Cowboys | KaubojiDirected byTomislav MršićSix men, one woman (and her brother) gather withone goal – to put on a stage play. This is no ordinarystory of show-business and art, however, becausethis particular theatre company is an assemblyof antiheroes, drifting aimlessly, seemingly lost inspace and time, in a small town where even the Sunseems to set in the east. Under the guidance oftheatre director Sasa, this company of socially maladjustedamateur actors must fight their demonsand overcome prejudice – within the community andwithin themselves. They decide to base their playon the classic Hollywood western. As they embracethe stereotypes of the genre – the fight betweengood and evil, the clash between civilisation and thewilderness – the actors develop their stories, inevitablyinfluencing and changing each other. As time passes, the play no longer feels like an impossible mission;the actors start to view it as a metaphor for their owndestinies, and grasp it as the opportunity of a lifetime. The play offers them a chance to finish something –perhaps for the first time ever – and to enjoy successfor the first time in their lives.Beneath the deceptively simple surface of thisenjoyable comedy lies a heartfelt critique of modernsociety. Never afraid to hit a deserving target,Cowboys is a punch in the belly of hypocrisy, socialconvention and artistic pretension.Main Cast Saša Anočić, Živko Anočić, Hrvoje Barišić,Kruno Klabučar, Ivana Rushaidat, Rakan Rushaidat,Radovan RuždjakWritten by Tomislav MršićCinematography Predrag DubravčićEditing Hrvoje MršićArt Direction Tanja LackoCostume Design Željka FranulovićMusic Ivanka Mazurijkević, Damir MartinovićSound Design Zoran MaksimovićProduced by Suzana PandekProduction Company KabinetParticipated at2012 | Sarajevo Film Festival - CineLinkTomislav Mršić (1972) – Selected Filmography· 25 th Hour | 25. sat (2011) – short documentary· Vojtjeh In Search Of Truth | Kako je Vojtjeh tražioistinu (2011) - documentary· An Ordinary Day | Običan dan (2010) - shortdocumentary· Accidental Son | Slučajni sin (2007) – documentary;co-directed with Robert Zuber· Emergency Entrance | Ulaz za nuždu (2007) -documentary· Neverland | Čardak i na nebu i na zemlji (2005) –short documentary· Pula Confidential (2003) - documentary· Rio Bravar (2001) - short documentary· There’s Nothing Funny About Line 310 | Šala nije naliniji 310 (1999) - short documentaryEst. date of completion: 06 | 2013Est. duration: 90’Comedy | Colour | CroatianDebut featureKabinetMartićeva 5110 000 Zagreb, CroatiaTel: +385 (0)1 4812 100Fax: +385 (0)1 4812 006gsm: +385 (0)98 766 619suzana@kabinet.hrwww.kabinet.hrFeatures in Production 2013 47

