BE AT PEACE
by St. Francis de Sales,
Adapted by D. Bennett
Father,
Help us to not look
forward in fear to the
changes in life;
Rather, may we look to the
future with full hope, because
as changes arise, You will lead
us safely through all things,
because we are your very own,
and when we cannot stand
it, You will carry us in Your
arms.
With You, we shall not fear
what may happen tomorrow;
because you are the
understanding Father who
cares for us today, and who
will care for us tomorrow and
every day.
We have faith, O Lord,
That You will either shield
us from suffering, or give us
unfailing strength to bear it.
Put us at peace, and give us
the grace to put aside all
anxious thoughts and images.
We pray in the name of Jesus
Christ, Your Son, and Our
Lord. Amen.
Honouring the Past...
Celebrating the Present...
Anticipating the future
Mr. James Cocchetto, Vice Principal
This year, St. Elizabeth Catholic High School celebrated
25 years of Catholic education, and we gathered as
a community to celebrate this milestone. In addition,
we marked the 10th anniversary of the Regional Arts
Program with a spectacular gala fundraiser. Some of our
recent RAP alumni returned to entertain us with their
talents. On May 31, several hundred alumni as well
as current and former staff gathered at the school for
our 25th anniversary celebration. We were inspired by
the words of Dan Di Rocco, our founding principal, that
we should not take Catholic education for granted
and to ensure that we remain committed to providing
a strong spiritual and academic foundation for our
students so that they will gain the values and skills that
will allow them to flourish in the future. The evening
provided the opportunity to reconnect with old friends,
and enjoy slide show and digital yearbook displays
which allowed us to view the academic, athletic, and
extra-curricular accomplishments that will always be
part of our collective memories. To cap this memorable
year, we were honoured by the Most Reverend Bishop
Kirkpatrick, who celebrated a beautiful outdoor mass
with over 1700 students, staff, and special guests on
June 3rd. At the close of the liturgy, we presented a
cheque in the amount of $8,000.00 to ShareLife. The
money was raised through our ShareLife Day and the
generous donations of students and parents. We invite
you to take some time to read this newsletter and join
us in recognizing the many academic, artistic, athletic,
and extra-curricular accomplishments that make St.
Elizabeth CHS an excellent school. We would like
to acknowledge the contributions of several staff who
retired after many years of dedication to the vocation
of Catholic education: Anne Carey, Department Head
of Guidance, teacher, and counselor at St. Elizabeth
since 1989; Judy Iannucci, Mathematics teacher and
Department Head of Special Education since 2001;
Jayne Scarborough, Education Assistant since 1991;
our sincere thanks for their contribution to student success
in the classroom as well as for the time that they dedicated
to supporting a variety of extra-curricular activities that
enriched the lives of countless students over the years. I
would also like to welcome returning staff Amy Ferguson,
Mathematics, from her maternity leave. Thank you to the
We wish staff, students, and parents an opportunity for rest
and relaxation and time to create special family memories.
We remain committed to continuing our partnership
with all parents and guardians to achieve our common
goal of quality Catholic education for all students. To
the Graduating Class of 2013, we wish you all the best in
your future endeavours and may the knowledge, skills, and
back our current students and extend a special welcome to
the incoming grade 9s. We encourage students to remain
engaged in all aspects of school life at St. Elizabeth CHS.
WIND ENSEMBLE EARNS
SILVER AT NATIONAL
FESTIVAL!
Mr. P. Han, Music Department
On May 14, the Wind Ensemble (Grade 9/10 RAP
Band) performed at MusicFest Nationals which took
place at the University of Toronto. It was wonderful
to have accepted all the invitations that our various
groups have received over the last few years. This is the
highest level music festival/competition in Canada and
the students experienced the difference. They played
their hearts out and received the Silver Award; most
importantly, they conducted themselves very professionally like true St. Elizabeth students. The one-hour educational workshop
was extremely valuable and we took a lot of great notes to use in the future. Thanks to everyone for this. This couldn't have
happened without your support. Thanks to Mrs. K.L. Caruso for being a great supervisor and supporter of music.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL
COUNCIL: A YEAR OF
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Mrs. Heather Velocci, Mr. Gary Thompson,
Chairs
This academic year was filled with many exciting
accomplishments. Congratulations to our
graduates: we wish you the very best in your future
endeavours! We are confident that the skills that
you have acquired at St. Elizabeth will guide you
through the next phase in your life. May God bless
you and guide you on your new path. A special
thank you to the families who kindly supported our
fundraising campaign this year. Your generosity
allowed the purchase of many items on the wish list.
