Their questinvolves enlisting help from theanimals in Dublin Zoo, some unusualleprechauns, and hundredsof other children…it’s all perfectparade material, and forms a fittingcentrepiece for what promisesto be five jam-packed days of spectacularentertainment. The literary theme will be reflectedacross the festival, particularlyin a new ticketed eventscheduled for the day after StPatrick’s Day. DublinSwell -Words and Voices from the Cityof Literature - will take place inDublin’s Convention Centre andwill feature performances fromsome of Ireland’s best-loved writers.Famous local faces readingon the night will include CathyKelly, Joseph O’Connor, RossO’Carroll-Kelly, Sebastian Barryand Nobel Laureate SeamusHeaney. Popular broadcasterMike Murphy will play the roleof Master of Ceremonies for theevent.Great Irish writers will alsofigure in this year’s free LiteraryTreasure Hunt on Saturday,March 19, where participants ofall ages will get cracking at theclues and conundrums hidden insome of Dublin’s well-known culturalvenues.Another event, ‘How IrelandFinds its Voice’, will look at howthe Irish literary tradition has progressedinto film, TV, radio, theatreand music. That debate willtake place in the O’CallaghanAlexander Hotel on March 16.MusicBut if literature is the overarchingtheme of the 2011 StPatrick’s Festival, music plays anequally important role, and oneof the most eagerly-awaitedevents this year is the Commitments’20th Anniversary ReunionConcert. The stars of Dublin’s most famoussoul band get together atthe O2 on March 19 for the firsttime since the making of the film‘The Commitments’ in 1991.Another hotly-anticipated gigwill be held at the National ConcertHall on the same night, whentrad queen Sharon Shannon takesto the stage. This year’s festivities tie inwith Seachtain na Gaeilge, andDublin will play host to an explosionof Irish language andmusic events all week. Some other exciting eventsscheduled as part of this year’sfestival include the annual rowingrace on the River Liffey betweenUCD and Trinity on St Patrick’sDay, an improv comedy show inthe Laughter Lounge, a programmeof Irish films in theScreen cinema, and a FestivalRoad Race through the streets ofGeorgian Dublin on March 20,hosted by Irish Olympian andformer Grand Marshal EamonCoghlan.InjectionThe five-day festival will providea vital cash injection for thecity, and organisers are hopingthat this year’s profits will exceedlast year’s total estimated returnof €50.5 million.Other figures showed that120,000 visitors from overseas attendedthe festival with 61 percent booking into Dublin hotelsor guesthouses.ConfidenceFrank Magee of DublinTourism has expressed confidencethat the 2011 St Patrick’sFestival will kickstart the revivalof Irish tourism.“This year, it is more importantthan ever that Ireland sendsout a signal that all is well, we areopen for business, visitors will geta great welcome and the value tobe had has never been better,” hesaid. For a full timetable of events, visit www.stpatricksfestival.ieYour Door to Best AdviceFrom left, Peter Mc Kenna, Croke Park, Niamh Mc Groden, Croke Park,John Kelly and Deirdre Merrigan, both from AIB Drumcondra and Alan Gallagher, Croke Park.AIB would like to congratulate our customers, Croke Park, who were Highly Commended within the EnvironmentalSustainability category, at the SFA National Small BusinessAwards 2011.LOW FEELETTINGAGENTPropertiesurgentlyrequiredthroughoutNorth Dublin● TRAD QUEEN: Sharon Shannon will take to the stage at the NationalConcert Hall as part of the festival.Drop into any branch | 1890 724 724www.aib.ie/businessAllied Irish Banks, p.l.c. is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.to advertise inthe northside peopletelephone:8621611No Let - No FeeContact us01 8335844087 6869312a.loftus@gunne.ie

Now Ray has a seriouscompetitor in the ‘very helpfuldepartment’ from Pat Howlettwho works in the new AudiCentre in Ballsbridge.Audi’s new baby is built onthe Polo platform, but of courseis a bit fancier. There are no fansof two-door cars in our houseand you need to be slim tosqueeze into the back seat.Family members made no secretof the fact they wouldmuch prefer something withfour doors. But they all did like thegraph-like front parking lights, which make the car very attractiveat night time.Every picture I had seen ofthe A1 was red, but the test carwas black with a silver arch onboth sides. Overall the externallook wouldn’t exactly wow youon first viewing, but it’s muchmore attractive inside. Mostcars I have driven recently havehad predominantly black cabins. But the A1 is like a breathof fresh air with a nice touch ofgrey on the front