Comfort. These are the classic attributes that make a cara Mercedes-Benz. And the G-Class – our classic cross-country vehicle – is noexception. The G-Class offers a unique take on these hallmark Mercedes-Benzattributes, even in the world’s most remote locations where few vehicles makethe grade. The G-Class began its incredible journey back in 1979. Countless technicalimprovements and update measures have been introduced over the years. Yetits unique character remains firmly intact. On the following pages, we bringyou the next stage of this journey. Follow the further-refined G-Class as it headsfor new horizons. And discover how one of the classics in automotive historyis shining in a new light.

The G-Class

Variants9Every legend has a hero. This one has threeThe G-Class variantsThe character of the G-Class has barely changed over theyears. And why should it? After all, its distinctive form isa true design classic. Robust. Practical. Timeless.Like every legend, the classic G-Class cross-country vehicleexists in several versions: from the prestigious long-wheelbaseStation Wagon to the special “BA3 Final Edition”short-wheelbase Station Wagon to the Cabriolet, the latterbeing the only vehicle of its kind in this category. Alsoavailable is an AMG version of the long-wheelbase StationWagon whose looks and performance put it in a class ofits own (see the AMG section starting on page 32). Otherhighlights are the special models featuring a range of fineappointments and equipment options as standard (frompage 52). But as different as the various versions of theG-Class may be, they all have an irresistibly compellingcharacter.

Refinement | Petrol engines11On-road performance you just know willtranslate into off-road capabilityMasters of every situation: the G-Class petrol enginesWhen you settle into your seat in a G-Class, you notice thedifference immediately. The elevated position and theoutstanding all-round visibility provide a clear indicationof what is in store: the G-Class driving experience issomething very special indeed. When you then start the engine of the G 500 you cannotfail to notice that under the bonnet there is somethingexceptional: the powerful 5.5-litre V8 engine, perfectly intune with the demands made by this versatile vehicle. Withelectronic petrol injection and four valves per cylinder,it ensures effortless power delivery at all times. And with285 kW (388 hp) it can tackle the roughest terrain withthe same poise and elegance it displays when breezingalong the motorway – a characteristic that it quite clearlyshares with the second petrol powerplant available for theG-Class: the AMG V8 supercharged engine. Further detailsabout this can be found starting on page 32.G 5007006005004003000 2000 4000 6000Engine speed (rpm)Torque (Nm)530 Nm285 kWOutput (kW)33028023 01801308030G 500. The G 500 achieves its peak torque of 530 Nm across a broad enginespeed range from 2800 rpm to 4800 rpm

14 Refinement | TransmissionsThe more fluid the movement, the better the performanceThe G-Class automatic transmissionsSports stars hone their movements to perfection over a periodof years, their theory being that smooth, fluid movementsmake for outstanding performance.Inspired by this, the Mercedes-Benz engineers havedeveloped an extremely fluid sequence of movementsfor the standard-fit 7G-TRONIC automatic transmissionin the G 350 BlueTEC and G 500. The gear changes arebarely perceptible – even when a gear is skipped, as isnecessary on occasions. So you are always in the rightgear, leaving you to enjoy the superlative driving dynamicsand quiet ride. The G 55 AMG features the specially tuned 5-speed automatictransmission which transfers the immense powerand high torque of the AMG engine to the wheels withconsummate ease.Selector lever. Smooth shifts everytime: the wood/leather selectorlever with Mercedes-Benz badge

16 Refinement | Frame and chassisTested to overcome any challengeFrame and chassis configured for maximum performanceWhen building a G-Class, we leave nothing to chance. After all, longevity and value retention are key qualityfeatures that are a source of great pride for us.With a section wall thickness of up to 4 mm, the G-Classframe is assembled with more than 6400 spot welds beforeundergoing cathodic dip-priming and powder coating. Thevehicle floor is given an additional plastic coating and allthe body variants also undergo thorough treatment in anelectro dip-priming process before the application of severalcoats of paint. This level of protection means that theG-Class offers practically no scope for attack by water, snow, road salt or even desert sand. These are the real challenges which await the G-Class offroad and it prepares for them at our special all-terrainproving grounds. It is here that a G-Class has to win itsspurs by demonstrating the off-road credentials that giveit so much street credibility. On demanding terrain, two precisely located rigid axleswith high torsional flexing and long suspension travelensure the necessary ground clearance and outstandingtraction, meaning that the permanent all-wheel-drivesystem can also exert its full influence.