Projections | ProjekcijeDirected byZrinko OgrestaWelcome to one of the final sessions of a four-yearprogramme in group therapy in Zagreb. The head lecturerfor the programme is an American psychiatristpsychotherapistnamed Benjamin Blau, and the groupis made up of three psychiatrists, two psychologists, aspecial education teacher and two pedagogues. Theirmotives for attending this programme are twofold: becauseof their own professional ambition and becauseof Professor Blau’s worldwide reputation.Projections takes place in a rehearsal hall at a musicschool. The hall is located in the basement; it iscompletely soundproof, with no windows and onlyone door. The plot is very intense and is driven bythe charged and turbulent relationships between thecharacters. At the centre of the story is a 40-year oldpsychiatrist, Simona K., who is much more successfulin her professional life than in her private life. This is not, however, a film about group psychotherapy. That is simply a means for exploring its real themes:in particular, the relationship with a father figure, represented by Professor Blau. The members of thegroup project onto him their personal, usually complex, relationships with their own fathers – as well as theirrelationships with any authority figure. The positionof power in which Professor Blau finds himself withinthe group, and which he emphasizes through thestrict rules that he imposes on the group, representsa picture of the world in which we live, torn betweenstructured, repressive hierarchy and destructive, terrifyingchaos. A world in which a lot is left unexplained, and maybe even unexplainable, is another theme. Thefact that different interpretations of events, charactersand relationships between the characters are possibleis fully intentional. The film also explores the challengeof experiencing other people’s feelings and understandingtheir actions.Main Cast Jelena Miholjević, Bojan Navojec, KsenijaPajić, Ksenija Marinković, Doris Šarić – Kukuljica,Polona Juh, Luka Petrušić, Jasna Bilušić, Vladimir JurcWritten by Lada KaštelanCinematography Branko LintaEditing Vladimir GojunArt Direction Tanja LackoCostume Design Alena OrovićMusic tbaSound Design tbaProduced by Ivan Maloča Production company InterfilmZrinko Ogresta (1958) - Selected Filmography· Behind the Glass | Iza stakla (2008) – fiction· Here | Tu (2003) – fiction· Red Dust | Crvena prašina (1999) - fiction· Washed Out | Isprani (1995) - fiction· Fragments – Chronicle of Disappearance | Krhotine(1991) - fictionEst. date of completion: 07|2013Est. duration: 100’Drama | Colour | CroatianInterfilmNova Ves 45|210 000 Zagreb, CroatiaTel: +385 (0)1 466 7290Fax: +385 (0)1 466 7022interfilm@interfilm.hrwww.interfilm.hrFeatures in Pre-production 2013 49

Dead Fish Swim Upside DownMrtve ribe plivaju na leđimaDirected byKristijan MilićThis film follows the journeys of a dozen people, ona late autumn day in a small Bosnian town, as vastflocks of migrating cranes fly overhead. Seeminglyunconnected scenes, laid out in a non-linear manner, gradually reveal various connections between thecharacters. The central motif connecting them isthe bizarre suicide of a retired teacher, the motivefor which remains a mystery. Most of the scenesin the film take place during his funeral, as themigrating cranes fly over the town. The individualstories slowly come to a close after the funeral, asthe cranes disappear from view, and the funeral belltolls, signifying the possible death of one of the othercharacters we have already met; a question the filmleaves open.Cast tbaWritten by Josip MlakićCinematography Mirko PivčevićEditing tbaArt Direction Damir GabelicaCostume Design tbaMusic tbaSound Design tbaProduced by Slaven KnezovićProduction Company Eurofilm; in co-productionwith kfu Oktavijan (Bosnia and Herzegovina)Kristijan Milić (1969) – Selected Filmography· Always Faithful | Uvijek vjerni (2013; in post-production)- documentary· The Champion | Šampion (2010) - short· The Living and the Dead | Živi i mrtvi (2007) - fiction· Safe House | Sigurna kuća (2002) - short segment ofomnibus 24 Hours | 24 sata· Boredom | Dosada (1998) - short· Backwoods (1998) - short· Intolerance | Netrpeljivost (1995) - shortEst. date of completion: 01 | 2014Est. duration: 77’Drama | CroatianEurofilmBoškovićeva 310 000 Zagreb, Croatiagsm: +385 (0) 98 734 142sknezo11@gmail.comFeatures in Pre-production 2013 53

Step by step we are facing the truthabout the past in the era of the communist regime inYugoslavia, when Hebrang’s fate and the murders often associated people were declared top secret.Andrija Hebrang was the secretary of the CroatianCommunist Party, the leader of the Partisan movementuntil 1944 and one of the creators of the CroatianPartisan State. Under the command of JosipBroz (Tito), the political secret police known as udbaarrested Hebrang in 1948 on a false charge of wartimecollaboration with the government of the IndependentState of Croatia. His family was never informedabout his destiny, the time and manner of his death, orthe whereabouts of his funeral. During the so-calledinvestigation, Hebrang’s wife Olga was also arrestedalong with her three young children, and an unidentifiednumber of people who udba regarded as potentialwitnesses. Some people who refused to give falsetestimonies were murdered, some were sentenced totemporary punishments, and the Hebrang family wasforced to change its family name to Markovac in orderto conceal the memory of the person whose namewas so vilified that it could not even allowed to bepronounced. The greater portion of archive documents in Croatiabecame available after the changes in the 1990s,whereas in Serbia, udba archives have still been classifiedas top secret. The democratic Croatian governmentstill refuses to officially initiate the procedure forthe return of Andrija Hebrang’s body from Serbia toZagreb.64 Documentaries 2013

