Attention Car Number HoldersPast, present and future... What you need to know!Your car number is like a license plate - - one per carfor our Rocky Mountain and Alpine Mountain regions(RMR/AMR) challenge series driving events. You cannotuse your car number on more than one car duringthe driving event season. Next year you can transferyour car number from one car to another. You canalso change your car number before your FIRST drivingevent for the season. Let’s not hog numbers; ifyou have no intention of using your car number, please let me know. Requests for car numbers for the2002 driving season are now being received. Newmembers/drivers, if you have a ‘favorite’ car number, please contact me to see if it is available, otherwise Iwill assign a number to you atyour first driving event with us,which will be your car numberfor the remainder of this season. In order to keep car numbersfrom getting stale, yourparticipation in at least one ofour Challenge Series (CS)driving events (RMR/AMRautocross or track driving) everyNorma Nadatwo years is required to retain your car number. When a car number becomes stale from lack ofuse (2000,2001 seasons), the number becomesavailable in 2002 to the first person requesting thatnumber. (Feb 3, 2002) -Nearly every team will admit thatspeed does not win the Rolex 24 AtDaytona. Over the years it seemed asthough winning the pole position wasalmost a curse for a team. "Durabilityand speed are usually almost inverselyrelated," team owner Kevin Doran confessedafter Didier Theys captured thepole for the 40th anniversary of theRolex 24 At Daytona in the Doran Listabecame only the sixth car in history tocapture the Rolex 24's checkered flagfrom the pole position. The Racer's Group seemed too dominatethe GT class for most of the 24hours, with its #66 and #68 PorscheGT3 Rs both running in the top threefor several hours. Eventually troublefound the team's #68 entry, but the #66Porsche of team owner Kevin Buckler,Michael Schrom, Timo Bernhard andJoorg Bergmeister soldiered on to capturethe class victory and seventh-placefinish overall.EXERPT FROMTHE GRAND AMERICAN ROAD RACING ASSOCIATIONWEB SITE.Night time pitstop for #66 of the 3 car team of the Racers Group. Zone 9 MeetingPresidents and Editors MeetingPhoto from AMR files. The annual Zone 9 meeting was conductedthis year in Albuquerque, NM, on Feb2, chaired by Kathy Fricke, our Zone 9Representative to PCA. This was anopportunity for the regions to interact andto coordinate activities during the comingyear. Since Bill Espinola was unable toattend due to a business conflict, I representedAMR in hisplace. As always, itwas a great opportunityto see old friends andmake new ones. Kathyopened by noting thatJim McDonaldZone 9 experienced 3%growth over the pastyear, making us the fastest growing zonein PCA.A major order of business was areview of each region's calendars, so thatwe will all know what activities eachregion is planning for the year. Someexciting events are coming up, such asRoad Runner's Fiesta del Sol in May, aClub Race and Drivers' Education (DE)event in Las Vegas in May hosted byIntermountain Region, Rocky Mountain'sSpring Tour in March and Concoursd'Elegance in June, and Carrera Region'sOctober Festival in El Paso and DE atArroyo Seco raceway in November, toname just a few. Of course, we are hostingseveral significant events, includingtwo DE events, two autocrosses, our FallTour, monthly mini-tours, and much more(check out our Events Calendar here inMountain Passages).Several guest speakers from PCANational also addressed the group, providingvaluable information about the clubfrom the national perspective.MikeLommatzsch, the National AwardsCommittee Chair, spoke on variousawards that are given to a PCA Regioneach year to recognize service to the cluband the community. Awards include theEnthusiast of the Year and Family of theYear awards, the Region of the Yearaward, and the PCA Service Awards, asseries of awards given for service to thelocal community and/or charitable organizations.Mike noted that it was simple forregions to submit for these awards, andhe encouraged all present to do so. Judy10Hendrickson, National Membership Chair, followed with adiscussion of membership and gave tips for retaining it.And finally Monte Smith, National Treasurer, discussedupcoming changes within PCA. The official PCA positionis that the new Cayenne SUV is fully welcome in theclub, so we can expect to see a very different look tosome cars participating in future events. He noted thatPCA is composed of 141regions divided into 13 Zones.AMR is part of Zone 9, encompassing7 regions:Rocky Mountain, AlpineMountain, Road Runner, LlanoEstacado, West Texas,Carrera, and Intermountain.Gear BoxHeadquarters901/904/911915/930/G-50torque-biasinglimited slips7191 ArapahoeBoulder, CO 80303USA(303) 443-1343(303) 444-3715 faxemail tomconway@carquip.comRacing Gear Ratios•356 - 14 Ratios with new dogs ......................................Call.