and back seats.I know it sounds contradictory, but the grey really does brightenup the décor. The back seatcould, at a squeeze carry threepeople, but there are only tworear seat belts. You get the latest stop-starttechnology, but it can be turnedoff if required. A few weeksback I said that the stop-starttechnology in the Land Rover’sFreelander was upsetting mydaughter’s last minute studyingon Monday mornings. We didn’trealise then that the technologycould be turned off.The controls on the dash arewell laid out. Then you get avery useful pop up informationdisplay unit on the dash. If thedisplay is too bright at night yousimply fold it down. On theroad the A1 was nifty, but comfortable.I drove an automaticmodel, but there was also a toggleoption to move through thegears if required. Thankfully Iwas able to set a speed limitwhich warned me when I hit60kh/m, which seemed themost sensible speed to do as wenow get regular speed checks atlocations which are definitelynot accident black spots. This motor would definitelybe attractive for ‘young singletons.’The boot is a decent size,Recently awarded 5 starsin the Euro NCAP crash test, the new Audi A1 is one of thesafest vehicles in its category, including when it comes tochild safety. Available fromjust €19,595 on the road, thenew A1 has already provedpopular with Irish customers. The winning entrant willbe decided by a panel ofjudges and Rob Kearney willpresent the prizes so this isyour chance to impress yoursporting hero as well as haveby Seán Creedonbut no spare wheel, just a repairkit. 37 northside 16 MARCH 2011. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE EASThealth & beautyOsteopathythe simple beauty behind the treatmentREPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY (OR RSI)?Repetitive Strain Injury(or RSI)?Repetitive strain injuriesaffect the soft tissues of thebody e.g. muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Therefore they have majoraffects on joints. Repetitivestrain injury, repetitive stressinjury, or RSI is a term thatmost people have heard of.RSI is a name that is used todescribe many differenttypes of soft tissue injuryincluding carpel tunnelsyndrome and tendonitis. Itis usually caused by amixture of bad ergonomics, poor posture, stress, andrepetitive motion.Do you use a computer formore than a few hours a day?Do you work on a factoryproduction line or play amusical instrument? If theanswer is yes then you arecertainly at risk from repetitivestrain injury. It may not be alife threatening injury, but RSIhas the potential to causecrippling disability and pain.Early treatment is the key tosuccess, because recovery canbe a very slow process. The key to dealing withrepetitive strain injurysuccessfully is treating thesymptoms and tackling thecauses. The symptoms of aninjury could be one or more ofthe following:• Pain, stiffness, swelling, numbness or tingling in thehands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, back or neck.• Discomfort which is broughton by carrying out a particulartask, and then improves whenno longer doing it; i.e. if thepain lessens or disappears overweekends, or during holidays.• Discomfort starts in one area, for example neck and back, and then spreads to other partsof the body. Early warningsigns may manifest as soreshoulders or neck pain, possibly when travelling homeafter a day at work. Equally theeffects may show up themorning after as aches andstiffness in the limbs and thehands.Would you say you sufferfrom any of the following?1. Weakness2. Fatigue3. Lack of endurance4.Tingling, numbness or loss ofsensation5.A feeling of heaviness6.Clumsiness7.Difficulty opening and closinghands8.Stiffness9.Difficulty using hands(turning pages of books ormagazines, turning doorknobs, holding a coffee mug)10.Reluctance to shake hands11.Difficulty carrying things orholding bus poles12.Hands fall asleep13.Waking up with wrist painor numb hands, especiallyduring early morning hours14.Lack of control orcoordinationOsteopathTony O’Brien D.O.M.O.C.I. Anyone that works withcomputers is in a high RSI riskgroup, due to the demandsplaced on the wrist by typing.Musicians, athletes andconstruction workers are alsoprone to RSI due to the stressplaced on joints and muscles.Muscles cause movement andusually need to relaxbetween exertions. Somemuscles work even whenthey are not involved inmovement (postural muscles)bad posture means thesemuscles have to work evenmore. When muscles areoverworked they becomeinflamed and sore. Tendonsattach muscles to bones, overworked muscles causetendons to overwork and alsobecome inflamed(tendonitis). Inflamedmuscles and tendons cancause damage