The end of any academic year brings all 

the stakeholders and partners in Catholic 

education an opportunity to reflect on the 

successes of the year and to plan for the 

hopes and aspirations for the future. 

The wonderful pictures and articles 

herein are a snapshot of all the exceptional 

events that have taken place at our school 

in the areas of academics, the arts, and 

athletics. These pages are brimming 

with memories of excellence and speak 

of the caliber of our students and staff. 

The dedication and commitment of 

the entire community is reflected in 

the many good works of our students. 

As we begin to transition our grade 

12 students into post-secondary life, I 

would like to express my sense of pride in 

their generous Prom contribution to the 

Make-A-Wish Foundation. In the spirit 

of giving generously and hospitality, 

these students donated a portion of 

their own prom money to support the 

worthy work of this organization.

Chaplaincy Team Leaders 

The last three months have been very busy 

in chaplaincy. The grade nines attended 

retreats at ShadowLake, where they 

were surrounded by the beauty of nature 

and had a fun day run by Father Felix 

Linatoc and the Peer Ministers. The grade 

tens attended retreats at Variety Village 

where they learned how people with 

different physical abilities need a variety 

of specialized equipment and, in this 

process, learned to appreciate their own 

healthy bodies. 

ShareLife was a huge undertaking this year. 

We had a full day of activities that started 

with inspirational talks in the morning 

followed by a walk in the neighbourhood 

and ending with carnival activities in 

the courtyard. We were entertained by 

talented staff and students under our St. 

E. tent. In the theatre, we had our very 

own, first ever Idol Competition. Nine 

students participated in this competition 

and were able to raise over $100.00 for 

ShareLife, however, Caroline Ruscella 

raised $2000.00 to be in this competition. 

We were very fortunate to have Mr. Zack 

Werner and Mr. Brian Roman as judges 

as well as our own team of teacher judges; 

Ms. Carey, Ms. Mansell, and Mr. B. 

Morrison. Together with the audience 

participation in the voting process, they 

hailed Rey Reyes as the winner of the 

competition. He has won a $1000.00 

package of workshops of his choice from 

Mr. Zack Werner’s Idol school ‘istars’. 

We are very grateful for our amazingly 

generous school community for raising 

over $21,000.00 for ShareLife and also for 

participating in this wonderful ShareLife 

day on May 31st. Most especially we are 

grateful to the dedicated team of teachers 

that organized this day: Ms. Volpe, Ms. 

Guinci, Ms. Walcott, Ms. Ziorli, Ms. 

Frade, Mr. Corrigan, Ms. Titus, Ms. 

Matthews, and Mr. Cheng and to all 

the student volunteers, too numerous to 

mention, who worked so hard and assisted 

with this year’s event. 

Our closing Liturgy was on June 7th and 

the choir, dancers, and Father Felix’s 

inspirational homily made our last Mass 

of the year very special. It was at this Mass 

that the students’ ShareLife messages 

were turned into cranes and offered up to 

God. These cranes will in turn be sent to 

Japan where a thousand cranes are said 

to help our prayerful intentions come to 

light. Our prayer to the people of Japan 

is that the 1000 folded cranes will help 

fulfill their prayers to rebuild their lives 

after the terrible earthquake and tsunami 

that befell them this past year. Also at 

our Mass we presented the ShareLife 

representative, Dean, with a cheque for 

over $17,000.00. This was the largest 

amount our school has ever raised; we are 

so blessed! 

We want to thank our current team of 

Peer Ministers for their wonderful work 

this year in leading us in prayer, and 

assisting with our grade nine retreats, as 

well as all the other awesome things they 

helped out with. We are so blessed to 

have such a dedicated team helping us all 

year long. We just finished our selection 

for next year’s Peer Ministry team and 

they are looking forward to the Torch 

Leadership training at Mt. Alverno in the 

fall.

Once again, Mrs. Vetro's grade 11 

Marketing students worked hard in 

preparing a successful marketing 

fair. They promoted their very own 

radio ads and flyers which contributed 

to a successful fair. It is no surprise 

that the students had a great 

turnout. Selling popsicles, ice cream 

sandwiches, popcorn, timbits and ice 

Cappuccino's from Tim Horton's, the 

Marketing students raised $1448.30. 

