Theaverage life expectancy of Bangladeshipopulation is 67 years and by 2045-50 the lifeexpectancy at birth in Bangladesh is estimated tobe 75 years. In old age people suffer from multi-systemicdiseases which are mostly chronic in nature. Many of these diseases are very oftenoverlooked by the health professionals. They justallow letting those happen without any dueintervention. Here comes the question of ethicalissue to render the appropriate health careservices towards the aged people and to have theright to receive the same. Inclusion of elderlyhealth care as a new essential element of primaryhealth care program will play a pivotal role inimproving the health of the aged. Communityhealth workers need to be trainedcomprehensively on elderly health care services. Our medical education system should alsoincorporate geriatric medicine in theundergraduate medical curriculum with a greateremphasis. It is also necessary to introducegerontology as subject of specialization at thepost graduate level exactly as it is prevailing inthe developed countriesA system of coordinated care needs to beprovided from home through community totertiary level of health care. And within the systemof care, for better solution, measures should betaken to attend both psychological and emotionalneeds along with the physical problems. It is hightime to think about a long term and sustainableaging policies to face the reality of elderly healthcare needs in Bangladesh.Prof.
