Blues CD Reviews - Brian “The BLuesman” BeachumANTHONY ROSANO & THE CONQUEROOSLive @TEGUSelf-ReleaseThe Blues scene is alive and well in the 757. A good example of that is one of our own, Anthony Rosano & the Conqueroos. This group won the latest session of the Natchel’ Blues Network (NBN) Hampton Roads competition for the 29thInternational Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. They also have a slammin’ EP CD out for your listening pleasure. There areonly five cuts on this release, but they are five strong cuts. The CD was recorded Live at TEGU Studios with band members Anthony Rosano on vocals and guitars, Dion “Suga D” Davis on drums, “Smilin’”Jack Campbell on harps, and Paul Warren on bass. The cuts range from hard-drivin’ blues like “Maureen” and “Going to Texas” to the slow-rollin’ side of “Get Satisfied” with its great harp work by“Smilin’” Jack. Go out and catch these guys around town. Pick up their CD. You’re in for a treat.Blues CD Reviews - Brian “The BLuesman” BeachumAL BASILEAt Home With the Blues/Next Door to the Blues (2-CD Set)Sweet Spot Records 9222www.sweet-spot-records.comAl Basile, the original trumpet player for Duke Robillard’s famous Roomful of Blues band, just released a two-CD set ofblues music that has a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde kinda feel. They are both strong in their own right, but different as well. Justto mention up front, Duke Robillard plays guitar on and produced both CDs.The first disc, At Home With the Blues, is comprised of 13 re-mastered cuts from Al’s 1998-2010 catalog featuring some solid blues and swing bluestracks and one original piece. This alone would qualify as fantastic blues release.Disc two, Next Door to the Blues, has a completely different feel. Al and Duke throw in some funk, some more horns, and a touch more R&B. Oh,my! They also change the line-up on the back-up band. On this CD, you get 13 equally strong cuts that keep the party rolling. This 2-CD combo setis jammed full of terrific blues, jammin’ soul, some sweet R&B, and a touch of some funk. How can you go wrong? You gotta get this one (or two!).Top cut picks: At Home – “Go Back Home To The Blues,” “Termites In The Basement,” “Not The Wrong Woman,” and “Too Slow.” Next Door – “TooMuch Like Fate,” “Keep That Heart,” and “It Is What It Is.”JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 • www.NatchelBlues.org5

Blues CD Reviews - Jack CampbellJOHNNY MASTRO & MAMA’S BOYSLuke’s DreamRip Cat Records RIC 1109www.ripcatrecords.comwww.johnnymastro.comWOW! That’s my first impression with this CD and it lasted through the entirerecording. Where have these guys been all my life? It turns out they’ve beenbusy touring the Southern California blues circuit hot and heavy since 1993. They also tour Europe. Theband has released a total of seven CD’s to date. The band name came from Mama Laura Gross who mentored Johnny as he led her namesake band untilshe left this earth in 2009. She infused her boys with many musical lessons, but the top three were:finding your own sound, keen listening, and the importance of soul in music. Great advice in my humbleopinion. Here is their simple, stripped down line up: Johnny Mastro-vocals & harmonica; Smokehouse Brownguitar, slide guitar, & acoustic guitar; Michael Hightower-bass & acoustic bass; and Jimmy Goodall-drums.Guest artists on Luke’s Dream are Kirk Fletcher (monster guitar player in his own right), Scott Abeya, andLisa Cee.You can hear so many musical influences in their musical style. Let’s see, there’s Muddy Waters and LittleWalter (of course), but listen closer and you’ll hear John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, William Clarke, JJ Cale,Lightnin’ Hopkins, Hound Dog Taylor, and early Led Zeppelin. My favorite cut on this effort is definitely “Tonight We Ride.” It’s got this kind of Gospel music intro andoutro. In between is a Chicago style shuffle that will knock your socks off. “Junker’s Blues” is cool, too.Mastro shows off his Chromatic harmonica skills here. The title cut “Luke’s Dream” is another favorite. It’s a country blues song that sounds like something our friend Seth Stainback would write.Blues isn’t just learningnotes and playing them. You learn notes to play tothe music of your soul.