Skill Drill 12-22General Safety Rules (2 of 3)• Use proper hand and foot placement duringcarries, raises, climbing, and lowering of ladders.• Look overhead for wires and obstructions beforeraising or lowering a ladder. Communicate theresults of this check by stating, “Clear overhead.”• Allow the heel person to take charge of theprocesses of raising and lowering the ladder.• After extending an extension ladder, check thepawls (ladder locks) to confirm that they are set.12

Ensurethat the wall or roof will support the ladderbefore climbing it.• Remain aware of hazards to yourself and toothers.• Maintain hand contact with the ladder. Watchyour hands when climbing up, and watch yourlegs when climbing down.• Use an appropriate leg lock or ladder belt whenworking on a ladder.12