This money will be donated to support 

Breast Cancer Research in Ontario. 

The Marketing students would like to 

thank all staff and students for their 

support!

MODEL UN Club Competes at UNYCA VII

On June 3rd nine delegates from Ms. Kata’s Model UN Club 

represented St. Elizabeth at UNYCA VII- the YCDSB Model United 

Nations conference. As ambassadors of Germany, Iraq, Somalia, 

Cambodia and Iceland, our students defended the foreign national 

policies of their countries on a variety of UN councils. Our delegates 

prepared for over a month for this rigorous and competitive full day 

event. Our students demonstrated excellence in their professional 

dress, debates, speeches and resolutions and all our delegates deserve 

recognition for representing themselves and St. Elizabeth so proudly 

and professionally. Special recognition goes to Richard Mojica who 

received a UNYCA VII award for best delegate in his committee. Thank 

you to all and we hope to expand our membership with new students 

from all grades for UNYCA VIII next spring. 

‘SCRIBBLES’ MAKES A 

diFFERENCE

Scribbles for Success would like to thank the 

St. Elizabeth community for the generous 

donations of school supplies. With your help, 

we have ended this second year with great 

success. Here are some of the highlights: 

December 2010: A suitcase full of 

these supplies was given to Ms. Lyander to 

be donated to a school in Tanzania, Africa. 

According to Ms. Lyander, the children were 

thrilled to receive their pencils. 

March 2011: With the help of our school 

board consultant, Ms. Deidre Vance, one box 

of writing utensils was donated to aboriginal 

students in our community. Four boxes of 

school supplies were also given to Father 

Brian from the Missionaries of the Poor. The 

donations will help to support volunteers in 

establishing a new school in Kenya. 

April 2011: During our Scribbles for 

Success Civies Day, we were able to collect 

10 boxes of writing utensils. These 

school supplies went to St. Gaspar’s, 

a primary school in Tanzania. The full 

amount of money collected from the 

civies day also funded the water project 

in Tanzania. The water project will fund 

the building of a windmill to pump fresh 

underground water for the local villagers 

to use. 

May 2011: In our continued 

commitment to help those in need, 

during our ShareLife Day, we promoted 

Scribbles for Success to all the grade 

nine students. Through a multimedia 

presentation, representatives from 

Scribbles for Success, Ms. Lyander, and 

Mr. Ho shared their thoughts on the need 

to help make a difference. Hence, the 

slogan’s harpening minds one pencil at 

a time”, encouraged students to donate 

extra school supplies to students around 

the world. At our ShareLife Carnival, 

many students visited our booth where we 

had our Eraser Toss Game. Students who 

participated paid a fee to play the game 

and all donations went to support the 

purchase of new pencils. 

June 2011: Our Scribbles for Success

invited students to donate their unused 

school supplies. We also placed two tall 

donation boxes, one in front of the main 

office and another in front of the chapel 

for students to drop off school supplies 

during their locker cleanout. 

We would once again like to extend many 

thanks to the St. Elizabeth community. We 

truly had an amazing year. So remember … 

if you see a pencil, pick it up! It could make 

a world of difference in a child’s education.

Our grade 11 and 12 students participated in The University of Toronto National 

Biology Competition. Congratulations to Lauren Moretto who earned a 

certificate of achievement as well as a National Biology Scholar certificate. Also, 

congratulations to Luke Fraccaro and Mark Fraccaro. Excellent job. We are 

very proud of these students and we wish them much success, hopefully in the 

biological scientific field.

On May 31st, the grade 11 environmental science class took part 

in a national solar oven challenge! Across the country, students 

from grades 3 to 12 were challenged to design, construct and 

test solar ovens that demonstrated the principles of passive 

solar power. The solar ovens constructed ranged in size, shape 

and composition, each reflecting the creative ideas of the 

construction team. On test day, students explored the best 

angles for capturing solar energy and made a variety of foods 

in their solar ovens from mini pizzas, to ‘healthy grilled cheese’ 

and even nachos. The class was awarded top honours with 

distinction for their participation and will receive a class set of 

solar powered cars for their work. Congratulations!

Sharing Important Environmental Message at York Children's Water Festival! 

