Biography of Elaine and Mike Adler, Founders
ADLER APHASIA CENTER
Mike and Elaine Adler, two successful entrepreneurs and community activists,
founded the Adler Aphasia Center in 2003 located in Maywood, NJ. Ten years
earlier, Mike had suffered a stroke after bypass surgery. The stroke left Mike with
aphasia. Elaine’s life changed, as well. She felt frustrated, confused and helpless
as she tried to put their changed lives back together. Although there were many
hospital-based speech pathology services in the area that could help Mike with
his aphasia, the Adlers found no program that could help him adjust to living
with aphasia. The Adlers researched speech pathology clinics around the world
and uncovered several unique programs where people touched by aphasia
were learning new ways to communicate. Today, the Adler Aphasia Center
offers two locations and welcomes people with aphasia and their caregivers
and offers them quality programs and services that help people re-engage in
their communities and get on with their lives.

Mike & Elaine Before Aphasia
Two wonderful happenings occurred in 1949, Mike & Elaine were married and
they co-founded the Myron Corp. a mail order firm specializing in marketing
products exclusively to other businesses. Today, it is one of the largest businesses
in Bergen County. In 1982, Elaine launched her own catalog, “Comfortably
Yours.”
Elaine is active in community and volunteer services and is a member of
the following Boards: Adler Aphasia Center, Arnold P. Gold Foundation
for Humanism in Medicine, the Center for Inter-Religious Understanding,
Community Resource Council, the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center,
the Toy Lending Library of America, Ramapo College Board of Governors and
Gilda’s Club.
Both Mike and Elaine received honorary doctorate degrees from Ramapo
College during commencement ceremonies on May 27, 1999. They have been
honored by the ADL, UJA, Boys Town of Jerusalem, Ramapo College, Bergen
Community College, Hadassah (Elaine) and the National Aphasia Association.
Mike and Elaine have served on boards of the UJA and Mike sat on the Executive
Board of Hackensack Hospital.

RETIRED vice-president and chairman, INTEL CHINA
Sean Maloney learned resilience early in life, growing up in gritty South East
London, the last of six kids, and getting kicked out of school at age 15. It was an
unlikely launch for a man who was to become head of Intel’s worldwide sales
organization, the first Chairman of Intel China, and a well-known visionary for
the computing industry.

That resilience is what Sean drew on in February, 2010 when he suffered a
stroke which left him with aphasia and right-sided paralysis. Doctors didn’t
know whether he would ever walk or talk again. The doctors didn’t know Sean
Maloney. Within two years of having his stroke, he took the lead of Intel China,
but only after being given the gigantic challenge of learning Mandarin. He now
has more than 1 million Web followers, one of the most popular micro-blogging
sites in China. Sean Maloney embodies the scientific evidence of neuroplasticity
of the brain: There are no limits and no plateaus.
Sean retired from Intel in January, 2013. He will spend more time with his wife
Margaret and their six children and pursue personal interests, including rowing
and the study of Chinese languages.

Aphasia is a language disorder that impairs the expression and understanding of spoken language,
reading and writing. It occurs most often from stroke or brain injury. This frustrating condition affects a
person’s ability to communicate, but does not affect his or her intellect.

In looking back over the past ten years of the development
of the Adler Aphasia Center, I am proud to have been a part
of the growth and development of this wonderful program
from the start. All of us know that this program could not have developed without the
generous support of Mike and Elaine Adler; the wonderful professional staff, starting with:
1. our outstanding Executive Director, Karen Tucker, and those whom she has brought
together;
2. those on the Board of Directors who have given generously of their time, effort and
resources; as well as,
3. those members of our community who have been there in support of this program on
an ongoing basis.
But what we are most proud of are those participants who stepped forwarded to be
recognized as someone with aphasia who was going to work with us to overcome their
affliction, help us to learn how to better treat others with aphasia which has enabled all of
us to make this program more meaningful than just a day care program.
Under Mike’s leadership there was always a direction which the program took and that was
to provide quality services which would enable our participants to help themselves and at
the same time help the medical and the broad general community better understand the
meaning of aphasia and to understand that their lives could be improved with the help of:

1. a wonderful, talented, professional staff; both those who work at our sites in Maywood,
West Orange and in Israel
2. those are are in the research arm of the program working just as hard to find new,
creative ways for those with aphasia to better deal with it; and with,
3. the help of the hundreds of volunteers who make themselves available everyday with a
smile and a helping hand. This includes those caregivers who both teach us and learn
from us also.
A major effort is now taking place to develop new programs which will serve people with
aphasia who are not now getting services. As a result of a major financial gift from the
Adlers’, we are encouraging new communities to start a program in their community, with
AAC’s help for the first three years and then for them to find the resources to continue the
program so that we can continue to grow new programs.
I hope that you will be a participant in this effort as it will require matching funds to make
this effort successful.
On a personal note, I thank Mike for having the confidence in me to help him by stepping
into his shoes and helping to move this effort forward. They have been very dear friends
for many years.

