Reagan's Best Present Was Letter

“Christmas has always been a
very special day for as long back as
I can remember,” Ronald Reagan
once wrote in a letter. “Maybe this

was due to my mother and her joyous
spirit about the day.”
Although President Reagan
could have spent his White
House Christmases with family
at his beloved ranch in Santa
Barbara, Calif., he instead stayed
in Washington, D.C. His sacrifice
allowed Secret Service agents and
other aides to spend Christmas at
home with their families. He was a
thoughtful person.
Reagan grew up in a desperately
poor family. His father was a shoe
sales clerk who had trouble keeping
a job, partly because he was an alcoholic.
“There were very few decorated
trees in the years of my growing
up. But never defeated, my mother
would with ribbon and crepe paper
decorate a table or create a cardboard
fireplace out of a packing box.
And she always remembered whose
birthday it was and made sure we
knew the meaning of Christmas.”
His mother Nelle was an optimistic
Christian woman who always
looked for the positive side in
every situation. President Reagan
explained, no matter how bad things
were for their family, his mother
was always finding someone worse

off than them. Reagan’s most vivid
early memory of his mother was of
her with a covered dish taking it to
a needy family. Nelle was always
helping others.
Perhaps those lean years are one
reason why Ronald Reagan once
said a particular Christmas gift was
especially memorable for him. It
was his favorite gift and it came
from his brother Neil. He called it “a
gift truly in keeping with the spirit
of the day.” Neil had been struggling
to find a suitable gift for his
brother; they both were middle-aged
adults and both men had successful
careers.
Neil solved his dilemma by writing
a letter. In the letter, Neil told his
brother he had found a truly needy
family with small children “who
wouldn’t go to bed with dreams of
Santa Claus in their head.” Ronald

Reagan recounted how his brother
Neil changed that and “became Santa
himself, providing a Christmas from
tree to turkey plus toys and gifts for
all.” Included in Neil’s letter was a
very detailed blow-by-blow account
describing the “joy of the children
and the grateful happiness of their
mother.”
This act of charitable giving by
Neil reads like the end of Dickens’
“A Christmas Carol” and became
President Reagan’s most unforgettable
Christmas gift. He called it
“a gift that will never grow old,” as
he would re-read the letter or think
about the family’s reaction to Neil’s
generosity.
Helping and serving others gives
true joy and happiness, not only to
the recipient but even more so to the

larly touching to Reagan because he knew what it was like to go without.
Today, there are still families out there who are in difficult circumstances
and they face a bleak Christmas. A gift like Neil’s may be the perfect
gift for you to give to that someone in your life who has everything. Your
church or locally based charities such as the Salvation Army are aware of
needy families. You could make a difference and receive special Christmas
joy by giving to a family who has hit hard times. Then write a letter similar
to Neil’s describing the family’s reactions and give it as a gift. This is the
true spirit of Christmas.
On Christmas Eve 1984, speaking to the nation, President Reagan said,
“families and friends across America will join together in caroling parties
and Christmas Eve services. Together, we’ll renew that spirit of faith, peace,
and giving which has always marked the character of our people.”
At the end of his tale, Dickens writes, “it was always said of [Scrooge],
that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the
knowledge. May this be said of all of us. And so, as Tiny Tim observed,
God bless Us, Every One!”

Keeping Obama’s
Promise

Obama promised Ohio voters last
February that if elected he would
renegotiate NAFTA and make it fair
for American workers. With that,
he cut Hillary Clinton’s lead in the
Ohio Democratic primary, put himself
on the path to political victory
and ultimately the Presidency.
Yet, the people who Presidentelect
Obama is appointing suggest
that he intends to follow the failed
“free trade” policies of his two predecessors.
Indeed, Obama’s key econom-

