28 S p i r i t u a l G i f t slesson developmentImportance of KnowingObjective 1. Describe in a short written paragraph why knowledgeof spiritual gifts is important to the believer.Knowledge Produces FaithFaith is at the heart of all spiritual gifts and their use. Thefact that they are spiritual—that is, of the spirit—shows theneed for faith. Faith makes us believers. Faith also makes ususeful as believers, through the gifts.Bible Knowledge FAITH Spiritual GiftsHow do people get faith? The answer is both simple andsure. Faith is produced by Bible knowledge. Paul made thisclear when he wrote, “How, then, can they call on the onethey have not believed in?” (Romans 10:14). By hearing themessage of the gospel, knowledge is received. Once knowledgeis received, faith becomes possible.Think about the disciples at Ephesus. When Paul first metthem he asked, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when youbelieved?” (Acts 19:2). And they answered, “we have not evenheard that there is a Holy Spirit.” (Acts 19:2). Because they hadnot heard, they did not know. Because they did not know, theycould not believe. Then Paul began to teach them. Through his teaching theyreceived knowledge. And once they had knowledge faith wasborn in their hearts. Therefore, we know that knowledge ofspiritual gifts is the first step toward faith for receiving andrecognizing the gifts, and also for their effective use. Until weknow about spiritual gifts it is not likely they will have theplace in our lives and ministries that God meant them to have.1 Read 1 Corinthians 12:1; 1 Corinthians 14:36; Acts 19:1-7;and Romans 12:6. Complete the statements below by placing thecorrect word or words in the blanks.

30 S p i r i t u a l G i f t sReview Paul’s experience at Ephesus in Acts 19. We havealready noted that because these Ephesians did not know aboutthe Holy Spirit, they could not believe in Him. Now we alsonote that because they did not know, and thus could not havefaith, they lacked an experience which God planned for them. When Paul learned that they did not know about the HolySpirit he began to teach them. He gave them new knowledge. Then they were able to believe what they had not believedbefore. And when their faith acted on their new knowledge theyentered a whole new experience. Their new experience can betraced right back to their receiving new knowledge from Paul’steaching. This helps us to see how important knowledge of spiritualgifts is. Until we know, our experience will be limited.Let us think about this a bit more. When Paul wrote tothe Corinthians he stated that they had the gifts of the Spirit.“For in him you have been enriched in every way—in all yourspeaking and in all your knowledge— because our testimonyabout Christ was confirmed in you. Therefore you do not lackany spiritual gift” (1 Corinthians 1:5-7). It appears that theCorinthians knew of these spiritual gifts and many had them.Yet knowing of them and even having them was not enough. They needed to know how to use them, “Now about spiritualgifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant” (1 Corinthians12:1).Knowing the truth about these gifts leads us to a morefruitful experience in their use. This is why we need to learn allwe can about spiritual gifts.3 Complete each of the statements below by adding the rightword or words.a The correct order for receiving spiritual gifts is knowledge,. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .and . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .b Faith is produced and governed by . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .c Knowing the truth about spiritual gifts will lead us to amore fruitful . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

G o d Wa n t s Yo u t o K n o w A b o u t H i s G i f t s31Groups of GiftsObjective 2. List the spiritual gifts in each group. Objective 3. Distinguish between ministry gifts, other ministry gifts, and, the gifts of the Spirit.Gifts of MinistryThe Bible does not make an exact list under each groupingof spiritual gifts. Sometimes it appears to run the groupingstogether. This seems to say that all of the spiritual gifts areclosely related. However, for our purposes in this study, it willhelp us to divide the gifts into three groups. Each group willhave its own list. Some of the gifts in one group may seem tooverlap, to be almost the same as some of the gifts in anothergroup. This need not trouble us, for all of the gifts come fromGod and have a common purpose—the building up of the bodyof believers and for the glory of God.This first list includes those gifts which relate mainly to ourhighest responsibilities in the body of believers. Paul gives it tous in Ephesians: “But to each one of us grace has been given asChrist apportioned it. This is why it says:“But to each one of us grace has been given as Christapportioned it. This is why it says: When he ascended on high,he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men. . . . It was hewho gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to beevangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers” (Ephesians4:7-8, 11).Our list, then, that should be written down under gifts ofministry is:1. Apostles2. Prophets3. Evangelists4. Pastors5. Teachers
