Belmont Technical College Celebrates Employee AchievementsSt. Clairsville, OH (June 27, 2011) – During recent Belmont Technical College commencementceremonies, two faculty members and one staff member were recognized by the students for beingpositive influences in their success at Belmont. Each student who graduated this year was given the opportunity to complete a nomination form torecommend a full-time or part-time faculty or staff member for Belmont’s “Ray of Light” award. Thecriteria for the award are as follows: the employee energized the student in a special way; the employeemotivated the student to succeed; the employee helped promote a learning-centered environment; and theemployee made a difference in the life of the student. The recipients of Belmont’s Ray of Light award are:Mr. Charles McGlumphy is Professor of Engineering and Program Chair of Engineering, CiscoAcademy, Chemistry, Physics, and Physical & Environmental Sciences at Belmont. The studentwho nominated him indicated that he showed how to learn in a clear and methodical fashion. Mr.McGlumphy was portrayed as “casual, yet professional, normal, and real”. Once, Mr.McGlumphy even made a small mistake. “More than anything,” the student wrote, “I learnedfrom this mistake. I learned that if Mr. McGlumphy, who is very smart, and someone that Irespect, can make a mistake, then I know that mistakes are okay. The way that Mr. McGlumphyhandles instructing sets me at ease and allows me to focus and learn. Mr. McGlumphy is thebest!”Ms. Virginia “Ginny” Moore is the Coordinator of Student Advising and Counseling atBelmont. The student that nominated her said that Ms. Moore was one of the first people that hetalked to about his plans for higher education. She gave him advice and was very supportive, even though he was a bit nervous about enrolling. He was accepted into the Nursing program, but had to meet with Ms. Moore to make it official. That was the part that he forgot. The studentwrote, “My wife and I took a vacation before classes started, and Ms. Moore called me becauseshe knew that I was serious about nursing. She assumed that something must have gone wrong, because I had not stopped in to see her. If she had not taken the initiative to track me down, myseat in the Nursing program may have been given to someone else. She went out of her way tohelp me, and what a difference her support made!”Ms. Amanda Piegan is an adjunct instructor in the Belmont Medical Assisting program. Thestudents that nominated her said that she encouraged them to make it to graduation. According tothem, Ms. Piegan would drop everything to help, even sacrificing her own degree when she filledin for a full-time faculty member for several weeks. Ms. Piegan was a full-time student, a fulltimeteacher, and a full-time mom, but she never let the stress get to her, and she put her studentsahead of herself. If it were not for Ms. Piegan, they felt that they would never have made itthrough the Medical Assisting program.