Our students’ education benefited by your donation
and the items that were purchased enhanced their
learning. To the teachers, support staff and
adminstration, we thank you for your hard work,
devotion and professionalism in maintaining the
high level of education for which St. Elizabeth is
well known. We express our sincere appreciation
to all the parents who volunteerd their time on
Council this year. Saying thank you doesn’t seem
adequate for all your hard work. Your time, support
and dedication to the students at St. Elizabeth
should be commended. Hope to see you all again at
our first meeting in the fall when parents welcome a
new Council. We wish everyone at St. Elizabeth
a wonderful and safe summer. Take this time to
enjoy some relaxation, sun and fun with family and
friends. Throughout the school year, we are all so
busy with the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.
We hope that the next two months will allow you to
slow your pace, even for a bit! May God bless all of
you and keep you safe.
FOUNDATION Our
Athletic Council organized three fundraising events during the school year:
a Staff-Student Soccer game in November; a Staff-Student Volleyball game
in February; and a Student vs. Student Ultimate game in May. These spiritbuilding
events had students and teachers generating some fun and friendly
competition for our students to watch. The Athletic Council raised $600.00
in aid of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Every dollar raised helps
Canadians with heart disease to live longer. Also, part of what the Heart and
Stroke Foundation promotes is healthy active living, which involves fitness
as well as healthy eating. The cheque was presented to Katherine Palumbo,
Area Coordinator, York South, of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, at our
MODERN LANGUAGES COUNCIL:
UNE ANNÉE FORMIDABLE!
Mlle Volpe, FSL and International Languages
Department
The Modern Languages Council had a very
successful year! Our mission is to promote a love
of International languages and cultures to instill
inclusivity and acceptance among the staff and
students. We began the year with a salsa dance lesson
by Ms. Ebanks! The dance studio was packed with
dancers of all experience levels! We look forward to
continuing this event next year! Carnaval was a great success! The week was filled with authentic French crêpes, accordion music
during lunch, prayers in different languages and carnival masks made by Nations United and the Special Education Department. By
selling crêpes, we were able to make a donation of $50 to Scribbles for Success! The council would like to thank its members for all
their hard work and dedication. A big thank you to Mlle Guinci and Mlle Volpe for supervising our events and working hard behind
the scenes. We would like to congratulate our new administration for next year: Nikita Zhukovic, President; Amanda Wzietek and
Olga Mudrachenko, Vice Presidents; Alessia Servidio and Rachel Courts, Secretaries. See you all in September! Have a wonderful
summer break!
LES
AVENTURES
DE TINTIN
Mme Bernabei,
Department Head of
FSL and International
Languages
Quelle aventure! On
May 24, the grade
9 academic French students had the
opportunity to enjoy Steven Spielberg’s
award-winning animation Les Aventures
de Tintin: Le secret de la Licorne. After
the purchase of a model ship, the
Unicorn, Tintin and his sidekick Snowy
are involved in an incredible adventure
in Morocco. With the help of Dupond
and Dupont, twin bumbling Interpol
agents, and the drunken Captain
Haddock, Tintin is able to prevent
Sakharine from obtaining the three
scrolls necessary to find the treasure
that rightfully belongs to Captain
Haddock. Tintin is always ready to
confront any obstacle and nothing
will hold him back. The film exposed
students to the French language and
to a variety of themes. All enjoyed
this amusing and adventure-packed
presentation of the original comic strip
created in 1929 by Hergé. The Tintin
series has been translated into 51
languages. Bravo!
VIVA L’ITALIANO!