ic advisors are all hard-core “free
traders,” as devoted to the theories
of Adam Smith, David Ricardo,
and Milton Friedman as the Bush
appointees they will be replacing.
For example, Lawrence Summers,
the former Treasury Secretary in the
Clinton Administration, a key advocate
for NAFTA and an architect of
U.S. policies for global financial
deregulation, will head the Obama
National Economic Council.
The Secretary of the Treasury
will be Timothy F. Geithner,
Summers’ aide in the 1990s and now
the head of the New York Federal
Reserve Bank – the man who failed
to monitor Wall Street during the
Bush years. A former employee of
Kissinger and Associates, Geithner,
Steve Wynn. While it is true that he had no real choice but to go ahead and
open Encore, it was a welcome addition to the Las Vegas Strip in a time
where we need welcome additions. In that Steve Wynn was the guy who
once brought Frank Sinatra back to town and is one of the very casino giants
who truly understands what we do in Las Vegas, we need his vision and
institutional memory—particularly in these times.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which on Monday, approved land
for one giant billion-dollar coal-fired power plant near Ely and issued a draft
decision on a second one nearby. If the enviro-nazis lose at the appellate
process, we may be able to power Las Vegas over the next 25 years.

And A Bouquet of Weeds To:
The California Supreme Court which ruled that it is OK to sue non-medical
personnel—that’s a fancy way of saying good Samaritans—who come to
your aid in an emergency and maybe aggravate your injury because they are
trying to get you clear of, say, an exploding car. Which is exactly what the
case they were hearing was about. Genius. Sheer genius.
too, is a devoted free trader.
The Administration’s point person
on trade will be Ron Kirk, who
is glaringly unqualified for the job.
In the late 1990s, Kirk was the
Mayor of Dallas, Texas, and in 2002,
a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat
now held by his GOP opponent.
Kirk has no experience in negotiating
major trade deals or enforcing
them. As Mayor, he supported
NAFTA and as candidate for the
U.S. Senate he supported having the
U.S. make more free trade pacts.
After failing to win the 2002
Texas Senate race, Kirk joined the
giant Houston law firm of Vinson
Elkins, where he lobbied the Texas
Legislature for the Wall Street private
equity firm Kohlberg Kravis
Roberts & Co and TPG, a global
investment firm.
TPG has more than $50 billion
of capital under management around
the world. KKR controls 51 private
equity portfolio companies and has
a total value of more than $68 billion.
KKR has done the largest
buyouts in the history of the U.S.,
the Netherlands, Denmark, India,
Australia, Turkey, Singapore, and
France. Besides its U.S. offices,
Vinson Elkins has offices in Abu
Dhabi, Beijing, Dubai, Hong Kong,
London, Moscow, Shanghai and
Tokyo.
The principal criticism of the
Clinton and Bush trade policies is
that they were not about trade, but
about making the world safe for
U.S. investments. It was investment
policy. Those policies, reduced to
binding international treaties, facilitated
and speeded the outsourcing
of U.S. factories, jobs, and service
work, even as they made the import
of those foreign-made goods and
services quota and tariff-free in the
U.S.
U.S. Trade Representative designate
Kirk has the perfect background
and connections to continue those
corporate-pleasing investment policies
for the Obama Administration.
His will be a familiar career path
– continue to serve corporate interests
while in charge of U.S. trade
matters and then become a highly
paid international “consultant” after
leaving Office.
The Obama Administration can
do better than this. The U.S. Senate
should help the new President by
refusing to ratify this nominee.