•911 ‘65-’71 (901) - 22 Ratios w/ new dogs ....................Call.•911 ‘72-’86 (915) - 59 Ratios w/ new dogs ....................Call.•930 ‘75-’88 - 39 Ratios w/ new dogs..............................Call.•G-50/C-2/C-4 ‘87-’94 77 Ratios w/ new dogs ......................Call.•904 Mainshafts NEW (300 m) ......................................$795.Limited Slip Differentials•915 / 930 GT (ZF style) 72-87/911 NEW ................$1795.•904 / 911 ‘65-’68 Torque-Biasing..............................$1495.•915/930 ‘69-’87 Torque-Biasing................................$1495.•G-50 ‘88 on 911 Torque-Biasing ..............................$1495.•356/741 ‘59-’65 Torque-Biasing................................$1850.•904/911 ‘65-’68 Rebuilt (ZF style) ............................$1495.Ring and Pinions•New 8:39 Turbo (Short) 76-88....................................$2150.•New 7:31 915 72-86 ..................................................$1350.•New 7:31 356 53-65 ....................................................$850.•Ring & Pinion “R” Factor Tool (Nice) ............................$895.Transmissions•356/741 59-65 rebuilt (exchange) ..............................$2450.•901/911 65-71 rebuilt (exchange) ..............................$1895.•915/911 72-86 (exchange) ..............................$1895/$2950.•930/75-88 (exchange) ....................................................Call.•930/38-1988 w/LSD (exchange) ....................................Call.•1990 C-4 rebuilt (exchange) ..........................................Call.•944 S Rebuilt (exchange) 9:35 R & P ........................$2450.•944 Turbo (exchange) 8:27 R & P..............................$1950.•944 83 on (exchange) ................................................$1750.L to R: Judy Hendrickson (PCA Membership Chair), KathyFricke (Zone 9 Rep), Monte Smith (PCA Treasurer), MikeLommatzsch (PCAAwards Committee Chair)L to R: David Bohon (West Texas), Sam Copeland (West Texas), Marvin Ross (Rocky Mountain), Alan Walter (Intermountain),Fran Walker (Carrera)New Gears915interchangeablemainshaft w/first gearNEW! Not only were thecars exciting in themselves, but since Bruce is the leadingauto paint wholesaler in New Mexico, he had paintedall four race cars in iridescent rainbows that madethem works of art view. This isreadying many of the membership for the next level of competition,Club Racing. We need a heightened sense of safetyto go with this extra speed and passing. I'd like to addresswhat appears to be a blindspot in the driving routine of someof us when we get cooking and charged upon adrenaline ?-passing and getting passed.A good pass must start with watching your mirrors andthis must take place BEFORE you enter the straight or passingzone. If someone is on your tail through the corners, prior to the straight, you must assume that this person wantsto pass you. Park your ego and accept that he's a betterdriver (it's possible) or has a faster car (it happens) or whateveryou do to rationalize. The safest way to allow a pass isto move as quickly as possible to the right and get off thegas COMPLETELY.Tech Quiz The 944 was an evolution of the924 with the following innovative changes except one:A. Basically the engine design was one bank of the 928.B. Cast aluminum suspension components were used.C. The DME system controlled the ignition and fuel injection.Fax 719-632-9856D. A lower compression engine was used to meet emissions.45“Over 20 Years of Highest QualityCollision repair & Restoration”• Specializing in Porsche • Lifetime Warranty• Pre-Owned Quality vehicles For Sale• Equipped for all Foreign & Domestic Repair• Insurance Welcome • Personal Service• Highest Quality719-632-0163Why is this a safety concern? Glad you asked. Thesafety aspect is in the rapidly diminishing space the overtaker has if you just barely (or don't) lift off the gas. It's veryeasy to neglect coming off the gas COMPLETELY, to allow aclean pass when you're in "competition" mode. It's somethingthat should be practiced by everyone so that all passesare clean and safe. The alternative is two cars screamingdown the straight and one or the other or both getting in abind, overbraking and losing the line through the upcomingturn, which can be hairy at the higher speeds. We've allseen this situation at TT's. It's something that can andshould be avoided. Running with the "big guys" requires thisheightened sense of alertness to your mirrors and to the factthat you have other people out there with you. What you dohas a definite effect on others. You may not be rememberedor thanked for allowing clean passes, but I can almostguarantee that you will be remembered (and not fondly)if you don't.TOM COMEAU, SAN DIEGO REGION (FROM THE WINDBLOWN WITNESS)?Answer at bottom of Alpine Mart.3115 Karen Place (I-25 & Fillmore Area)TQ courtesy of Liz Cowan.