Bernie Koster

Bernie Koster was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. After attending Brooklyn
College and receiving a B.S. Degree in Accounting, Bernie attended New York
Law School and consequently began his career as an Attorney and Real Estate
Consultant. Having a passion to help others less fortunate than himself has led
Bernie to become involved in various political, community, social and charitable
organizations. In addition to serving on the board of the Adler Aphasia Center, he
is currently on the boards of such organizations as the UJA Federation, The Jewish
Home at Rockleigh, Englewood Hospital, bergenPAC, Jewish Home Foundation,
The Anti-Defamation League, Israel Bonds, Jewish Family Service of Bergen
County, and Youth Consultation Service (YCS). Additionally, Bernie is a member
of the Board of Trustees at Temple Emanuel in Closter and a former president of
the Solomon Schechter Day School and a former member of Gilda’s Club and the
JCC on the Palisades and New Jersey Israel Trade Commission. For the past twelve
years, Bernie has served as the chairman of 49 Journals for 9 different charities,
raising in excess of 19 million dollars. Bernie is the recipient of the prestigious
Torch of Liberty Award from the Anti-Defamation League as well as the Golden
Menorah Award from the State of Israel Bonds. He was the honoree for the Adler
Aphasia Center in 2008, and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in May
of 2009. Bernie resides in Tenafly, New Jersey with his wife Norma Wellington.
They have five children and ten grandchildren.
A message from the tribute book chair
It is my privilege to serve as the chairperson for the eighth annual benefit gala
journal. This year is special, as we are celebrating our tenth year with a tribute
book dedicated to Mike & Elaine for their tireless efforts, generosity and vision
that has made this Center a place of hope for the aphasia community.
I congratulate Mike, Elaine, and Sean Maloney for the honors they so well deserve.
I extend my deepest thanks to the entire Tribute Book Committee and Karen
Tucker and her staff for all their hard work and dedication.

Welcome to our 8th annual gala, Stars of Innovation!
We are so glad you could join us. Stars of Innovation is our special
tribute to our founders - Mike & Elaine Adler. Sean Maloney, a star
and innovator in his own right is also cause for celebration as we present him with the 2013
Adler Aphasia Center Advocacy Award. Like Mike Adler, a stroke and aphasia were not going to
stop Sean from continuing on a successful path. No doubt both had to face daunting challenges
but true to form, conquered their challenges and went on to become outstanding leaders and
role models in their chosen paths. Elaine Adler has been a tireless supporter, advocate, and
visionary- along with Mike – as they dreamed of what could be and how they could help the
thousands of people with aphasia and their families locally, nationally and internationally.
We are also celebrating our 10 year anniversary. It does not seem so long ago when I was
introduced to the Adlers and their vision of a center for people with aphasia and their families.
What would this non-traditional center look like? Their vision – to provide innovative programs
and services to people with aphasia and their families, advocate and raise awareness about
this little known but all too prevalent disorder, educate healthcare professionals and conduct
evidence-based research to demonstrate the effectiveness of our therapeutic model and
programs.