18 On-road/off-road systemsPower meets intelligenceLow-range ratio and traction system in the G-ClassSheer force alone does not make for smooth progress indifficult conditions. For this you need immense powerwith intelligent control. Driver aside, it is the electronictraction system 4ETS that assumes this task in the G-Class,sending precisely the right amount of engine power tothe wheels that offer the best traction from instant toinstant and so making it much easier to maintain controlon snow or ice-covered surfaces. The driver receives additional assistance courtesy of thetransfer case’s off-road ratio – part of the standard specification. One press of the low-range switch is all it takesto activate this feature. At low speed and with maximumtraction, the G-Class overcomes obstacles with ease.It climbs, clambers and scrambles but, above all, it demonstratesjust what it takes to be a truly great cross-countryvehicle.Greater traction thanks to 4ETS.If up to three wheels have poor grip, they are braked by 4ETS. The tractivepower is then directed to the wheelor wheels offering better grip

20 On-road/off-road systems | Differential locksGo over the next patch of scree. Then turn left into the river bedFully lockable differential locks for full-on off-road drivingTeamwork simply makes it easier to achieve great things. This is why everything works together in the G-Class. Forexample, the permanent all-wheel drive, the electronictraction system 4ETS, the synchromesh transfer case andthe three fully lockable differential locks. This teamworkis one of the outstanding features of the G-Class. It is whatmakes it a true cross-country vehicle. No other vehiclecomes close to offering such a unique combination ofattributes.Fitted as standard, the three differential locks can be activatedindividually and in a logically specified sequence. So you can be sure that the G-Class adapts perfectly to itssurroundings. If a wheel loses traction, the power is redirectedto the wheels offering the best grip. Even if onlyone wheel is providing grip, your G-Class will still makegood headway – an impressive achievement. And justperfect when driving off road.

Comfort | Cockpit23One star at the front. Five stars insideClear, comfortable and well thought-out: the interiorA vehicle bearing the Mercedes star comes with the promiseof quality and precision workmanship. Nowhere is thismore impressively apparent than in the interior of theG-Class.On the following pages you can familiarise yourself withthe G-Class equipment and appointments. Apart fromwhich, we will show you how to create your own individualG-Class (page 46 onwards). The generous feeling of spaciousness imparts a sense offreedom. And that’s before the G-Class has even startedmoving. What’s more, the characteristically high seatingposition ensures excellent all-round visibility at all times, while the cockpit is designed with ease of operation in mind. You experience the comfort and convenience of a G-Classthe second you open the doors and again when you closethem. Attention to detail takes pride of place. As you willsee when you touch the fine-leather-trimmed steeringwheel which, of course, swings upwards once you haveparked, to make getting out even easier. A service thatmerits five stars all of its own.Everything under control. The multifunction steering wheel is available asstandard in leather (G 350 BlueTEC) or wood/leather (G 500 and G 55 AMG)

Comfort | Interior25It’s hard to believe that chrome isn’t a precious metalThe Chrome package for the G-ClassThe Chrome package allows you to underline the innateelegance of your G-Class. It comes as standard with theG 55 AMG and is available as an option for the G 350BlueTEC and G 500. And you can cut a fine figure with theAMG radiator grille with chrome highlights. The interioris afforded an especially high-quality feel courtesy of theautomatic transmission selector lever, which is framed inchrome, as well as the chrome trim surrounding the woodpanel housing the seat adjustment switches and chromerings around the speaker grilles in the front doors. Anothereye-catching detail is the chrome door sill panel in theload compartment featuring Mercedes-Benz lettering(AMG lettering for the G 55 AMG). So you’re certain todraw admiring glances whether you’re off the beaten trackor about town. The automatic transmission selector lever framed in chrome

26 Comfort | InteriorThe G-Class takes your desire forfreedom very seriouslyWith its exceptionally large load compartment capacityDrivers who opt for a genuine cross-country vehiclegenerally have a particularly strong desire for freedom. And the G-Class interior caters to this too, offeringa wealth of space. With the 1/2 : 1/2 folding rear seatbench in the “BA3 Final Edition” Station Wagon andCabriolet ( 1 / 3 : 2 / 3 in the long-wheelbase Station Wagon),the load compartment capacity of up to 2250 litresprovides plenty of room. So, whether you are off ona round-the-world trip or just off to play a round of golf, you can always count on having all the room you need. For those who want even more space, the engineand chassis configuration allows a trailed load of upto 3.5 t. Whether you are towing a yacht, a horseboxor a caravan, the G-Class grants you smooth and swiftpassage almost regardless of the load and terrain.

