Dear Readers
15 Years Later, Our Work Is Just Beginning
July marked the 15 th anniversary of the creation of GLI. Simply put, GLI continues to be the culmination
of an idea that created the first-ever independent gaming test laboratory. The laboratory focuses on
accuracy and efficiency of providing gaming equipment test results while providing customer service to
regulators and to suppliers. After 15 years, while we take a moment to reflect on the past, we continue to
expand and push forward more aggressively than ever, as we know there is much work to do.
Private Laboratory Testing Continues To Catch On
We’re pleased to announce GLI will begin to provide both gaming device and systems test results to the
Mississippi Gaming Commission. GLI Africa will once again be providing test results for all types of
gaming equipment to the South African market. GLI Italia was formed to provide world-class customer
service and testing in the Italian AWP market, providing us with another European location and further
resources to allocate workloads worldwide. This fall, GLI will announce the opening of our first Asian
office to better support the expansion of gaming in the Far East. GLI has been testing for entities there
for nearly 3 years and currently supplies nearly all of the testing data to the Macau government.
World Headquarters Expanded
Increases in demand and ever evolving complexity of technology used in the gaming industry have
required that GLI double the size of its new world headquarters to nearly 100,000 square feet. A twostory
breezeway overlooking a park-like setting will connect the new and current buildings. The facility
will house a second full-scale interoperability center (replicating our first which is found at our Las Vegas
office), a conference and training center, and hold up to another 110 employees, moving us to over 220
employees at our World headquarters and to over the 400 employee mark worldwide when completed.
This critical expansion will allow us to produce the most accurate test results possible while further
reducing time between submittals and certification.
Strengthening our Management Team
We have restructured our management team to take GLI through our expansion plans and beyond. We
have decentralized management and customer service decisions, giving our top-line managers the authority
to get things done, and get things done right. We have relocated most of our development and marketing
team in Las Vegas, giving us the instant feedback necessary to meet the challenges of new markets, and we
added a South American development specialist to assist us in that rapidly changing region.
SEPTEMBER
through
MARCH
2005
Our Commitment is steadfast and forward thinking
As you can see from our plans, we refuse to become complacent in what we do. We hope regulators and
suppliers know that, even after 15 years, we realize we have a lot of work to do. Every day we seek out new
ideas and technology, allowing us to deliver test results in the most accurate way possible while maintaining
the efficiency we’re known for. While we are proud of our first 15 years, we think the next 15 can be better.
I look forward to seeing each of you somewhere on the globe.
New Office Opens in Bologna, Italy
GLI has opened a new test facility in Bologna, Italy. GLI Italia is a
division of GLI Europe, BV and will service the country’s rapidly
expanding Amusement-with-Prizes (AWP) market. The 630 square-metre
a mix of engineers and support staff, and Director-Operations, Roger
Farrell, will oversee the office’s operation.
The Italian AWP market has been experiencing explosive growth recently,
drawing interest from more than 200 manufacturers, and experts estimate
the market could grow to upwards of 200,000 devices. The rapid growth
directly led to GLI’s establishing a permanent office in the area.
l to r: Edgardo Cometto, Paula de Benito, Jennifer
Farrell, Andres de Benito, José Zuluaga, Elena
Nannoni, and Roger Farrell
GLI signed an accreditation contract with AAMS to test AWP devices for
the Italian market this past February. The signing was part of a recent
meeting held in conjunction with AAMS in Rome. GLI Italia has
successfully processed a number of submissions for Italian and other
European manufacturers.
2nd Annual European Regulator Roundtable a Huge Success
GLI recently completed its second annual European Regulators
Roundtable. The successful two-day event focused on technology that
regulators will soon be encountering. GLI constantly strives to stay ahead
continent armed with the very latest information.
Twenty-one regulators from across the continent attended the two-day
event, representing Great Britain, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, The
Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. The conference
was held at the Schiphol Hilton Hotel in The Netherlands, and GLI
hosted the seminar free of charge.
