Next gearThis past season, the first for POC on the bike scene has been amazing. The response we´ve had fromthe market has been great. We have had our gear tested by some of the most influential international DH,Free ride and BMX athletes, as well as by riders at all other levels. Whatever hasn´t been perfect has beenrevised for this coming season. At POC´s R&D department the focus has not only been on implementing the improvements, there hasalso been a strong focus on rotational violence. Rotational violence to the head is the next area of focusin our quest for better head protection. Since a few years back POC has established contact and collaborationwith MIPS; a company with many years of heavy research on the subject. It shows that therotational violence as a consequence of the friction between the shell of a helmet and the ground, createssevere damage to the brain as it tugs inside the skull. We are therefore very proud to present the first bikehelmet equipped with the MIPS anti rotational violence system – the Cortex downhill MIPS helmet. In addition, there is a bunch of new gear; goggles, gloves and protection. We hope you´ll like the gear!Regards,a very committed POC team4 5

We love the sport but hatewhen people get hurtPOC is a young swedish company built on a strong mission; to do everything we can to possiblysave lives and to reduce consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes, by developing andrenewing what personal protection is all about.POC has in many ways, with three season in the ski business behind us, already set a new standardwhen it comes to technical solutions, construction, material combinations, engineering and ergonomicswith patent pending solutions, to increase the degree of protection.POC works in a cross disciplinary way. The organization involves competences from differentfields, such as engineers, material specialists, industrial and graphic designers, neurologists andspecialists in spinal cord injuries. POC is based in Stockholm which is an important center for someof Europe´s leading research and development experts in the areas of safety, medicine, health care, advanced product development and testing. When developing a product at POC, we do it in the spirit of doing the best. When it comes tosafety, quality and performance, we never compromise when choosing a construction or material.Even if it would mean cheaper products or increased margins.6 7

poC labThe missionM.i.p.s.safety insidepoC laB is our scientific forum. it bringstogether experts who provide us withinvaluable assistance in ensuring that wedevelop the most relevant, reliable andadvanced protective products on themarket today. The poC lab enables aclose and rewarding collaboration withsome of the world’s foremost sportsmedicine experts, brain scientists andspecialists in spinal cord injuries.as a CoMpleMenT to the poC lab,we also seek help from materialstechnologists – and from people suchas you who make avid use of our protectivegear in practice, ranging fromproficient X-game riders to the elite atthe World Cup level.Developed in cooperation with Royal Institute of Technology and Karolinska Institute, SwedenneW Mips TeChnology mimics one of the safety systems which already exist in the human head. When the head issubjected to an oblique impact, the brain can slide along a membrane on the inner surface of the skull, which reducesthe forces transmitted to the brain. This protective feature has, with Mips technology, been incorporated into the helmet.in a helmet with Mips technology the shell and the liner are separated by a low friction layer. When a helmet with Mipstechnology is subjected to an oblique impact, the low friction layer allows a small rotation of the shell relative to the liner.experimental tests have shown a significant reduction of the forces to the brain. Find more information about the tests atwww.mipshelmet.seaCCiDenT sTaTisTiCs show that the most common accident occurs in an oblique impact to the head, resulting in a rotationof the head and brain. The BRain is more sensitive to oblique impacts than radial impacts. however, the helmets are dropped vertically onto theimpact surface, according to the helmet test regulations, resulting in a radial force to the head. This is why helmets todayhave good protective properties for vertical impacts while the protection is not optimized for oblique impacts. Mips aBhas therefore developed Mips technology to provide substantially increased protection against oblique impacts.MeMBeRs oF The poC lab are carefullyselected for their unique expertise.each member shares poC’s missionto save lives and reduce the severityof injuries resulting from accidents.Deformation of the brain from an oblique impact when the rider is wearing a conventional helmetand a helmet with MIPS technology.Load transmitted to the brainHigh Medium LowMembers ofPOC LabClaes hulTingM.D ph.D. heaDaboutheadWhen enTeRing The Bike sCene, we have made use of theexperiences learned from our short but successful history inmaking revolutionizing ski helmets. The concepts that wehave developed for ski helmets has been taken further andoptimized to reach up to and beyond the demands oftoday’s bike users in the Downhill mountain bike, Dirt, Freerideand BMX disciplines. The aim has been to providebetter head protection than ever before.helmet with a thick outer shell, covering a shock absorbingliner of multi-impact epp. The hard shell helmet providesgood protection against penetration and makes a durableconstruction. But, the nature of the stiff outer shell alsohas drawbacks. on impact, the hard shell causes an abruptstop of the head. This increases the risk of brain injuries. The hard shell may also bounce on the ground and therebyincrease the risk of whiplash injuries. The concepts that we have developedfor ski helmets has been taken furtherand optimized to reach up to and beyondthe demands of today’s bike users in theDownhill Mountain Bike, Dirt, Freerideand BMX disciplines.noRMally, BoTh The traditional hard shell and in-moldhelmets rely on expanded polystyrene (eps) for the shockabsorption. eps absorbs energy by plastic deformation, meaning it is deformed permanently upon impact. Therefore, a helmet liner made of eps will not be good atabsorbing repetitive shocks. The saFeTy ReQuiReMenTs for ski and bike helmets aresimilar but bike helmets call for some additional requirementswhen it comes to ventilation and comfort. a bikehelmet should have full ventilation to let fresh air flow intothe helmet as well as letting excess heat and moisture out.The challenge with ventilation is that open vents in thehelmet leaves the user unprotected from sharp objects thatmay penetrate the vents. This is a serious risk, especiallyfor Downhill riders since they are likely to be exposed tobranches, sharp rocks and other hazardous objects in a crash. To oveRCoMe The Challenge of providing penetrationresistance, excellent ventilation and impact protectionproperties, we developed our patented concept withdouble overlapping shells (vDsap).MosT oF poC’s Bike helMeTs use a liner of epp instead ofthe traditional eps. The difference between the materials isthat epp, unlike eps, does not deform permanently onimpact and is therefore suitable to absorb repetitive shocks.FoR This season, poC is also adding the patented Mipstechnology to our collection of innovations, aiming for saferhelmets. Mips is a system used to reduce the rotationalforces on the brain in the case of oblique impacts. This isachieved by allowing a controlled rotation of the shell relativeto the liner. We are proud to present this unique and necessarysystem in a bike helmet. The seConD Type oF TRaDiTional bike helmet is the“in-mold” type. These helmets have a thin shell of polycarbonatemolded together with an eps liner. The impact energyis very well absorbed with this construction as the thin shellallows the helmet to deconstruct on impact, creating lowerenergy levels for the brain to deal with and minimal bounce. The disadvantages are poor resistance to penetration and aless durable construction.ouR eFFoRT To CoMBine the strengths of these two majorconcepts in ski helmets led to our patent pending “aramidballistic penetration barrier”: apB. By adding a layer ofpenetration-resistant aramid between the shell and the liner, the shell thickness could be reduced, leading to weightreduction and better energy absorption.TRansFeRRing The apB concept into a fully ventilatedsystem for bike users led to our revolutionary, patentedventilated-Double-shell-anti-penetration: vDsap. This ConsTRuCTion Was initially developed for theReceptor + all season helmet. a helmet certifi ed in europeand the us for: biking, skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, and water sports. When developing the Cortex Dh full facedownhill helmet, it was an obvious choice to use the vDsapconcept.vDsap has TWo venTilaTeD shells, placed offset, formaximum penetration resistance and channels in betweenthe shells to ventilate heat, moisture, or water. The inner shellis an extremely thin layer of polycarbonate while the outershell is made of carbon fiber or injected plastic dependingon model. The properties are amazing and these helmetsrepresent a unique way of thinking in helmet design.POC´s double shell helmetsTRaDiTionally, TheRe have been two different types of bikehelmets on the market. First, there is the traditional hard shell1415