Political Office Does Not Require Rocket Scientist
You can tell that the economy has everybody in a surly
mood when New York Democrats are busy attacking Caroline
Kennedy’s credentials to become the next junior Senator
from the state.
Caroline Kennedy not qualified to become a Senator?
Give me a break/
Now, I have very little in common with Ms. Kennedy’s politics,
but to say that this accomplished lawyer and author
isn’t qualified to serve in Harry Reid’s Senate is like saying
that John McCain wasn’t qualified to be President. It’s just
not true.
First off, the major qualification to be a Senator is a strong
stomach. Look at Exhibit A, Harry Reid.
In fact, the reasons most people would decline a seat in the
Senate is that a Senator has to spend each day of his or her
six year term raising enough money to get re-elected. And
those numbers are starting to get well into the eight figures,
even in small states like Nevada.
Somehow, I don’t think the founding fathers thought that
ability would become a qualification, but it has.
Other than the ability to get re-elected, my guess is that
many Americans, perhaps 100,000,000 of us could easily
serve in the Senate.
It’s not rocket science.
And if you think that also doesn’t apply to the House, go
watch Charlie Wilson’s War which has the added benefit of
being mostly true.
Somehow, the punditocracy seems to have decided that
there are actually qualifications for political office beyond
those enumerated in the Constitution.
Let’s put this into perspective.
The people who brought you the auto company bail-out
debate, who would presume to tell the folks who actually
run the auto companies that they don’t know what they
are doing have pissed our money away faster than GM and
Chrysler could have ever dreamed.
They need qualifications for that?
The truth is that we rarely—if ever—get truly qualified people
to run for political office because they don’t want to put
up with the crap that goes along with running.
You get a pubic colonoscopy and it’s not even on pay-perview.
It’s where they probably got the idea for American
Idol.
Real people usually don’t want to see their rectum on camera
in a public setting.
So, sometimes we get well-intentioned people, sometimes
we get good people dedicated to public service but many
times we get the Rod Blagojovich’s of the world who see
being a governor as being a stepping stone to the big
time.
So, when Caroline Kennedy—for whatever the reason—
throws her hat into the ring, to hear anyone say that she has
no qualifications to serve strikes me as ludicrous.
To be a brain surgeon, you need qualifications.
To be a rocket scientist, you need qualifications.
To be a closer for the Anaheim Angels, you need the same
qualifications as Troy Percival and Francisco Rodriguez.
To be the round mound of rebound, you need the same
qualifications as Charles Barkley.
But any rocket scientist, brain surgeon, and yes, K-Rod,
Percy or Sir Charles could probably do a pretty fair job as a
United States Senator. All they need to do is get elected or
appointed.
So, don’t tell me that if Harry Reid can be a Senator, Caroline
Kennedy cannot.

Review: NOCA In Phoenix

PHOENIX, Az—We don’t run a lot of restaurant reviews here because
we’re pretty well aware that most people know what they’re going to get
at places like Burger King where most of our readers (and this writer) eat
when we’re in a hurry.
That said, I had a business meeting with my partner in our broadcasting
company last week and he took me to dinner at a place he had invested in
last summer.
All I can tell you about the conflict of interest is that if I didn’t think the
place was great, you wouldn’t even be reading this.
But if you have business or pleasure in Phoenix, make a point of eating
at NOCA, 3118 E Camelback Rd.
You might think that with a four letter name and a shopping center location,
NOCA is some sort of a fancy cult restaurant and you would be about
half right. It is rapidly developing a cult following but is anything but fancy.
NOCA stands for North Of Camelback, and is located in a traditional strip
center anchored by a Safeway store.
But it was driven by restaurateur Eliot Wexler and the Chicago native
knows his food.
Friday night, the space was packed with a wide variety of Phoenix din-
ers in the middle of a recession and they were there for the food.
In a word, it’s very, very good.
I had what was perhaps the best filet I ever tasted—and my work as a
journalist has had me eat is many places around the world.
Turns out the meat came from a purveyor located in Calumet City,
Illinois and this particular item wasn’t even on the menu but is available on
order.
NOCA has an array of salads, all of which are not only presented well
but taste as good as they look.
I didn’t see a frown on anybody’s face for the entire two hours I was
there and when something doesn’t go right at a restaurant, believe me, you
can see it in an environment like that.
The service was attentive but not obnoxious and it’s obvious that Wexler
has put together a team which enjoys the work. That sort of thing shows.
My only criticism is that his deserts offered nothing for the one third
of us who are diabetic and cannot eat sugar, but I’m not sure that anything
which is sugar-free is available to meet his standards.
Price-wise NOCA is slightly more expensive than, say, the Capitol Grill
but the value is clearly in the food and the experience.