Almost 20 years after itwas first released, this film looks back on the musicalpropaganda that symbolized the period of innocentnational unity which was soon to disappear. It retrorecyclesa segment of everyday life in Croatia in the1990s: music in the service of the Homeland War.Even the song titles sound like films in their ownright: From the Seventh Century On; Croatian Patriots;Danke Deutschland; Well, My Belgrade Comrade;Mister General; Graves Will Never Forgive; WhenSmoke Clears; Go, Croatian Guard; The Frontline isOur Horizon; A Storm is Coming; etc. Indirectly, it isalso the story of a whole generation that was formedby patriotic pathos while biding its time in bombshelters throughout Croatia – the pathos pumped upby patriotic songs that echoed from radio receiversand tv sets everywhere.Written by Miroslav SikavicaCinematography Tamara Cesarec¸ Iva KraljevićProduced by Nenad PuhovskiProduction Company Factum72 Documentaries in Post-production 2013

In 1978, a film about thecommunist revolution was released in Croatia – afilm that managed to shock everybody. More thanthree decades after its release, An Occupation in26 Pictures by Lordan Zafranović is still seen asa controversial film: regarded by many people bymany as politically anti-Croatian for its portrayalof wartime Ustaše activity, and aestheticallysensationalist because of its scenes of violenceand sex. Even so, it was the last Croatian film to bescreened in competition at the Cannes InternationalFilm Festival. For some, Zafranović is a genuinefilm master with a strong anti-fascist pedigree. Forothers, he is a plagiarist and a communist careerist. However, Occupation, the 27 th Picture is not onlyabout Zafranović; it explores the cultural scandal thaterupted at the end of the 1970s when the film wasreleased, its aftershock as it reverberated through the80s and 90s, and the way that the film continues todivide opinion today.92 Documentaries in Post-production 2013

The best things in life may be free, but Free also demonstrates that “free” is also a stateof mind. As people become used to free samples, freeinformation, free gifts, and a free press, they paradoxicallybecome more willing to tolerate a loss of theright to free education, free healthcare and free legalrepresentation. Vorkapić interviews a wide variety ofpeople, including scientists, lawyers, volunteers, andpoliticians to portray the changing nature of free, andof freedom. Along the way, he shows us that thereis not only no such thing as a free lunch, but there isalso no such thing as a completely free society—weall need to give something back.Written by Vlatka VorkapićCinematography Jasenko RasolEditing Marin JuranićSound Design Tonči TafraProduced by Morana KomljenovićProduction Company Fade In; in co-productionwith Zagreb film106 Documentaries in Production 2013

Forthe past two decades she has lived in exile, comingto Croatia only to visit her brother and niece. In this20-year period she has almost never talked to theCroatian media, believing that nothing has changedsince the 1990s when she was subjected to an almostunimaginable media lynch-mob for taking a standagainst nationalism in her writing. For this, she wasbranded an “enemy of the state”, and a “witch to beburned at the stake”.More than just the story of one woman, this filmattempts to uncover the reality of life for theintellectuals who left Croatia in the 1990s, how theyfare today, and the subsequent fate of their politicalopponents.Written by Mija PavlišaCinematography Senad ZemunovićEditing tbaMusic tbaSound Design tbaProduced by Dana BudisavljevićProduction Company Hulahop116 Documentaries in Production 2013
