Sports Development Report2011 was an interesting year for the Development directionfor bowls right across the country. Following the CrawfordReport, the Federal Government released funding fornationally run participation programs. Though there are somemajor fundamental procedural flaws in the logic of nationallyrun participation programs historically across the world, wehave embarked on one here in Australia. Our choice was to enter into the project wholeheartedly or towalk away emphatically. I have spent five years in the fieldvisiting clubs and historically the clubs that need assistancedon’t ask and the others don’t need help. There are so manyterritorial issues even within NSW that almost any broadbased activity or idea gets bogged down in area-centricthinking.Major change is only possible either generationally or byapplying a great and dramatic force and historically we havealways adhered to the gentle generational approach. I haveBowls NSW Magazine ReportA considerable amount of work has been carried out in recentmonths on the creation and development of an electronicpresentation for the magazine. While a fully digital format is still some time away, we have tobe ready to embrace new technology when the time is rightfor a change. This is why a readership survey was conducted earlier in theyear. Several options in the type of approach are beingconsidered, and will be ready for implementation in thefuture.Meanwhile, the printed version of the magazine continues tobe published and circulated to members. This is supplementedwith a digital archive copy at the end of each month. In keeping with the Association’s tight budgetary policy for thenext fiscal year, the magazine’s expenditure is being closelycontrolled. This is a natural situation in the present economicenvironment.Committee Reportsinvested six years of my life in the Development area and Ireally want this initiative to succeed. The early signs are encouraging with 80% of clubs receiving avisit from their Community Development Officer. Pleasesupport the work these brilliant staff do. They all work hard, are smart and are keen to assist in any practical way they can.In the meantime we are still operating our successful smallbowls loan program, our seminars, telephone support serviceand Member Protection Information Officer support.I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Whiteman,Andrew Lynn, Chris Green and our trainee Josh Wilton fortheir service and dedication. This is a small dynamic teamenvironment which means the pressure to perform is everpresent and there is just no room for slackers or self-servers.Michael BeaumontSports Development ManagerAdvertising sales are obviously difficult in the current businessclimate, but we are maintaining healthy levels, thanks to theconsistent efforts of Advertising Manager Beverly Trippas. The Lifestyle Options supplement continues to generateinterest in the magazine and is a popular segment withreaders. The response to various giveaways and competitionsis a proven record of the scope of our readership among bothmen and women.During the year we were lucky to recruit Col Crossingham as aproofreader, and this has enabled us to improve efficiency inthis area of the production process. We are also particularlygrateful to our suppliers, who enable us to produce themagazine at very competitive costs. All projections for the year ahead indicate that we will ensurepublication of the magazine within the budget set by theAssociation’s Treasurer.Rex DaviesManaging EditorState Match CommitteeThe preceding year has once again seen a tight programme ofevents completed thanks to the efforts of manyadministrators at all levels across NSW. The ongoing level ofassistance provided across the State is greatly appreciated bythe State Match Committee (SMC) and our thanks to all whohave been involved in any of our events. The 2012 State Conditions of Play (COP) contained quite adramatic change to the grading system and this has beenevaluated and refined for the 2013 COP. As well, many issuesraised in response to a review of Pennant structure andorganisation have also been evaluated and some of thesesuggestions have also been incorporated into the 2013document. The 2013 COP will become operative on 1 January2013 and the SMC is happy to attend any Zone to assist in theinterpretation of the COP or generally assist Zones withunderstanding the role of the SMC.The SMC would like to thank the Editor of the Bowls NSWMagazine for the provision of space for a State MatchCommittee Report in each issue. This has provided anopportunity to alert each and every bowler in NSW withBowls NSW, 2011-12 Annual Report & Year Book Page 8