The grade 10 Italian class was very busy
this semester with many projects. They
created some amazing family trees,
and prepared a fabulous luncheon,
starting with antipasto and finishing
with delicious Italian desserts, as they
presented their Ricetta italiana. They
also attended the Junior Italian Film
Festival at the Toronto
International Film Festival
and viewed the movie
Scialla, a story about a
young adolescent and his
relationship with his tutor
whom he discovers is really
his father. The students
enjoyed the experience and
the storyline.
For their culminating project, they
created children’s books based on an
Italian proverb, presented them to
the class, and explained the moral of
their proverb. The students were also
entertained by Mr. Bosco Fernandes
who brought in his guitar and sang
many Italian songs with the students,
such as Nel blu dipinto di blu (Volare),
O sole mio, Marina Marina, L’italiano
(Lasciatemi cantare), and Santa Lucia.
Che anno divertente!
La Chef à l’école!
Est-ce que vous aimez les langues de
chat?
Cat tongues are so delicious!
On May 7th, M. D’Astoli and Mlle
Guinci’s Grade 9 applied French
classes participated in a truly
unique French cooking experience
with Chef Suzanne! They prepared
langues de chat, a tasty French
biscuit.
Chef Suzanne cooked with the
students and immersed them
in the French language while
they listened to French music,
learned about the culture and
communicated with La chef and
classmates en français! The fun
atmosphere that Chef Suzanne
created while cooking with the
students boosted their enthusiasm
for learning the French language!
This exciting
event is one
that the
students will
never forget!
‘ALBERTINE EN CINQ
TEMPS’ - Le Théâtre Français et
Café Crêpe: Une Journée
Amusante et Délicieuse!
M. D’Astoli and Mlle Guinci, FSL
and International Languages
Quelle journée formidable! What an
incredible way to spend the day:
French theatre and a crêpe lunch. On
April 24th, Grade 10 and 12 French
students enjoyed the presentation
of Albertine en cinq temps by the
remarkable French-Canadian playwright Michel Tremblay presented by
Le Théâtre Français. The production of Tremblay’s masterpiece was flawless.
Tremblay’s Albertine in Five Times is a powerful exploration of the life of
one woman during five distinct periods in her life. In his title character,
Tremblay created an individual of enormous independence, warmth and
complexity who not only reveals to her audience the different stages of a
single life, but also the intricate ways in which memory simultaneously
enlightens and confuses our views of the past, the present and the future.
The 90-minute tour de force production moved the audience through
a frequently harrowing familial journey in the uplifting way in which
Tremblay wrote his text and allowed six actresses to depict Albertine
— and her sister Madeleine — with an acute interconnectedness that
renders a believable individual persona for an audience to observe as she
passes through 70 years of living. The outstanding acting coupled with an
authentic set and costumes made for a very interesting experience. When
the play was over, it was off to Café Crêpe for a special lunch consisting
of savoury and sweet crêpes. Que c’était délicieux! This was a great way to
experience French culture firsthand. Vive le français!
On April 10th, Ms. Volpe's
grade 10 Visual Arts class
went to the Art Gallery of
Ontario for an art making workshop.
The Art Gallery ran a show called
Revealing the Early Renaissance: Stories
and Secrets in Florentine Art. Students
learned about manuscripts from the
Early Renaissance and about authentic
materials used to make these ancient
manuscripts, such as vellum for the
pages and egg and different minerals
for the pigment. Students created their own manuscript page with our wonderful
guest instructor Stephanie, who led them through the various steps of manuscript
creation. The workshop included calligraphy and historiated intials, and the
students used paint and gold leaf to give their page an illuminated authentic look.
Students also had the chance to explore the permanent collection of the AGO.
To help celebrate our school’s 25th Anniversary,
Ms. Volpe's class created their own manuscript
illustrating the life of St. Elizabeth. Each student
was responsible for creating one page; all the pages
were displayed at our Anniversary Celebration! Ms.
Volpe would like to thank Ms. Ebanks for joining us
and for helping the students with the workshop! A
great day was had by all.