Madoff And Social Security:
Two Ponzi Schemes
The buzz all the week of 12/15 has been the multibillion dollar scam of
Bernie Madoff. It has been labeled the biggest Ponzi scheme ever.
Let’s understand what that is. It is named after Charles Ponzi who lured
thousands of small investors in 1920 to invest in what looked like a very
safe and lucrative arbitrage using government stamps. In 1920 he made
millions. People were mortgaging their homes to give him money for his
“guaranteed” return. He was paying first investors with money from last
investors. And keeping some for himself on each transaction.
The scheme was revealed when the same thing happened to him as has
occurred with Mr. Madoff. More people wanted their money than there was
money in the kitty. In Madoff’s case it was because of poor trading. He lost
billions playing the market with OPM – Other Peoples Money.
That is why I don’t like to give my money to any money manager. If
it is going to be lost I will be the one to do it, but so far I am ahead of the
game. Take a look at your own managed fund statement. Most folks could
have done better with darts and the stock page.
Wait a minute. Let me look in your wallet. It’s not all there. When you
got your last paycheck there was a deduction for FICA otherwise know as
Social Security. You and your employer are required to contribute (nice
word, contribute) 7.5% of your pay to the Social Security Trust Fund. The
money goes to Washington where in an account called a Trust Fund that is
designated to be held for your retirement. Sounds good.
Wait.
Then along come Congress that has the Federal Government create a
piece of paper called a Treasury Bond (that’s an IOU) and transfers the
money into the General fund. Now all those wise men we voted for can
access it for their favorite projects like Indian arrow factories and bridges
to nowhere.
As long as there are more workers putting in money than is being taken
out it seems like a great idea. Unfortunately, history has shown that there
has never been a Ponzi scheme that has not gone broke.
If SS funds had been kept separate all these years since 1933 there would
be plenty, but the greed of elected officials has set the stage for a future
demise. Our Congressmen are putting off the “go broke” date by increasing
the retirement age and adding to the amount paid required to be paid in. No
one dares talk about what you will receive if hyperinflation kicks in.
We are all victims of the greatest Ponzi scheme ever created and we did
it to ourselves .

America Spends A Lot on Health
Care — But So Does Everybody
Else
On both sides of the aisle, politicians repeatedly criticize the amount of
money America spends on health care.
They’ve got a point. America’s $2 trillion healthcare tab is quite steep.
But America’s not alone — every other developed nation, even those with
universal healthcare systems, struggles with high healthcare costs.
Indeed, people in other healthcare systems often pay more than
Americans do, once taxes are taken into account. Add in the high nonmonetary
costs of rationed or denied care and waiting lists, and suddenly
the vaunted European systems commonly touted as models for the United
States don’t seem like a good deal at all.
Let’s dive into the numbers.
In America this year, a family of four with an employer-based PPO will
face about $15,609 total in healthcare costs. Of this amount, the employer
will pay on average $9,442, and the employee will contribute $3,492 in
premiums and $2,675 for co-pays and other expenses. Employee premiums
are about 6 percent of the median family’s annual income — less than what
that family spends on food.
In Canada, while the percentage of taxes used to provide healthcare
varies, it is estimated that 22 percent of taxes collected went to the health
system in 2004. Several provinces, including Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and
British Columbia, also charge additional premiums. Canadians may spend
their own money to receive private treatment for procedures or drugs that
are not covered by the government system.
Citizens of the United Kingdom pay 11 percent of each pound they make
in weekly income between $198 and $1,326 for care through the state-run
National Health Service, plus an additional 1 percent of income over $1,326
per week. That’s nearly double what Americans pay.
The co-pay for drugs is low, but many drugs are not covered, often
because they are not considered cost-effective enough to justify inclusion in
the government’s plan.
But what if you need one of those drugs? Well, you can kiss your NHS
benefits good-bye. Anyone who uses his or her own money to buy drugs
outside the NHS will find him or herself shut out of the system.
In Germany, coverage from a public sickness fund currently can range
significantly in cost, from around 12.2 to 16.7 percent of income, with the
employee paying a bit under half. This coming fall, premiums are set to
be standardized — and healthcare experts anticipate that they will be set
around 15.5 percent. Private patients can generally expect to pay more than
they would in the public system.
In France, employees contribute only 0.75 percent of their salaries
towards medical care, but they also pay a 7.5 percent General Social
Contribution, the majority of which is earmarked for the health system.
This base coverage reimburses people for the bulk of costs for doctor visits
and for a portion of the costs of medications. On top of the government
coverage, almost all French residents have supplementary coverage from a
mutuelle, which costs approximately 2.5 percent of salary.
When compared to the U.S., the fact is that the health care systems in
Europe and Canada don’t save citizens much at all.
Health reform is urgently needed in this country, and cost-cutting will be
a critical component of any reform efforts. Despite its supporters’ claims to
the contrary, government control of the healthcare marketplace is anything
but a ticket to a lower-cost healthcare paradise.