Ms. J. Shih, Science Teacher 

On May 20th, senior level science students volunteered for the York Children's Water Festival at Bruce’s Mill Conservation 

Area. Each student was responsible for leading young children through activities, games and workshops designed to educate 

youth on the importance of conserving water for our future. Our students did an amazing job, enthusiastically engaging the 

children in environmental-friendly activities and earned ten hours of community service for their work. Thanks to all those 

who volunteered their time and talents to help make the event successful!

As the academic year comes to an end, we recall the wonderful year that our students had in their Modern Language classes. 

Not only did the students learn how to speak, read, write and listen in another language, but they were immersed in the French, 

Italian and Spanish cultures by way of song, dance, theatre, cuisine , music and magic. Some of the highlights of the year were 

Le Théâtre Français/Café Crêpe, a scavenger hunt on College Street/Café Diplomatico, Latin Fever/Spanish cuisine, Marc Tardif le 

Magicien, Le Carnaval, Salsa lessons, an Italian Cooking class, International Women’s Day and many more activities. I would like 

to thank all the Moderns Department teachers for organizing such fabulous events and for making the language classes enjoyable. 

On behalf of the Moderns Department, I wish all our students a wonderful and safe summer holiday. 

Hello, my name is Katy 

McNabb and, as some of 

you may know, I went to 

France for three months 

in second semester of 

my grade 10 year. I don’t 

know how the whole 

process really started, 

but in grade 9 I was very 

interested in languages, 

travelling and cultures. I 

have always been open to 

new ideas and concepts so I started to look into 

an exchange. Since French is the only 

language I know, I decided France would 

be the best country to go to to improve 

my French speaking skills. At this point 

I didn’t realize how much this exchange 

would change my life. 

The process took forever, finding a 

good exchange company, filling out the 

30-page personal application, getting 

teachers to sign all sorts of forms and 

letters of recommendation. Finally after 

a few months, I was ready to hand in my 

application. In June 2010 I got the most 

exciting letter of my life, the exchange 

company sent me the details of my 

exchange partner, Lili, all the way from 

France! As I read her information I was 

more and more excited to meet her and 

for her to come to Canada. See, these 

exchanges work in a really cool way. The 

French student comes to live with you 

for three months first, then you go to 

live with them for three months! This 

way you can learn about each other’s 

cultures, lives and families. 

When Lili was here we did so many things that 

I would never have done if she were not here; 

we canoed across from Toronto to Toronto 

Island, went to Buskerfest and even went to 

a Maple Leafs game! It was amazing to show 

her everything that seemed normal to me, but 

for her was completely absurd, such as bagged 

milk, automatic cars and yellow school buses. 

Having Lili in Canada was one of the best 

experiences of my life, and when she left to go 

back to France I was so sad, but I knew I would 

be going to visit her in a few short weeks for 

three months. 

I want to let you all know that I am deathly 

afraid of planes, so an eight-hour 

plane ride to France was not a piece 

of cake for me. I managed to get 

to France in one piece and hopped 

off the plane to meet Lili and her 

amazing French family. They were 

kind and welcoming. They brought 

me to their house, got me settled in 

and showed me around their village! 

I went to school with Lili, went to 

Paris and did a lot of shopping and 

even went swimming in the ocean a 

few times. Going to France was by 

far the most amazing experience 

of my life (so far). I met tons 

of new people, some that I will 

have to go back and visit again! 

It was so hard to leave after three 

months, but I know I’ll be back. 

On a positive note it’s almost 

unbelievable to see how much 

my French has improved! I can 

proudly say that I can understand 

French 100% and speak it at about 

90%! I am thinking next year of 

going to Germany…! I couldn’t 

have done this exchange without my parents, 

my teachers and Mrs. Carey’s help! Thank you 

so much, I love and appreciate you all!

his Spanish class enjoyed 

a day of salsa dance 

lessons and fine Spanish 

food. The group enjoyed 

some great Latin music 

at Latin Fever Night 

Club in Vaughan while 

learning some fine dance 

moves with the help of a 

professional instructor. 

At first everyone was shy, 

but it did not take long to 

show off some fancy foot 

work. After this enjoyable 

workout, it was lunch… 

an authentic meal of 

arroz con pollo and other 

delicious treats. Que día! 