HONOURABLE MENTION IN
C’est là où je me cache,
LAW AND ORDER 201
On June 4th,
Mrs. Young’s
Civics class
welcomed
Constable
A. Watkis
as part of a
Q&A visit
designed
to help
students
clarify
issues on topics of law, policing and the courts. Constable
Watkis’ visit was an excellent opportunity to aid students
in their study of civic rights and responsibilities. It was
an entertaining and informative period that the class will
not soon forget. We are most grateful to Constable Watkis
for his time and agreeing to visit us. We look forward to
greeting him again.
CIVICS STUDENTS GET
ACTIVE FOR SHARE LIFE
Mrs. M. Young, Canadian and World Studies Department
As part of their study of Active Citizenship, students from
Mrs. Young’s grade 10 Civics class set out to discover
more about ShareLife and the difference that this Catholic
organization makes to thousands of people yearly through
the various organizations and charities that benefit from
its fundraising campaigns. By researching different groups
like Office of Refugees, Natural Family Planning, Rose
of Sharon, Mary Centre, Development and Peace, and
Covenant House, students became informed and developed
a deeper understanding of the mission and goal of each of
these organizations. With great enthusiasm, students came
to understand and appreciate the value of ShareLife and took
an ‘Active’ role in teaching each other. As part of the school’s
ShareLife celebrations and awareness campaign, the display
boards created by the students about each organization were
left on display in the school foyer for all to enjoy. As a class,
we learned new ways to become active and engaged and to
support the meaningful ways in which people share their
lives through ShareLife.
History Museums
Open at
St. Elizabeth!
In what seemed like a blast from
the past, Mrs. Young’s grade 10
History students hosted daily
themed presentations highlighting
important and transforming
events from Canada’s rich
heritage in Culture, Domestic
Affairs, Aboriginal Development,
French-English Relations, and
International Affairs. Students
worked tirelessly researching and
preparing interactive, visually
stimulating, informative and
hands-on presentations that
would help educate their peers on
their subjects of expertise. After
almost two weeks of preparation,
each day, students were able to
visit a themed museum and travel
through time at different decade
stations that focused on the
significance of various Canadian
innovations, people and events
of that time. The discoveries
were informative and fun for the
audience and a great experience
for presenters. Through their
creative costumes, decorations, informative displays and historical
artefacts, students did a phenomenal job transforming the
classroom into history museums.
ST. ELIZABETH ROCKED!
On April 12, the St. Elizabeth
community ROCKED to the musical
talents that the students had to offer.
The talent came from everywhere:
RAP, Comprehensive, non-music
students, and even alumni! Everyone
enjoyed a good mix of orginal music
which covered rock bands and
acoustic acts throughout the evening.
Great effort and teamwork from
bands such as Not The Bs, The Formals, and White Snow. Also
great to see were female representatives in rock by bands Crave The
Chaos, Question Mark,Band 13 and Falling Into Infinity. Beautiful
acoustic sets by Jacob Stellato, Matthew Giordano, Michelle
Cavaleri, John Galzote, Susie Mancini and Olivia Ruscillo.
ST. ELIZABETH COMES TOGETHER AGAIN IN SUPPORT
OF SHARELIFE
Mrs. I. Mancuso, Chaplain
Thank you so much to all of the St Elizabeth school community for
coming together this year to help make our first full day event a
huge success. We were able to raise approximately $13,000.00 this
year and, after food and other expenses, we were able to give the
ShareLife organization a total of $8,000.00.
Mr. Schincariol's SPH4U students created some
interesting Culminating Performance Projects this
semester. They included a Ping Pong Ball Cannon
(pictured), a Stirling Engine, bottle rockets, projectile
launchers, and various electrical generators.
From L: Scott Harrison, Amanda Toniolo, Christian
Marcello, Laurel Dykun, and Amro Isaac.
Fun was experienced by all in attendance. The weather was amazing
and we were able to enjoy the outdoor activities such as the walk in
the neighbourhood, the BBQ lunch, the inflatable games, water balloon
games, face painting, and musical entertainment.
We had the best ShareLife Committee members this year. Their
dedication to making this year’s event such a huge success was due
to the many hours they spent preparing for this day. A huge THANK
YOU goes out to all those staff members who assisted us with this
day. However, the biggest appreciation goes out to the students that
proved once again that this school community has a huge heart and
is very generous! Your commitment to the preferential option for
the poor and needy is exemplary! May God bless you all!