-Katie GreenwoodJANUARY CALENDARWednesday 2The Doc Robin Band - MojoBones (N)Saturday 5Anthony and the Conqueroos- Millions of Beers - (C)Friday 18Soul Serenaders (Billy Price,Tommy Lepson, OriginalNighthawks Rhythm Section, more) - Jewish MotherHilltop (VB)Sunday 20ROAD TO MEMPHISFUNDRAISER CONCERT2pm- Solo/Duo winner-Shawn ‘Dirty’ Strickland3pm- Youth Showcasewinners-Carbon Jam4pm-Band winner-AnthonyRosano & The Conqueroos5pm-2011 Solo/Duo winner-Seth Stainback and Rooster6p-7:30p BLUES JAM********************************BEST OF LUCK!January 28-February 5Anthony Rosano &Conqueroos, Carbon Jam,and Shaw “Dirty” Strickland -International Blues Challenge(Memphis TN)********************************GOT A BLUES GIG?Take a minute to get yourgig listed on the onlinecalendar.www.natchelblues.org/BandGig.htmlJANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 • www.NatchelBlues.org7

Blues CD Reviews - Brian “The BLuesman” BeachumMITCH WOODS WITH THE ROCKET 88sBeyond Blues Borders: Live in IstanbulClub 88 Records 8812www.mitchwoods.comWhen you think about great live boogie, jump blues, swing, and New OrleansR&B, you don’t usually think of Turkey. Now that’s not Thanksgiving turkey. That’s Turkey, as in the country. Well, apparently, Turkey loves the blues. There isa country-wide blues tour called the Efes Blues Festival, Turkey’s longest runningfestival, which tours the country, covering 20 cities throughout Turkey in a 5-week time frame. The 2010festival was when this incredible CD/DVD combo set was recorded. On the CD, Mitch Woods brings a great collection of originals and blues standards that cover the aforementionedspectrum of musical venues. It’s 68 minutes of the top-line Boogie Woogie, Jump, Swing, andmore! You gotta watch what you have on your feet and where you are when you put this baby in theplayer, ‘cause you’re not gonna wanna sit still on this one!Top cuts were hard to pick on this one. They’re all great! You can just put this in, hit play, and let theparty begin! I love “Solid Gold Cadillac,” “Rocket 88,” and the Willie Dixon/Eddie Boyd classic “ThirdDegree.” The DVD that comes in this combo has great video of the performances, band bios and somecool “extras.”Highly recommended for the blues collection or gift giving!Blues CD Reviews - Brian “The BLuesman” BeachumTERESA JAMES & THE RHYTHM TRAMPSCome On HomeJesi-Lu Records JESILU 10080Teresa James, with her band, the Rhythm Tramps, jumps out with this new CDrelease that is solid and tight. Teresa is originally Houston, TX based, but movedout to LA to put her band together. The ensemble consists of Teresa on piano andlead vocals, Billy Watts on mean guitars, Mike Finnigan playing B3 organ, TerryWilson handles bass and extra guitar work, Jim Christie on drums, Jerry Petersen on saxophones andLee Thornberg on trombone and trumpet. Teresa’s vocals are hot, stimulating, and sensual. Her range ofdelivery is engaging. The twelve cuts on the CD are all band originals except for two. They range from Texas blues, heavy hornpieces, some Motown, throw in some gospel, stir in a bit of funk and you have some mighty fine bluesstew. Back it up with some great side dishes, including the Etta James classic “If I Can’t Have You,” whereTeresa shares vocals with Mike Finnigan. The CD starts out with a great cut and the title cut, “Come on Home to Me.” Other top picks of mine are“A Long Way From Texas,” “She’s Got A Way With Men,” and “Carry That Burden,” with some killer slideguitar. The band is tight, horns are hot, and Teresa’s vocals bring this one all together.