UNE ANNÉE FORMIDABLE FOR THE MODERN 

lanGUAGES COUNCIL!! 

Mlle Volpe, Moderns Teacher 

Mlle Volpe and Mlle Guinci would like to congratulate the 

members of the Modern Languages Council for a very successful 

year! The council’s mission is to celebrate language, food, 

dance, art, film and holidays of various cultures around the 

world! The students should be very proud of all of the great 

events they organized this year such as salsa lessons open to 

the entire student body, foreign film screenings in the theatre, a 

cooking workshop led by a professional chef and Carnaval Week, 

complete with a crepe café and Bonhomme Carnaval himself! 

Next year we hope to organize a trip to Montreal in mid-May! If 

you are interested, please see Mlle Volpe or Mlle Guinci to put 

your name on the list!

NATIONS UNITED: A WORLD 

OF FUN! 

Mr. B. Morrison, ESL Department Head 

Nations United has had a very busy second 

semester! The club, comprised of students from 

all over the world, meets every second Thursday 

to engage in a variety of different activities 

ranging from sports, to cooking, to trips 

and entertainment. Some 

highlights from this semester 

included yoga led by Ms. Volpe, 

cooking pancakes for Mardi 

Gras, and an international 

game of soccer on the back 

field. The members of the club 

are also interested in trying 

new activities, so in March, 

we participated in a session 

of Zumba, an exhilarating 

(and exhausting) blend of 

aerobics and Latin dance. 

We invited Vito Varone, a St. Elizabeth 

alumnus, to lead the session as Vito is 

now a personal trainer who has started 

his own fitness company, VFit. The club’s 

activities continued in May as Nations 

United headed down for a tour of the Royal 

Ontario Museum. Most of the members 

had never been to the ROM before and 

were impressed by the dinosaur 

display, now housed in the recently 

constructed “Crystal.” Two weeks 

later, the club went to Wonderland 

to enjoy a day at the park. Although 

there had been much rain on the 

morning of this day, we were blessed 

with a dry, wonderful day with the 

park in full operation. The semester 

quickly came to a close and Nations 

United held a small Graduation 

Reception for the English Language 

Learners who will be leaving the St. 

Elizabeth community at the end of 

June. We will miss these students 

very much, but Ms. DiPetro, Mr. 

Layne, Ms. Adorante, Ms. Pirrello, 

and Mr. B. Morrison wish them 

the very best as they begin a new, 

exciting chapter in their lives!

ARtiST JACKSON HALL GIVES WORKSHOP, KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT ILLUMINATI

Mr. D. Paolini, Visual Arts Teacher 

May 2nd Toronto artist Elizabeth Jackson Hall conducted a painting workshop for Mr. 

Paolini's grade 11 rap students. Each day the class began at 7:30 a.m. and ran through to 

the end of first period at 9:30 a.m. The painting workshop conducted by Ms. Jackson 

was an experience that this particular group of students will certaintly refer to as one of 

the highlights of their high school life. The absolute belief and trust in Ms. Jackson as a 

professional painter and as a person who is knowledgeable and personable was evident 

from the very beginning. This resulted in the complete committment of the group to 

participate in this enriching exercise. We are extremely grateful to Ms. Jackson for sharing 

her knowledge of painting and providing our students with this opportunity. 

'ILLUMINATI'- 'SPARKLES' 

ONCE AGain 


Illuminati, St. Elizabeth's annual 

showcase of visual art took place on May 

19th. It certainly is an important 

event on the school calendar and acts as a 

reaffirmation of the quality and quantity 

of outstanding visual art works created 

by St. Elizabeth's visual arts students. 

This display of artwork encompasses 

all the variables within the visual arts 

discipline, such as, sculpting, painting, 

drawing, printmaking and media. Both 

Comprehensive and Regional Arts 

students are involved and it takes place, 

beginning in the ramp area leading to the 

theatre, and continues into the theatre 

lobby and fully realizes itself within the 

cavernous space of the theatre proper. 

