what are your child care options? >>There are so many different types of child care it can at times be confusing. The following information canhelp you to decide which type of care best meets your needs and those of your child/family.1. licensed child care services >>In Queensland child care services are licensed and monitored by the Department of Communities under theChild Care Act 2002 and Child Care Regulations 2003.Licensed child care services are required by the child care legislation to meet minimum quality standards inareas such as:>> Qualifications of staff and care-providers>> Policies and procedures>> Number of staff required to care for children>> Maximum group sizes>> Activities and experiences>> Equipment>> Health and safety of children>> Facilities and space>> Information for parents and guardiansChild care services that are licensed in Queensland are either centre based child care or home based child care.childcare options >> 1

1.1 centre based child care servicesCentre based child care services provide care and education for children from birth to school age. There aredifferent types of centre based child care.Long day care centres are usually open Monday to Friday between 6 am and 6 pm for at least 48 weeks of theyear. Long day care centres may offer care from birth through to school age.Pre prep/Kindergarten centres generally provide care and education for children from three and a half yearsto school age and have limited hours.Occasional care centres are usually open Monday to Friday, have more limited hours than long day carecentres and offer care to children on an occasional basis.School age care services offer care for school age children before and after school and during schoolvacations.1.2 home based child care servicesA home based child care service provides care for a small group of children in a home environment.Family day care services are individual carers caring for children in their own home under the assessment andsupport of a family day care scheme. The family day care scheme is a licensed child care service.2 >> childcare options

2. non licensed child care services >>There are a number of other child care services that may be available but are not required to be licensed. Some of these are regulated by the Child Care Act 2002.Vacation care (not attached to a licensed school age care service).Stand alone care (care being provided in a home environment but not attached to a licensed family day carescheme).Adjunct care (care provided for a short time period and normally attached to an organisation such as a fitnesscentre or shopping centre).Children’s activity services (care provided for a short time period where a specific activity or skill is beingundertaken or taught).Nannies and babysitters (Individuals employed directly by the parent or guardian as a carer)Resort care (a service, conducted by a hotel or resort, to provide child care to children who are short termguests).childcare options >> 3

what is child care benefit (ccb)? >>Child Care Benefit reduces the cost of your total child care fees. It is available to you if you are a parent, fosterparent or grandparent with a child in your care who is attending a child care service approved by, or registeredwith, the Government. There are certain eligibility requirements you must meet in order to receive the ChildCare Benefit. (Information directly sourced from the Australian Government website mychild.gov.au)For more information on CCB contact the Child Care Access Hotline on 1800 670 305, or the Family AssistanceOffice on 13 61 50. You can also access information on the Family Assistance website atwww.familyassist.gov.au and www.mychild.gov.au.4 >> childcare options

how can you choose quality child care? >>We live in a diverse, multicultural society. Every family will have its own ideals and values for its children justas every child care service will have its own unique qualities. A service that meets the needs of one familymay not suit another.here is a guide to help you choose a children’s service that suits you & your child >>1. when do you need care for your child? The hours of care that you require may help determine which service will best suit your needs. For example, ifyou only require a few hours of care each week occasional care may suit you but if you work full time you mayrequire the longer hours provided by long day care centres and family day care. Check the operating hours ofthe services in your area.2. how old is your child?Your choice of care will also be determined by the age of your child. Some services are not licensed for babies(children under two years of age) and some services have a licence only for children who are over three yearsold. Check your local services for the age group for which they provide care.3. quality issuesNow you have discovered which services in your area could provide a program for your child during the hoursyou require it’s time to consider the individual qualities of the services available. All services will allow you tovisit them so you can see what is being provided.childcare options >> 5

A quality child care service should offer children:>> Nurturing and enjoyable adult company>> Opportunities to play with other children>> An active learning environment in which children are encouraged to follow their interests, play, explore andlearn>> Times and places to be quiet, relax, rest or be alone>> Freedom and support to express feelings appropriately, for example, to be happy ,irritated, satisfied, frustrated, energetic or tired>> Clear and reasonable expectations of behaviour that is respectful of other.(Information sourced from www.education.qld.gov.au/earlychildhood/pdfs/tip-sheets/tip-sheet-choosingquality-service.pdf)how many children will be cared for by one carer? The carer to child ratio and the maximum size of groups of children vary depending on the type of child careservice and the age of the children. More information on requirements can be found by contacting the ChildCare Information Service on 1800 637 711 or email ccis@communities.qld.gov.au and/or viewwww.mychild.gov.auGenerally, in long day care centres and occasional care centres, for children under 2 years old there mustbe one carer per 4 children with a maximum of 8 children in the group. This ratio increases to one carer per13 children with a maximum of 25 children in the group for children aged 4-6 years old. For school age careservices there must be one carer per 12 children with no maximum group size prescribed. Family day carecarers can care for up to 7 children at any one time with only four of these to be under 6 years old.6 >> childcare options

how will my child spend the day?The early years of a child’s life provide a foundation for later learning, so child care services have a criticalrole to play in supporting and promoting children’s development. Legislation states that child care servicesmust provide a balance of activities and learning experiences for children, including a balance of indoor andoutdoor, individual and group activities. Get to know the staff, talk regularly with them about what they aredoing and why, what is happening with your child, and any concerns or issues you might have.what if i have concerns?Treat your child care arrangements as a partnership. Maintaining open and regular communication with staffshould make it easier to raise any concerns you may have. Giving constructive feedback allows services tobuild on the quality of care they are providing. If you have concerns about the quality of care, hygiene orsafety issues please contact your nearest Office of Early Childhood Education and Care on 4799 7110.childcare options >> 7