BodyAboutBetter bodyprotectionIn our work together with specialists on spinal injuries, riders of all kinds and experts in materials and construction,we have come to the conclusion that many of the protectors on the market have serious weaknesses. The challenge is to come up with a flexible, comfortable protection that really does the job! Many back protectors outthere are lightweight, but less good when it comes to shock absorption and really protecting your spinal area. The experienceand knowledge we have gained from working with body armor for skiing can now be implemented into our bike products andwe are very glad to present two different concepts of back protection, both as a result of different needs of riders and state ofthe art materials and constructions. Our new VPD protector works prog ressively, adapts itself to the force of the impact and isthe most flexible back protector out there.Visco-Elastic Polymer Doughpoc uses a new compound and technology for our mostshock-absorbing back protector called VPD (Visco-ElasticPolymer Dough). This protector is one of few on the marketthat reaches the highest standard (Level 2 “High performance”)of the CE 1621-2 motorcycle standard.the material is highly dampening, using a modifiedpolyurethane foam that is soft, comfortable and adapts tocreate an individual fit for every user. However, when exposedto impact, the material stiffens and has an extreme absorptionof energy. Most of the protector systems available on themarket have a relatively static impact absorption curve andare designed to just pass the specific CE-Norm test. However, this means that low energy impacts are transferredalmost directly to the body. Our VPD back protector functionsprogressively and adapts itself to the force of the impact.to further improve properties, the back protector usesa dual density combination with extra protection covering thespinal area. This way we maximize both the freedom of movementand the shock absorbing characteristic of the protection.Multi impact hard shell systemto maximize energy absorption POC’s back armorwith hard panel shields has a layer of multi impact EPP.Unlike many other back protectors, EPP also withstandsmulti-impact without losing the energy absorbing abilities. The hard shield protector also has a height adjustable waistbandsystem for the best personal fit.An individual systemwe have a flexible patented back protection systemwhich allows you to choose your degree of protection fromvarious components, at all times. This means you can tailorthe degree of protection, depending on how you ride for theday or to meet different rules and restrictions applying to thecompetition you enter. With POC Back Protection Systemyou can be sure to gain protection for the upper part of thespine, including vertebrae C1 – C7, as well as the lowest partincluding the caudal area. The uppermost part of the spine– the vertebrae C1 – C7, is the most important region toprotect as damages here may result in serious irreparableinjury or even death.the armor is not only designed to give you the highestpossible level of protection when riding. We have also doneeverything we can to make the armor as comfortable to wearas possible. You will feel how the protection anatomically andergonomically follows the shape of your back. At the sametime, the protec tion is supple, giving you complete freedomof movement. Another major advantage of the POC armor isthe highly efficient ventilation technology.to sum it all up, POC’s back protection will give youunsurpassed levels of comfort and safety. Looking at ourrange we hope that you will find a product for your personalneed, regardless of how you like to ride, whether it be DHracing or pulling back flips in the park.20 21