The fact that 'Illuminati' is staged 

on such a grand scale, taking over the 

entire theatre as a 'gallery' is down to the 

foresight and imagination of Mr. Fabian 

Walsh, Vice Principal. Distinguished 

guests attending this year’s exhibition 

included: Mrs. Teresa Ciaravella, 

Trustee, York Catholic District 

School Board; Ms. Patricia Preston, 

Associate Director, York Catholic 

District School Board; Mrs. Angela Di 

Prima, Principal, St. Elizabeth C.H.S.; 

and Mr. Lou Paonessa, former Vice 

Principal of St. Elizabeth. The 

Keynote Speaker for the evening was 

Ms. Elizabeth Jackson Hall, noted 

Toronto artist and painter who, in her 

address to the audience, encouraged

MARCH BREAK / LONDON-PARIS / AMAZING 


The 'March Break Tour' to London and 

Paris was from March 11th to 20th. The 

adventure of a lifetime and a 'magical 

mystery tour' was enjoyed by all. On 

landing in London, we were met by 

our private coach and the adventure of 

enjoying the many fantastic sights of the 

British capital began. Everything from 

Big Ben, The Tower of London, The British 

Museum, Trafalgar Square, doubledecker 

buses, fish and chips, The 'Tube', 

Carnaby Street, St. Paul's Cathedral, 

Buckingham Palace and The Changing 

of the Guard and Shakespeare's 

Globe Theatre to The Beatles 

famous Recording Studio 'Abbey 

Road', were just some of the many highlights enjoyed by the group. After five days in 

London it was off to Paris, another amazing European 

capital, by way of a Chunnel crossing where the group 

had a private car. Students chose to either rest, text, 

play cards, swap photos, eat, or read during our twohour 

crossing. On arriving in Paris, we were quickly 

moved to our hotel, then enjoyed a walking tour of 

our immediate area of Les Halles, the Pompidou 

Centre, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Latin Quarter. 

Many other sights were to follow: the Eiffel Tower 

and a visit to Montmartre; (the artists’ district of the 

early 20th century and home to Picasso, Van Gogh, Renoir, and Monet, to mention a few). It is 

also renown as the locale of the Moulin Rouge where we had to stop and take our obligatory group 

photo. We visited the Louvre Museum, The Musée d'Orsay, The Catacombs, Père-Lechaise and the 

grave sites of Jim Morrison (lead singer of The Doors, Oscar Wilde, Chopin and others. We visited 

Notre-Dame Cathedral and walked high up amongst the Gargoyles taking photos and looking out 

over the city, we walked and shopped along the Champs-Elysées, we cruised along the River Seine at 

night and visited the underpass where Princess Diana tragically passed. It certainly was an experience of a lifetime for these students 

to enjoy with their friends, both old and new. It is easy to see why this London/Paris experience was voted 'Trip of The Year'.

The Senior Girls Basketball team had a great

boys lost to a team from the East division in 

the first round. The team finished in second 

place at an invitational tournament they

The Junior Girls Volleyball team finished their 

regular season in fourth place and qualified for 

the playoff round. The Junior Panthers played

The Senior Boys Basketball team had a good 

season finishing in third place in the regular 

season. The team then went to the Tier 1 playoff 

round but lost the first game to St. Jean de 

Brebeuf. Congratulations to all team members

JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM – coached

The Junior Boys Basketball team finished 

their season in first place and went to the

determined junior panthers made it to the 

finals and defeated Aurora High School to

Congratulations to all swim team members on 

a great season. Special mention goes to the 

following girls for placing in the top three at the 

York Region Championship meet at the Junior 

level: Cynthia Undyantara for finishing first in 

the 100-meter IM as well as the following girls 

for finishing third in the 200-meter medley 

relay: Sara Toniolo, Cynthia Undyantara, 

Carolina Uscategui, Sarah Sutherland and 

Christina Gorman. 

BOYS WRESTLING TEAM – coached by 

Mr. Moretto 

The Boys Wrestling team had a fantastic 

season doing well in the invitational meets. 

