Turkey ResultsSOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Preliminary harvest figures for the2012 spring gobbler season are inand West Virginia hunters checkedin 8,332 bearded director of the Divisionof Natural Resources. Thisyear’s harvest is a 10 percent declinefrom the 2011 harvest and a15 percent decline from the previousfive-year average.Biologists have long recognizedthat the brood counts two yearsprior are fairly accurate predictorsof harvest since most of the kill iscomposed of two-year old birds.Brood production in 2010 was 28percent lower than 2009; therefore, the 2012 spring harvest was lowerbecause fewer birds were available.Brood production was higher in2011 but still below the long-termaverage.“Because future harvests are dependenton brood production andsurvival, let’s hope for a dry Juneand a more normal spring in 2013,if there is such a thing,” said Jezioro. The 2012 spring kill is the lowestsince 1989, when 7,245 birds wereharvested by hunters. While all theother districts saw a decline in harvest, hunters in District 1 (northernKurt Starcher shot a gobbler. This especially pleased Jimas he wanted to pass the businesson to them at some point in time.Wheeler proved to be a true visionaryin the retail business. Herealized that Elkins was the hub ofjust about everything that had todo with the “outdoors world.” Heforesaw a market to sell hunting andfishing supplies on a large scale tothe public. He received a commitmentfrom his youngest son, Brian,to strive towards this goal.Through the 1970’s and 80’sWheeler’s was a very successfulenterprise. Jim had learned thatto succeed in the retail businessrequired long hours, wise buying, competitive pricing and a completeknowledge of your products.By the early 90’s Wheeler’s SportingGoods had outgrown its location.Jim bought property on Route33 East in Elkins. So I had Jim’s blessing togive it a go.”It would turn out Marlea was a visionaryin her own right. She foresawa need for a “moderate to better”quality apparel store in Elkins. She found a small empty buildingin a strip mall just off Elkins’busy north-south five-lane. Shesigned a lease and named her store:Marlea’s. She stocked her storewith brand name clothing such asColumbia, Woolrich and Tribal. It was a success almost from thestart. “I had absorbed so much retailknowledge working with Jimthat it was easy - - no breaking instress, just fun. A light bulb wentoff in my head.”Wheeler was not required to have afederal firearms permit to sell blackpowder muzzleloaders, but wouldneed one in order to sell firearms. So he acquired a firearms licenseand promptly ordered 87 pistolsand rifles.