Todd Elsasser, Executive Director of Engineering,
addressing the European Regulators Roundtable
Topics addressed included cashless gaming, Ticket In Ticket Out (TITO), wireless standards, Intranet, downloadable games,
Internet and related age-verification issues. An entire session was dedicated to cheating, covering a range of topics including
Gaming Laboratories Africa provides test reports to SABS and South African Regulators
GLI Africa will once again provide test results directly to the African market from its offices in Pretoria, South Africa. With
the passage of the new Gaming Act, which was recently signed into law, private laboratories are now required to perform
gaming equipment testing there, delivering the test results to regulators and to the South African Bureau of Standards-
Regulatory Division. For the past two years, the process has been less than clear, allowing for GLI Australia to provide test
results to the South African market while testing done by laboratories in Africa and in Europe was not accepted consistently.
"This clarification in the Gaming Act has been a long time coming and we are pleased that we can immediately begin
processing test results for suppliers around the world through our offices here in Africa", said Thiran Marimuthu, Technical
Manager of GLI Africa. For more information please contact Thiran at GLI Africa +27 11 314 6877.
AUSTRALIA
GLI Australia tests TOTI
GLI Australia has recently completed testing of TOTI (Ticket Out/Ticket In). In Australia & New Zealand regulators have
adopted the acronym TOTI as apposed to TITO. The first system was approved for field trial in Sky City Casino in Auckland,
New Zealand. This is the first system in the region where tickets can be redeemed directly on another machine via the Bank
note acceptor; these systems have been commonplace in jurisdictions such as the United States for some time. Previously, all
cashless gaming required the use of a card based system. GLI Australia used its body of knowledge along with its experience as
a proven systems tester, to develop TOTI standards that were relevant against the Australian New Zealand National Standards.
GLI Australia exhibits at AGE—Continues to test internationally
GLI Australia exhibited at the recent Australasian Gaming Expo (AGE) in Sydney. The show provided an excellent opportunity
for clients to discuss international markets with senior managers on hand from the US and Europe, as well as to reach
manufacturers from around the region including Taiwan, Korea and Singapore. GLI Australia is continuing its long history of
providing regulatory certification to markets beyond the shores of Australia and to those manufacturers based both within and
outside Australia. With our clients’ strong focus on international growth, GLI Australia is highly valued by some of Australia’s
best known names. GLI Australia is the only laboratory in the region that provides full access to international markets such as
the US, Europe and Asia, giving manufacturers instant access to information and testing services all in the same time zone.
GLI to provide test results to The Mississippi Gaming Commission
We are pleased to announce that GLI will begin providing test results directly to the Mississippi
Gaming Commission. GLI will provide both gaming device and system test results to the
commission on an outsourcing basis. The Mississippi Gaming Commission will review GLI results
and, when applicable, issue certification reports to the industry. We look forward to participating in
this exciting development and continuing to support similar types of cooperation between our firm
and government laboratories worldwide. Mississippi joins jurisdictions around the world that
operate their own lab who now also accept outsourced test results, subject to verification. Other
such laboratories include Nevada, New South Wales (Australia) and Queensland (Australia).
C E L E B R A T I O N
This July, GLI celebrated 15 years in
business, and 15 years of incredible
growth. The company began with a
vision of an independent test lab
that could keep pace with the
rapid expansion of gaming into
new jurisdictions, and in
September 1987, Maida
founded JRM Enterprises.
Then, on July 1, 1989, Maida
and Paul J. Magno morphed
JRM Enterprises into Gaming
Laboratories International,
Inc. (GLI), and located the new
company’s world headquarters
in Toms River, New Jersey.
Since then, GLI has entered into more
than 380 contracts worldwide to perform
machine testing and certification on more
than 300,000 devices.
GLI has been able to grow and be trusted
by different government bodies around
the world because we have remained
true to our values: integrity,
independence, commitment and
excellent customer service. As
gaming has expanded,
regulators have turned to us
to help ensure the industry
maintains the highest levels
of trust and accountability,
and it is our core values that
allow regulators to rely on us.
In the same month we
celebrated our 15 year anniversary,
GLI was granted the first-ever
gaming test lab license in Panama,
opened a fully staffed test lab in Italy, and
is preparing to break ground on the expansion
of its headquarters.
