I chose this topic as over the last two weeks we have been invesganginappropriate use of Facebook, Youtube and mobile phones by some of our students. What has come outof all this is that many of our students are not fully considering the serious implicaons of theirinappropriate use of social media. The following rules will assist all students and families to ensure their digital footprint is one which willhold up to any scruny. The number one rule is nothing is private.Any material that is put out into the electronic media is public property which can be traced back toan individual.Your digital footprint stays with you for life.In all social media interacons, don’t speak or write without thinking first. Think about how theother person will react, whether you could use beer words or ming, and always follow the rulethat face to face is always best.Don’t use rude or vulgar words. Even if they don’t offend the other person, you are usinginappropriate language that can be traced directly to your name.Don’t say anything about anyone else that you wouldn’t like that person to hear. In fact, rememberthe old advice, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”.I encourage all families to think about the above rules and to discuss these maers openly. As parentsyou have a right to regularly view the Facebook posngs and online identy of your children. While thereis a degree of online equee that students are aware of it is easy for conversaons to get out of controland transgress the boundary to inappropriate. By checking the online status of your child regularly youhave a greater understanding of their online world. Students need this accountability in their social medialives.Brian KennellyPrincipal