Visual Arts News
On March, 7, 2013, twenty-six students along with Mr. Chetty, Ms. Presutto and Mr.
Paolini departed for London England.
The much anticipated London to Paris ‘Trip of the Year’ was underway. Arriving in
London, the group was greeted by their private coach and taken to Kensington Close
Hotel. They boarded buses to enjoy a three-hour ‘Rock and Roll Tour. With music blaring
and students singing, we visited sites, homes and pubs frequented by many of the
legendary British bands of the 60s, 70s, and 80s: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones,
Queen, Jimi Hendrix, to name a few. This was the start of the many adventures to be
enjoyed over the next nine days, including visits to Picadilly Circus, Leicester Square,
Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace (Changing of the Guard), Carnaby
Street, National Gallery, Tower of London, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, St. Paul’s
Cathedral, Tate Modern, and National Portrait Gallery. Shopping, shopping, and more
shopping.
Then off to St. Pancras and the Eurostar to Paris. Home was now the newly-renovated,
Citadines Apart’Hotel Les Halles. From here we got to know Paris well. We visited
Pompidou Centre, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Place St-Michel, Latin Quarter, Père Lachaise
Cemetery to see the gravesites of Frédéric Chopin, Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, and
Annette Giacometti.
We visited Montmartre, Sacré-Coeur, Moulin Rouge and walked the Champs-Élysées,
visited the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, and at night ascended to the
top of the Eiffel Tower with its glittering lights. Next day we were off to the Chateau
de Versailles with all its history and gilded gold. Back to Paris and a visit to the Musée
Rodin, a masterpiece in its own right, and the final evening was spent visiting the site of
Princess Diana’s crash, then onto a cruise on the Seine.
On behalf of Mr. Chetty, Ms. Presutto and me, we wish to thank this group of fine
young people for allowing us to share these experiences with them: experiences which
have enriched our lives and will always be cherished with fondness. In particular, we
want to wish the grade 12 students who were ‘on board’ this trip and who will soon
be graduating, we wish you well and hope that one day you may return to London and
Paris, empowered with your new insights. ‘Cheerio!’ and ‘Bon voyage!’ to you all.
VISUAL ART STUDENTS DRAW INSPIRATION FROM MONTREAL’S SPRING
SNOWSTORM
On April 12th, grade 9 and 10 RAP visual arts students visited
Montreal, Québec to study and discover the city. The excursion
to Montreal was to afford our RAP students the opportunity to be
immersed in this unique French–Canadian culture and respond
to its environment, not as tourists, but as visual art students from
Ontario. This year, the unexpected weather – SNOW! added
another dimension to this experience.
Getting to Montreal was picturesque, with all the snow accumulation, but,
slow upon arrival to the city, students were taken to Redpath Hall located on
the campus of McGill University and set about, recording images preserved
in this fascinating Classically Rendered building. Over the next two days,
many drawings and recordings were completed by this marvelous group of
talented students. Studies from sites like Notre-Dame Cathedral, The Montreal
Museum of Fine Art, and Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys Catholic Church in Old
Montreal were some of the vehicles used by students to hone their skills.
The Studies were of the highest caliber as always and the experience of being
able to study from objects celebrating the French culture unique to Canada as
serious and disciplined Visual Art students is something which allows for the
maturation of these young people.
St. Elizabeth Catholic High School 9
ILLUMINATI
In May, the visual art department held its annual Illuminati Art Show, exhibited in
the York Catholic District School Board Centre for the Arts Theatre. After 25 years of
captivating artwork produced by the art students, this year’s R.A.P and comprehensive
students were accompanied by curious family members to this year’s art show. The
Exhibition was an overwhelming success. The paintings presented in the show were a
reflection of the hard work put forth in the art classes throughout the year. Visitors
were first greeted by an arrangement of light installations created by the talented
grade 12 Rap class. Guests were impressed by the clay work which included vessels and portrait bust composed by the grade 11
R.A.P class . Included in the theatre were beautifully painted landscapes that represented
the suburban community and environment. Alongside those works were acrylic paintings
of vibrant flowers that created a bright focal point. Under the neon lights, the Haida
sculptures added a tribal atmosphere to the theatre. Within the theatre, there was a maze
of drawings and illustrations of portraits and cameras, which added to the fun experience.
