Position DefinitionThe initial step for the Special Nominating Committee in the searchprocess was to craft and approve a detailed position description forcirculation throughout our denomination. Given the transformativenature of our Presbytery, the Search Committee was compelled toevaluate candidates both on how they fit the position description andhow their mission, experience and gifts would integrate with those ofthe Presbytery. Most importantly, the Search Committee wrestledwith the question of how the next Associate Pastor would relate tothe medium sized congregations they would serve. To that end, weconsidered the following:Mission- Does the candidate understand and embrace the mission ofPittsburgh Presbytery to serve congregations?- Has the candidate participated in leading a transformativeministry?- Has the candidate participated in creating communities ofcongregations to work together fulfilling the mission that Godgives in Christ?Experience- Has the candidate had pastoral experience with medium sizedcongregations?- Does the candidate understand the context and culture of thePresbyterian church in southwestern Pennsylvania?- Has the candidate been the head of staff pastor?- Has the candidate reported to a head of staff pastor?- Has the candidate intimately dealt with resolving conflict?Gifts- Leadership- Administration- Relationship BuildingQualifications of Rev. Dr. Douglas E. PortzDoug Portz has served in a pastoral role to four congregations inthree presbyteries. During his service to the local congregations, hehas been involved with service to the larger church through multipleassignments to Presbytery level committees and commissions. Anoverview of his service follows:Experience- 23 years of serving congregations in ordained ministry- Served in Pittsburgh Presbytery, Presbytery of Western NewYork, and Albany Presbytery- Pastoral experience coupled with significant service to the Bodythrough various roles including Moderator - Committee onMinistry, Commissioner to the 210 th General Assembly, andChair of Council (W. NY Presbytery).Education- Doctor of Ministry, McCormick Theological Seminary- Master of Divinity, Princeton Theological Seminary- Participated and/or led various continuing educationworkshops/activities/programs at both the congregational leveland the Presbytery level.Attributes- Passionate faith in Jesus Christ- Collegial and collaborative leadership style- Disciplined devotional life- Organized and process orientedFamily- Married to Lynn for 28 years. Lynn is the Pastor at St. AndrewsPresbyterian Church- Son, Ben, who is freshman at Westminster College.- Daughter, Beth, who is a junior at Grove City College.
