A generation of innovation at risk.

Year after year, the United States slips further

behind its international competitors in science,

technology and innovation. The causes vary.

Student interest and proficiency in science,

technology, engineering and mathematics

(STEM) fields are declining. Meanwhile, our pool

of STEM graduates continues to shrink despite

increasing workforce demand.

According to the Business Higher-Education

Forum, only 16% of American students are

proficient in math and interested in a STEM

career by the 12th grade. 2 Additionally, only

about half of STEM college graduates pursue

STEM-related careers upon graduation. 3

The resulting labor shortages now threaten

to compromise the nation’s global standing.

Since 2005, Raytheon has invested $60 million

in STEM initiatives through MathMovesU ® ,

the company’s flagship STEM program.

From virtual thrill rides, scholarships and

sponsorships to special events, interactive

experiences and national competitions,

MathMovesU ® engages students with

rich, dynamic content. It inspires them

to see math and science in a whole new

light, then supports them throughout

their academic careers as they set out to

strengthen our nation’s role as a global

innovation leader.

Composed of an ever-expanding family

of unique initiatives and key partnerships,

the program takes a holistic approach

to addressing the nation’s STEM

crisis. Connecting with students from

elementary school through college,

supporting educators and policymakers,

promoting racial and gender equality —

it’s all part of making a meaningful,

long-term impact that empowers

students to succeed.

Inspiring students.

When students plug in a guitar, ride

a skateboard or play a video game,

they’re having fun with math and

science — they just don’t know it.

By helping them make the connection,

MathMovesU ® inspires students to

create a new, lifelong relationship with

math and science, one that opens up

a world of career possibilities.

Several program components focus

on creating that initial spark, whether

through a national rocket-building

competition, a virtual thrill ride or

hands-on activities with professional

engineers. Scholarships, mentoring

programs and a host of other corporate

initiatives allow us to keep the spark

Girls and minority students continue to

face profound cultural and economic

barriers that prevent them from pursuing

STEM-related careers. In fact, women

hold only 20% of Bachelor’s degrees

in physics, engineering and computer

science. 1 Furthermore, minority students

hold only 17.7% of Bachelor’s degrees in

science and engineering. 2

Raytheon’s MathMovesU ® program takes

aim at these disparities with initiatives

designed to empower girls and minority

students — and strengthen the STEM

workforce. From STEM adventure camps

designed for young girls to scholarships

that give women and underrepresented

minorities critical financial support,

Raytheon continues to deliver STEM

solutions that promote diversity.

Raytheon’s Math Heroes awards

program recognizes teachers and

tutors who possess a true passion for

math — and inspire that same passion

in their students. Anyone can submit

a nomination. But only those wholly

dedicated to improving math education

and encouraging student participation

in STEM programs can earn the

coveted award: a $2,500 individual

grant, as well as an additional $2,500

grant for their school or math-related

non-profit program.

camp Reach at Worcester

Polytechnic Institute.

Since 1997, Raytheon volunteers have

provided career guidance and mentorship

to 7th grade girls through Camp Reach

at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Every

year, the girls compete in multiple events

and hands-on activities that culminate in a

community design project requiring them

to implement the engineering design process.

A success year after year, the program has

received the Presidential Award for

Excellence in Science, Mathematics and

Engineering Mentoring.

Systems and Science)

Adventures camp.

Since 2006, Raytheon has partnered

with the University of Arizona and the

Sonora Environmental Research Institute

to support the MISS Adventures Camp

in Arizona. Every summer, 50-60 Raytheon

volunteers work with middle school girls

on STEM learning activities that cover a

variety of topics, including aviation, CSI

and scientific experimentation. Each learning

module is designed to nurture the girls’

interest in math and science.

Program.

The Raytheon Scholars Fund, a partial

endowment of The Citadel military

college, supports scholarships for

women and minorities in the

engineering and science fields. The

first four beneficiaries each received

$5,000 to help offset tuition costs.

dos Pueblos Engineering

Academy.

Raytheon has supported the Dos

Pueblos Engineering Academy since

its inception in 2002. In addition

to providing financial support and

continued volunteerism, Raytheon

helped fund the construction of

the Academy’s Elings Center for

Engineering Education. The 12,000

square-foot center will house the

Raytheon Electrical Engineering

Laboratory.

Raytheon’s financial support will allow the dos

Pueblos Academy to triple its enrollment from 128

to 400 students annually over the next 3 years.

Scholarship Program.

Raytheon’s commitment to Tuskegee

University in Alabama helps the

institution attract high-potential

campus academic mentoring program

from STEM fields with underserved

middle and high school students in

Lawrence, Massachusetts. By inviting

exposes them to a world they may not

experience otherwise — and gives

them a true sense of where math

and science can lead them.

Engineering Festival.

On October 21, 2010, Raytheon

sponsored the country’s first USA

Science & Engineering Festival on

the National Mall. With over 75

performances and over 1,500 hands-on

activities, the festival helped reinvigorate

student interest in STEM careers. At

Raytheon’s exhibit, more than 5,000

students learned about a variety of

physics principles as they worked with

professional engineers to build and test

rubber band-powered racecars.

National Engineers Week.

In partnership with the National

Engineers Week Foundation, Raytheon

continues to celebrate and promote

National Engineers Week. The event

showcases innovations and technological

advancements, highlights engineering

achievements and provides an e-forum

Questacon.

Raytheon’s ongoing partnership with

Questacon, Australia’s National Science

and Technology Centre, is representative

of the company’s global commitment

to STEM education. The partnership

has supported “Imagination Factory,”

a hands-on exhibition telling the

systems integration story of how things

work together in innovative ways. The

exhibition was first opened in Canberra

in late 2007 and has attracted the

volunteer efforts of Raytheon employees.

Ensuring access to

StEM resources.

Through Raytheon’s support, Questacon

has created a state-of-the-art digital studio

to deliver interactive science programs

to schools across Australia using video

conferencing. As more schools become

equipped with suitable technology, the

digital studio will bring high quality science

content to greater numbers of students and

teachers alike. The studio also strengthens

international links by making it possible

for students to experience scientific events

from around the globe.

Science Show.

To help kids better connect with math

and science, Raytheon sponsors the

Professor Bonkers Science Show. This

traveling “laboratory” lets students

explore the world of science through

or at home. Touring schools in the

Broughton, Glenrothes and Harlow

areas of the United kingdom, the

science show provides an informal

setting designed to inspire the next

generation of math and science

Raytheon has developed a

partnership with the Museum of

Science, Boston and Injaz ® , a member

of Junior Achievement Worldwide

operating in twelve countries

throughout the Middle East and

northern Africa. The partnership

extends STEM education initiatives

Elementary ® program, which fosters

engineering and technological literacy