Our annual gala is a major effort and our major fundraiser. In order to guarantee that it provides
fun and funds, it takes many months of planning and coordination by volunteer leadership
and staff. Congratulations and my sincere thanks to this evening’s Gala Committee Co-Chairs,
Barbara Drench and the OyOy sisters as they are affectionately known; Karen Fierstein, Lee
Langbaum, Angelica Berrie, Debbie Aronson, Roz Ginsberg, Bjorg Ollendorff, Liesa Rosner,
and their committee. Barbara Tillman and Sharon Rubin, our Silent Auction Co-Chairs, spent
endless hours gathering all the wonderful items on display. Finally, we are truly indebted to
Bernie Koster, 2013 Ad Journal Chair, and his committee for their efforts on our behalf. Special
congratulations and sincere appreciation needs to be highlighted for Bernie’s efforts as the
journal chair since our first gala in 2006 raising over 2.5 million through sponsorships and ads
that directly benefit people with aphasia and their families.
From day one, the Adlers with their passion, generosity, care and kindness for the human
condition have inspired the Board, staff, volunteers, people with aphasia and their families to
thrive and flourish in this healing and nurturing environment. We are all at the top of our game
because of their vision- our Stars of Innovation. I am honored and grateful to have been part
of this ten year journey.
And, of course, thanks to all of you for helping us to achieve this milestone. We could not have

Dear Friends,
Tonight as we gather to celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are proud and humbled
to see so many of our dear friends and family, many of whom have generously
supported us from the beginning. Ten years have passed quickly. In those years,
we have grown to three centers, Maywood, West Orange and Jerusalem, all called
“havens” by our members. Future growth includes an aphasia support group in
Somerset County, where we will partner with the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC
in Bridgewater.
Our members with aphasia and our caregivers have found a “home.” Our Centers
have brought back a spark to those who thought their lives were over. They arrive
with fear, frustration and melancholy, but soon find new friends, new interests
and a new and different world in which to thrive. They are mingling and smiling
again. We have a third set of extraordinary people at our Centers – our volunteers
– who give their hearts and souls to those who need our help. They thrive as well
as they play a vital role in the success of the Adler Aphasia Center and as they see
our members and their families return to a new and better quality of life.
We are so pleased with how far we have come and we are looking to you, our
community, as we prepare for the future of Adler Aphasia Center. In preparing
for this future, we are announcing the creation of the Adler Aphasia Center New
Initiatives Fund. For every $1000 or more donated to this fund, we will personally
match these donations up to $1,000,000. This pledge is intended as a call to
action to rise to the challenge of a new partnership with all of you. This fund
will enable us to develop new programs, new opportunities for growth of future
centers like ours, raise more awareness about this communication disorder, and
ensure a better quality of life for those with aphasia and their families.

What is aphasia?
Aphasia is an acquired language disorder caused by brain damage most
often from stroke, head injury or brain tumor. People with aphasia may
have difficulty with speech, understanding of verbal and written words,
reading, and writing. The most prevalent characteristic of aphasia is
difficulty with word retrieval or that “tip of the tongue” feeling. Aphasia
does not affect a person’s intellect, memory, judgment, or problem solving
skills. Almost 2,000,000 Americans have aphasia, more than those with
muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, or cerebral palsy. And yet aphasia
is not well known. Aphasia can affect anyone, at any age.

Aphasia is an isolating diagnosis. Not only does it rob one of the ability
to communicate, the very nature of aphasia is that it cuts off people
from their family, friends and everyday life. Our mission is to be a vital
resource to anyone whose life or profession is touched by aphasia.
As one of only a few aphasia-friendly communities in the world, we:
• Provide a therapeutic environment of innovative programs that offer
people ways to live successfully with aphasia;
• Create opportunities for social connection;
• Train health care professionals to improve service delivery to people
with aphasia;
• Conduct influential research and partner with aphasia researchers
worldwide;
• Strive to make aphasia universally understood.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Adler Aphasia Center offers people with aphasia the skills and strategies
they need to communicate through activities including:
• Direct services for people with aphasia and their caregivers;
• Education and training to health care professionals and the community
about aphasia;
• Applied research demonstrating the effectiveness of our model;
• Research based individual treatment to those with aphasia.
How do we help our members?
Through life skills activities, the arts, literature, technology, cooking,
nature, and fitness, our programs help our members:
• Stimulate communication skills
• Exercise cognitive skills
• Build self-esteem
• Rebuild social connections
How do we help caregivers and family?
The caregiver and family support group is facilitated by our life coach
and focuses on mutual support and encouragement while learning to
cope with the challenges of aphasia.

Research
Now in its sixth year, the Center’s on-site research program, under the
guidance of Dr. Audrey Holland, Ph.D., CCC- SLP, our Director of Research,
helps ensure that our services and programs are relevant and effective in
providing the opportunity for members with aphasia to rediscover their
skills. Using effective techniques, the latest technology and in house
research, our members’ communication skills have improved, allowing
them to rediscover their use of language. Our research has demonstrated
statistically significant improvements in functional language skills and in
perceived quality of life among Center members, after participating in
our programs for just one year.
Advocacy, Education and Training for healthcare professionals and the
community
We are a resource for people with aphasia, their caregivers, healthcare
professionals and the community. We educate healthcare providers
about the challenges of aphasia and provide them with specific strategies
to communicate with their patients.
Who are our advocates and partners?