to the nervesand blood vessels that supplythem, and untreated cancause permanent loss ofmuscle and motor function.Repetitive strain injury isparticularly common in thosewho have mechanicalimbalances and haverepetitive jobs or hobbies. These imbalances could havebeen caused by accidents orfalls in ones past. Mechanicalimbalance causes more strainon joints and soft tissues thannormal, and so these tissuesare more susceptible. It iseasy to see why someathletes and those who dophysical work are prone tosuch strains, and thereforehow important it is for suchpeople to maintain correctposture and mechanicalbalance.Osteopathy helps in repetitivestrain injuries in two ways. Not only dealing with theacute symptoms, but also, working to establish balanceand harmony in the body. For queries any of the Articlescontact Tony O’Brien or ChrisCampbell at the LittlejohnClinic, 122A CromwellsfortRoad, Walkinstown.Telelphone: 01 4560300.Tony also has a private clinicin Swords and can be reachedat 087 2992899 or 018021748. 38 health & beauty 16 MARCH 2011. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE EASTHelp tobanish yourrosaceawith IplIf you are a rosaceasufferer, you know howembarrassing andemotionally devastating itis to suffer from thiscondition. The onset of rosacea usuallyoccurs between the ages of30 and 50 years. Rosacea ismore common in womenbut more severe when itstrikes in men.Rosacea is a very commonskin condition characterizedby a red face. This skincondition causes flushing ofthe face which eventuallyleaves permanentlyenlarged visible red bloodvessels and capillaries, anda red faced appearanceespecially on the cheeks, nose and mid face. In timeraised red bumps or acnelesions also occur.Recently, the use of IPL(intense pulse light) hasrevolutionised the treatmentof rosacea. The IPLtreatments are veryeffective at closing downenlarged blood vesselswhich cause the red faceappearance that is seen inpeople suffering fromrosacea.• The signs of this condition :• Facial flushing• Persistent redness• Acne bumps• Visible blood vessels onthe face. How does Ipl get rid of thered face?IPL or intense Pulsed Lightuses a bright flash of visiblelight to close down theblood vessels and capillarieswhich cause flushing andthe red faced appearance.IPl uses a filter which onlyreleases a specific colour oflight, one that is uniquelyabsorbed or picked up bythe blood vessels of theskin, to hit the skin. Thus theIPL light beams only affectthe dilated blood vessels onthe skin and do not injurethe normal skin. When theIPL light energy is absorbedby the dilated blood vessels, the dilated blood vessels areinjured and close down. Thisremoves the blood vessels, capillaries and the redappearance of the face. What is the treatment like?IPL treatments are veryquick, simple. Protectiveshields, like sunglasses, willbe placed to protect youreyes. A soothing Gel will beplaced on your skin for yourcomfort and to improve theeffectiveness of the IPLtreatment. The treatmentsensation will vary fromclient to client. Most of ourclients say that it feels like ahot pinprick or the flicking ofan elastic band on their skin.Any discomfort ismomentary and there is nolasting sensationWhen will I see results? For moderate to severecases 3 treatmentsscheduled 5 weeks apart arerequired to get you started. This is because it isimpossible to equally coverand close all of the affectedareas during eachtreatment.Be realistic about results –IPL may not work for you. Most patients seeimprovement quickly, butrosacea is as individual asyou are and nothing isguaranteed. Skin type, skincolor and condition, generallifestyle – all have a bearingon how successful thetreatment will be. Aspecialist dermatologist canhelp you to determine if IPLis likely to work for yourrosacea.Be careful about sundamage – after IPLtreatment, your skin will beextremely vulnerable to UVlight and you need to weara high factor sunscreen at alltimes and keep out of thesun as much as possible.Call us today and book askin analysis with our Beauvisage skin analysis, aninnovative system whichhelps us diagnose skinproblems up to 2mm underyour skin, including blood, melanin and sun damage.TOWARDS EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND CLEAR THINKINGDEPRESSION - A STRUCTURE FOR CHANGEWHEN caught in depression, happiness is hard to find.Pleasure eludes you, motivationdries up, you worry and lackconfidence in your own views. You think you are unlovable andfeel trapped. Your relationshipsdeteriorate and you withdrawfrom others. Caught within apersistently negative mood, thegloom seems impenetrable. This process practically alwaysincludes patterns of