Safety29A safe bet for even themost intrepid of explorersOn-board safety technology – from Mercedes-BenzWe set the first milestone back in the 1950s with the inventionof the safety passenger compartment. Since thenMercedes-Benz engineers have come up with further safetyenhancinginnovations year after year. And many of themfeature in the G-Class.They help to detect and control critical situations on andoff the road in plenty of time. And they include numerouspre-crash preventive protection measures. Should anaccident occur nevertheless, a whole host of passive safetyfeatures can be activated, so you can sit back and relax:with a G-Class the focus is on making every drive an experienceto remember – for all the right reasons.

30It's good to have a team you can rely onSafety-enhancing electronic assistance systemsWhen you take the wheel of a G-Class, you have already delegated someof the key tasks, thanks to a whole host of electronic aids which canbe activated immediately in critical situations. If the control unit in the G-Class detects a risk of the vehicle skidding, for example, the Electronic Stability Program ESP® springs into actionimmediately by reducing the engine torque, applying the brakes at oneor more wheels and thus helping to stabilise the vehicle. If emergencybraking is detected, Brake Assist (BAS) builds up the maximum brakingpressure within fractions of a second, while the modified anti-lockbraking system (ABS) developed specifically for the G-Class helps toensure that the vehicle remains steerable and that its directional stabilityis maintained in an emergency. These electronic aids, together withthe passive safety features on board, help to protect the occupants ofthe G-Class.

Safety31G-GuardSpecial protection against the road’s more out-of-the-ordinary dangersThe G-Class special-protection vehicles represent the very highest securitystandards, without compromising where comfort is concerned. The G-Guard’sprotective elements are deeply embedded in the body structure at theproduction stage, helping to ensure comprehensive all-round protection. They include numerous discreet safety details which can protect you inan emergency. Some 80 years of experience in protection technology andballistics have been incorporated into the concept in close cooperation withinternational security authorities. In its glazed areas the G-Guard evenoffers protection levels rated to the highest protection classes VR6 and VR7.The G-Guard is tested for resistance to projectile penetration in a seriesof ballistic tests. And it goes without saying that it also passes all theusual Mercedes-Benz quality and safety tests. All the safety components– such as the electronic control systems, the brakes, the chassis and thesuspension – have been adapted to take into account the vehicle’s heavierweight. So the G-Guard protects you not only in an emergency – but alsoagainst the more everyday dangers you might encounter out on the road. The G-Guard offers mobile protection in extreme situations. It has been tested and certified byinternationally recognised authoritative institutions in accordance with the highest ballisticprotection classes VR6 and VR7

Colours and materials65The irresistible beautyof a beautifully resistant finishThe clearcoat with greater scratch resistance1934. The first “Silver Arrow” must be the only Mercedes-Benz ever to havestarted out in life with less-than-perfect paintwork. When the Mercedes-Benzengineers put the newly developed W 25 racing car on the scales before theEifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in 1934, the car weighed 751 kg – 1 kg overthe strict weight limit imposed by the international racing federation.“Well, that takes the shine off things,” mused Mercedes racing manager AlfredNeubauer – then realised he’d just put his finger on the solution. He promptlyordered the engineers to sand down the white paintwork, exposing the silvercolouredaluminium bodywork. This shed the necessary weight and the rest ishistory: Manfred von Brauchitsch won the race and it wasn’t long before thepress were raving about the “Silver Arrows”, as they quickly dubbed them.Of course, things wouldn’t have been so easy for the team if their car had beensporting the current paintwork developed by Mercedes-Benz. This paint ismuch tougher than previous clearcoats, with a more durable, more intense sheen. Both the metallic and non-metallic clearcoats are more scratch-resistant andless susceptible to weather and environmental influences, like precipitation, sunlight, fluctuating temperatures, dust or soot.
