Handmade shotguns witha manmade reputationHolloway & Naughton® was established in 1909 in what was to becomeBirmingham’s famous gun making quarter, although until their reputation wasestablished, the quality of craftsmanship they achieved was very much confinedto the leading makers of London.Holloway & Naughton® retained their enviablereputation amongst discerning shots until well intothe Fifties, when only a limited number of guns werebeing made, but their extremely high quality remainedundisputed.The situation remained unchanged until 1992, whenAndrew Harvison, already a name to be reckonedwith in the world of competition shooting, and theholder of many prestigious championship titles, madethe life-changing decision to redevelop Holloway &Naughton® , adding his renowned knowledge ofguns and shooting to the depth of heritage that thecompany had established over the years.Shortly to become the owner of Holloway &Naughton®, Harvison’s new guns would be aproduct of his commitment to being the best. The making of a masterpieceWhilst each component of a truly bespoke gun is carefully crafted to a client’sfit, specification, and taste, the finished piece is frequently inspired by ourgallery. Before serious decisions are made we spend valuable time taking theclient through the gallery, where they will see and handle virtually all the optionsopen to them before the first critical fitting.Breaking newgroundMore often than not, that involves making a trialstock, and observing the client shooting beforefinal stocking.Moving on to the modern Holloway & Naughtonsidelock over and under action, designed for itsrobust, yet finely-tuned reliability, clients then havethe choice of calibres in 12,16, 20, 28 or .410Barrel length; weight; balance; rib style; stockconfiguration, grip shape and engraving designs arechoices available.It’s vital to each craftsman involved in the making of agun that he fully understands the client’s requirements,and fulfils them to the very best of his remarkableability. Precision engineeringSurely few pieces of art and craftsmanship can match the diverse skills thatcome together as a fine, handmade English shotgun?Andrew Harvison’s belief in this is total, and beginswith his almost religious passion for ‘gun fit’. ToAndrew, fit is all, and the client is left in no doubtof this whatsoever. Seemingly endless measurementsare taken, to establish the stock geometry. The man behind the gunAndrew Harvison, who is solely responsible for the resurrection of theHolloway & Naughton name, is something of an enigma - even in the rarifiedworld of guns and gun making.Andrew with the originalHolloway & Naughton®prototype in 1992.As a world class competitor, coach and gun fitter,with many prestigious trophies and National awardsto endorse it, he has the unique ability to be closerto his clients’ aspirations than almost anyone else inthe business.More than any others you’re likely to meet in theplaces where shooters inevitably voice opinions,his are backed by hands on experience and skills thatare directly applied to his gun making philosophy.Andrew’s extensive shooting and coaching historyhas seen him on regular and lengthy visits to the USA,and contributing numerous magazine articles on bothsides of the Atlantic. It’s this unique history that hasplayed such a major role in the renaissance of one ofEngland’s most respected gun makers.He is now challenging the English gun makingestablishment by adding his undisputed experienceand skill to the heritage of Holloway& Naughton- a formidable formula that’s even being talked aboutin the normally hushed gun galleries of London,England.In many ways, the serious stage of Andrew’s shootinghistory began with the ownership of his first shootingground in 1967, followed by a seventeen yearperiod developing two of the foremost commercialshooting centres in the UK, which hosted manyRegional and National Championship shoots atall major disciplines. Similar involvement with othershooting grounds, and employment within the guntrade, added even deeper insight into the ‘hands oncraft’ of actually making English shotguns. He hadalready become an acclaimed gun fitter and stockdesigner, but where to then in his relentless pursuitof perfection?Already well known in shooting circles, he hadrepresented his country for nearly twenty yearsat Sporting, and Skeet and Trap. He had alsocaptained the England skeet team and collecteda host of shooting honours along the way, includingthe British Open Sporting Championship and theEnglish Skeet title on two consecutive occasions.What follows is fast becoming one of shooting’s mosttalked about gun making stories.Andrew identified the unique opportunity ofresurrecting the name of one of England’s mostrespected gun makers when he released his firstpre-production gun under the Holloway & Naughtonbanner in the 1990’s - his unbelievably high qualityside lock over and under won the Best NewGun Award of 2006 from the shooting sportsindustry.