negative, depressive thoughts includinghelplessness, hopelessness andworthlessness. Like a badtenant, depression rarely leaveswithout strong urging. However, depression is part of‘the human condition’. Feelingdown is inescapable. Ineveryone’s lifetime there will bedisappointment and, for some,it will be much more thanothers.Depression very often followsvery high levels of stress, but forsome dealing with it (andavoiding it) becomes a way oflife. Yet depression need notcontrol a person’s life.As an individual learns to detectand reject droning depressivethoughts and engage in antidepressivebehaviours, depression tends to lift. There is, in fact, very goodreason to be optimistic aboutgetting relief from depression. In the US, where psychologicalinterventions such as CognitiveBehavioural Therapy began, ithas been estimated that 80 percent of depressed peoplerespond to evidence-basedtherapies.So, if the odds are as high as 80per cent for getting relief fromdepression, it might be worthwhile for the sufferer to makethat bet! For those who wouldput themselves in the 20 percent who fear they can nevercontrol their depression, theyare actually dealing with what’scalled hopelessness thinking. The founder of psychoanalysis,Sigmund Freud, believed thatdepression was a complexcondition that resulted fromearly childhood trauma. However, the 21st century viewis that it is a condition formedby a mix of psychological, socialand biological factors that bringabout individual responses tostress factors and cognitive(thinking) styles.Compared to earlier solutionsover the centuries for treatingdepression, the modernemphasis in changing cognitionshas scientific backing. Whateverthe causes of depression andindividual differences in how wemay show it, we know that byaddressing our thoughts it ispossible to decrease other partsof depression, such as fatigue, eating difficulties, addictivebehaviour and troubled sleep.Depression doesn’t discriminatebetween social status, religiousbeliefs, influence or wealth. When dealing with depression, people of different races,50% OFF ALL COURSES OF LASER /IPL SKIN REJUVENATION AND HAIRREMOVAL + 20% OFF ALL FILLERSfor the month of Marchintelligence and culturesdescribe almost identicalthinking, physical and emotionalsymptoms. However, no matter who orwhere the depressed person is,knowing how to identify androot out depressive thinking is aproven way to gain the upperhand on depression and preventit from coming back.• Des Jennings, BA, MBA,MCIM, HG Dip, is a CognitiveBehavioural Psychotherapist. You can make an appointmentby calling 085-7307557 or e-mail therapyhg@gmail.comImagez Hair SalonNorthside Shopping CentreBack to 2006 PricesAll Hairdressing 10% Discount all weekPast & Present Clients WelcomeOpen Tuesday-SundayLate night Thurs & Friuntil 8.30pmJoin our savings club for allthose good hair daysTel: 01 847 5716for enquiriesnot in conjunction with any other offers.10% OFFALL HAIRDRESSINGwith this adNot in conjunction with any other offerHOWTHTREATMENTS OFFERED FOR Ageing Skin (age spots)Sun DamageRosacea (red veins)AcnePigmentationHair RemovalMole AnalysisMicrosclerotherapy (leg veins)Injectables including facial fillers,Sculptra and muscle relaxant injections.Skin Peel treatments to address a large variety of skin conditions.Introducing Image Skincare - America’sfastest growing cosmeceutical range!Anti-ageing lunchtime skin peel treatments torejuvenate, brighten, tighten and lighten the skin.No downtime.Medically - led clinic using cutting edge technology including IPL,Beau VisageSkin Analysis, Salt a Peel Microdermabrasion.Anti-ageing lunchtime Image Skincare skin peel treatments to rejuvenate, brighten, tighten and lighten the skin. This proved to be a very positive experienceindeed. She explained my problem, and the proposedremedy, in a clear and concise manner. On her advice I decided on a pair of ’behind-the-ear’ units witha choice of 3 settings.“After the initial ’surprise’ at my improved hearing I cannow confirm that I enjoy TV without disturbing domestic peace. The quality of dialogue and social-interaction is much improvedas I can now chat on a ’one-to-one’ basis with the help of thededicated programs in my ’Resound’ hearing aids. Following a number of teats theaudiologist recommended that I be fitted with hearing aids. Ican’t believe the benefit to me of wearing thehearing aids. I can now hear sounds I hadn’t realised I wasmissing.“For example, birds singing, the sea, the sound of a riverflowing to mention but a few. But most importantly I hear peoplespeaking without the constant need to ask “what did yousay”? I can now enjoy social events again.