Members with aphasia are our most committed and effective advocates
and are given every opportunity to work with their communities to raise
awareness of aphasia on behalf of the Center. They are able to offer a
unique perspective about aphasia to our visiting healthcare professionals
and the community by being an integral part of our Advocacy, Education
and Training program. We also partner with medical schools, universities
and health systems to provide a training ground for healthcare students
in speech-language pathology, medicine, nursing, social work and other
professions. Our community outreach provides education programs for
business professionals, religious groups and other organizations.

There is such an incredible vibe, energy and sprit at the Aphasia center.
It’s a busy place every room is filled with activities from cooking classes
to jewelry making. The magic is how the group interacts with one
another. The problem was no such place existed till ten years ago.
I am so proud of my parents in the creation of the Adler Aphasia Center.
They assembled the most amazing team of caregivers and supporters

The Center has given the Members and their Caregivers the ability to be more independent,
and to regain some of the independency they have lost due to the stroke and Aphasia.

My husband joined the Center six months ago. He has been working with a SLP student
on being independent while shopping. One day he decided to go by himself to the
pharmacy and returned home with his medicine and a victorious smile. ‘I did it! D.K.
Ever since I joined the Caregiver’s Group, I have learned to trust my husband’s abilities
and to let him do more things on his own. A.C.
After the experience at the Center, I asked myself how I, as a simple person, can help
these people to integrate back into society, to promote and help themselves and to find
their comfortable place. As a future doctor, this experience has given me the opportunity
to look beyond scans, measures and medical information. It has given me the chance to
have a look at whole families, as well as the members themselves and certain personal

SENATE AND GENERAL ASSEMBLY STATE OF NEW JERSEY
By Senator WEINBERG, Assemblyman JOHNSON, Assemblywoman VAINIERI
HUTTLE, Senator GORDON, Assemblywoman WAGNER and Assemblyman EUSTACE
WHEREAS, Elaine and Mike Adler, who are active and dedicated members of their
Garden State community, will be honored and saluted by the Adler Aphasia Center
during its Stars of Innovation Tenth Anniversary Gala on September 28, 2013; and,
WHEREAS, Throughout many years, Elaine and Mike Adler have demonstrated
outstanding dedication and steadfast commitment to their fellow citizens as evidenced
by their exemplary history of community leadership and volunteerism; and,
WHEREAS, Elaine and Mike Adler, who are renowned as the founders of the Adler
Aphasia Center in Maywood, have also served with distinction as co-founders of the
Myron Corporation; and,
WHEREAS, Elaine and Mike Adler have given generously of their time and energy
as members of and leaders within several community organizations, including the
Boards of the U.J.A., the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for Humanism in Medicine, the
Center for Inter-Religious Understanding, and Hackensack Hospital; and,
WHEREAS, An array of awards bears witness to the many accomplishments of
Elaine and Mike Adler, and they have been honored by the A.D.L., the Boys Town of
Jerusalem, Ramapo College, Bergen Community College, and the National Aphasia
Association; and,

WHEREAS, The people of the State of New Jersey are genuinely indebted to hardworking
and inspiring citizens, personified by Elaine and Mike Adler, who are devoted
to improving the effectiveness of their communities and the quality of life for their
neighbors; and,
WHEREAS, Their energetic and enthusiastic service to the Adler Aphasia Center, as
well as their extraordinary degree of involvement in the life of the community, has
earned for Elaine and Mike Adler the respect and admiration of this Legislature and
the people of this State; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
That this Legislature hereby honors and congratulates Elaine and Mike Adler, joins in
commending their meritorious record of service, leadership, and commitment, and
extends best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors; and,
Be It Further Resolved, That a duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by
the Senate President and the Assembly Speaker and attested by the Senate Secretary

Aphasia is a language disorder that impairs the expression and understanding
of spoken language, reading and writing. It occurs most often from stroke
or brain injury. This frustrating condition affects a person’s ability
to communicate, but does not affect his or her intellect.