The team finished in third place in the boys 

category at the York Region Championship 

meet. The following athletes finished 

in the top four in their category: Kwasi 

Amoateng – 2nd, Jonathan Malloy – 2nd, 

Tristan Nurse – 1st, Daniel Palomo – 

4th. The following six wrestlers qualified

Olivia Calouro. Special mention goes to Rodney 

Fajardo who was a York Region Champion in long 

jump and qualified to compete at the OFSAA 

Championships. Congratulations to all team

ULTIMATE FRISBEE TEAM – coached by

The Ultimate Frisbee team finished in first place 

in regular season in Tier 2. At the end of season 

playoff tournament, the team finished in fourth

TABLE TENNIS TEAM – coached by Ms. Spicer 

The Table Tennis team had a very successful season. 

Jordan Lima, Daniel King-Costa, Iman Hashemi, 

Alexander Lima, Andrew Freitas, Nicholas 

Mancini, Veronica Fu and Amanda Toniolo all 

qualified for York regionals. At the regionals, 

Jordan Lima and Daniel King-Costa finished in 

third place and Veronica Fu and Amanda Toniolo 

finished in second place. 

FLS Success at the Special 

Olympics! 

Ms. T. Nunnari, Special Education 

Department 

On June 7th, the Functional Life Skills 

students of St. Elizabeth CHS participated 

in the Track and Field Special Olympics at St. 

Joan of Arc CHS. With excitement and great 

enthusiasm, the students put forth their best 

efforts in each of the events they participated 

in. Each student participated in three 

activities of their choice. Among these were 

the 50 meter run, 100 meter run, standing 

long jump, pool noodle toss, basketball throw, 

bean bag toss, and shot put. The students 

of St. Elizabeth represented our school 

well. Their school spirit and sportsmanship 

prevailed throughout the entire day’s events. 

Our students’ participation and success in 

the events they participated in rendered 

them 1st place ribbons. We extend our 

congratulations to Marco DiPaolo, Jonathan 

Tedesco, Anthony Lewis, Kayla Santoli, Alex 

Gebrehet and Grischa Dykman. A special 

thank-you to Ms. Guiyab and to the EA’s for 

their hard work in preparing the students for 

the day’s events! Congratulations!

Mrs. P. Presutto, Department Head of Co-op 

Co-operative Education enables students to 

earn credits while developing employability 

skills in a career that they will pursue in their 

future. Students can test-drive a career and 

build hands-on-experience that will enable them 

to obtain employability skills in a wide variety 

of careers. This semester co-op placements 

have included the following: accounting, 

autoservice technician, banking, business, 

carpentry, culinary arts, early childhood 

education, electrical, esthetics, fashion arts, 

fitness training, graphic design, hairstyling, law 

enforcement, television production, nursing, 

plumbing, photography, recording engineering, 

retail and teaching. 

The Accelerated Program offers students 8 weeks 

of intense training at a Community College or 

Training Facility where students who pass will 

receive their LEVEL ONE APPRENTICESHIP.

Accountability Office (EQAO) indicated that 88% 

of St. Elizabeth students who wrote the Ontario 

Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) this past 

March were successful, compared to 83% provincially

ANAPHYLACTIC ALERT! 

Protecting anaphylactic students from exposure to 

life-threatening substances creates a major challenge 

to schools. When accidental exposure triggers an 

anaphylactic reaction, there is no time to waste. The 

usual procedure is: 

• Administer the EpiPen 

• Call 911 for ambulance 

• Contact family members 

Information/Awareness/Responsibility 

• Parents must alert the school to a child’s 

anaphylactic allergies every year in September. 

• Parents must provide the school with two up-to-date

your hard work, devotion and professionalism 

in maintaining the high level of education 

that St. Elizabeth is well known for!!! 

I would like to express my sincere appreciation 

to all the parents who volunteered their time 

on Council this past year. Saying thank you 

doesn’t seem to be adequate for all your hard 

work. Your time, support and dedication to the 

students at St. Elizabeth should be commended. 

A sad good-bye to all parents who are leaving 

the Parent Council, you will be missed, thanks 

for your help and dedication. Hope to see you 

all again at our first Council meeting in the fall 

when parents elect and welcome a new Council. 

I would like to wish everyone at St. Elizabeth a 

wonderful and safe summer. Take this time to 

enjoy some relaxation, sun and fun with family 

and friends. Throughout the school year we are 

all so busy with the hustle and bustle of our daily 

lives. I hope that the next two months will allow 

you to slow your pace down even if just for a