Not to be forgotten, the ramp was filled with a wide array of student photography, ranging
from beautiful portraiture to breathtaking landscapes to intricate still life arrangements.
Overall, Illuminati was an achievement in both spectacle and artistic achievement.
Vietnam Visit: A Priestley Presentation
Mrs. M. Young, Canadian and World Studies Department
On June 7th, students from Mrs. Young’s grade 10 history classes proudly
welcomed Fr. Joseph Pham to their class. Fr. Joseph humbly shared his
remarkable personal story of survival and escape from Vietnam and his
courageous journey to Canada as a ‘Boat Person’. In the late 1970s the conflict
in Vietnam not only escalated into neighbouring Cambodia and Laos, but
changed the lifestyles of people of all three countries forever. The new regime
resorted to tactics of intimidation, control, torture, imprisonment, and killing.
As a result, hundreds of thousands of people risked their lives to flee, some
surviving the arduous and dangerous journey making it to foreign shores. Fr. Joseph shared with students how, as a young boy, he
experienced such a journey. He explained how the government killed his father and persecuted his Catholic family. He described his lone
escape from Vietnam at the age of 13, and his dangerous struggle through the jungle to shores where boats were able to, for those willing
to risk their lives, transport them to ‘safety’. Among other things, Fr. Joseph described his survival for two years in a Malaysian refugee
camp and his amazing January arrival to a snow-covered Canada. Though the topic of the ‘Boat People’ was part of the students’ course
work and research, it was an amazing privilege for students to hear this firsthand account of perseverance and hope. Fr. Joseph’s story
became even more interesting to students when he explained how all alone, as a 15-year-old boy with no English whatsoever, attempted
to integrate into a school system and general Canadian society in London, Ontario where the government had designated him to live.
It was inspiring for students to meet someone whose faith in God and will to live helped him arrive to Canada, get a post-secondary
education, become employed and answer his vocational call to the priesthood. Despite his struggle as a child and youth in Vietnam, Fr.
Joseph continues to guide and inspire others with this positivism and love for his fellow man. We thank Fr. Joseph Pham for sharing his
amazing story with us. It was an honour and blessing to listen to his story and we thank him for inspiring us with his devotion, strength
and humility.
ST. E and FAÇADE ACADEMY OF THE ARTS
Ms. M. A. Arista Vallario, FLS Teacher, Special Education Department
May came this year with vibrance and creativity. Thanks to Mina Spremulli at Façade
Academy of the Arts’ generosity, students in our Functional Skills classes were given a
complimentary workshop where they created an exceptional art piece fit for any wall in
their parents’ homes. Our students had a great time and were enthralled in what they
were doing. This therapeutic and hands-on experience, was anxiously anticipated in our
Art Therapy Workshop held on June 21st where the act of drawing and creating art to help relieve
stress, stimulate the brain and exercise fine motor skills along side eye and hand coordination was
a great way to end the school year. Façade Academy is no stranger to St. Elizabeth, mentoring
many of our very own RAP students, special needs students and mainstream current and past
students, providing them with incredible opportunities to enhance their experience as artists
in the art and design industry. Many of these students created set design for the Vaughan Film
Festival, one-of-a-kind art pieces for gallery display, creating collectable art pieces for the Starlight
Children’s Foundation and NHL charity auction and were given recognition and exposure
within the arts and design industries from the media. Mrs. Spremulli has provided
scholarships, awards and helped in preparation of portfolio’s with 100% acceptance
in University/ College in Canada, USA and International placements. In addition, Mrs.
Spremulli provides current St. E. students with internship and volunteer experience,
working and assisting with Façade Academy’s annual events both large and small as well as
providing them with teaching experience, instructing the kinder and beginner arts classes.
We are excited to work with Façade Academy of the Arts next year as we know the benefits
of art and fun that comes with it! If you require further information, please contact
Mina Spremulli at 416-895-3570 or www.facadeacademy.com.
