovative
series of programs
and named it the
YMCA Enterprise
the Enterprise
Centre, collaborated
on a five year
research project
called Families First
Edmonton. This
project arose out of
a shared desire to
find the best way to
help families with
low incomes access
existing programs
and services.
& Transitional Housing
However, we also serve women, families,
tourists - anyone who is looking for safe,
affordable accommodation.