In Pursuit Of
Peace
God has provided everything you
and I need to enjoy a life of peace.
The Bible tells us to strive to live
in peace with everybody and pursue
that consecration and holiness
without which no one will [ever] see
the Lord (Hebrews 12:14 AMP). The
word strive means to “follow, pursue,
and make every effort.” It is important
to understand that God expects
us to chase, hunt, track down, and
work at obtaining peace.
When we find something we
value, we pursue it. We don’t wait
for it to come to us; we go after it.
We understand that nothing we really
want suddenly materializes. We
have to pursue it! How about peace
in your life? Do you value it? If I
had the opportunity to spend some
time with you, I would probably be
able to discover exactly how much
you long for a peaceful life.
Those who think peace is no big
deal will never have it consistently.
They aren’t committed to doing
whatever it takes to get it, so they
lose their temper or worry all day
long or get upset or stressed out—all
because they don’t make the daily
decision to pursue peace.
The first forty years of my life,
I lived without the blessing and
benefit of peace. I can say from
experience that life without peace
is miserable. You cannot enjoy life
without first having peace. I used to
pray for peace regularly, but I found
out that I needed to go after it in a
strong way. I made a decision that I
would be willing to make whatever
changes were necessary in order to
have peace in my life.
Maybe it’s time for you to make
a personal evaluation. How much
peace do you have in your life right
now? Think about your day. Is it full
of arguments, stress, confusion, and
turmoil? How much effort do you
expend each day actually pursuing
peace? You don’t pursue peace by
worrying or stressing out about your
situation. You pursue peace by making
the strong choice for peace.
Let me show you what I mean.
Every single day, you come to crossroads;
you encounter situations that
could go either way. You know what
I mean. You find yourself in a situation
where someone has cut you off
in traffic or forgotten an important
assignment at work or made a huge
mess in the kitchen. Now you are
confronted with making a choice.
Are you going to lose your temper,
stress out, and say things you don’t
mean only to make the situation
worse? Or are you going to make the
choice for peace? Are you going to
take a deep breath and pursue peace
even in those difficult situations?
There’s a verse in 1 Peter 3:11
that says, Let him turn away from
wickedness and shun it, and let him
do right. Let him search for peace
(harmony; undisturbedness from
fears, agitating passions, and moral
conflicts) and seek it eagerly. [Do
not merely desire peaceful relations
with God, with your fellowmen, and
with yourself, but pursue, go after
them!] (AMP).
I love the way that verse reads.
Peter is exhorting us to search for
peace, to seek it eagerly. That tells
me that peace isn’t something that
you will simply stumble upon. You
won’t just become peaceful by accident.
You’re going to have to pursue
it.
If you really want to have peace
in your life, you’re going to have to
make some changes. You’ve got to
change the way you approach every
single day. You’re going to have to
begin to see yourself as a peacemaker—one
who brings a sense of
calm to every situation— and then
make the choices that will actually
turn that into a reality.
Why should you value peace?
Well, besides the obvious—that
peace is easier and healthier than
stress—peace is the will of God.
God commands us to walk with one
another in a peaceful way. Walking
in peace also improves your sensitivity
to the things of God. When
you are in a lot of turmoil, you
can’t hear God; you can’t hear the
important things He wants to tell
you. Your insides are like a freeway
during rush-hour traffic.
In so many ways, peace is actually
power. Peace leads to joy and
we all know that the joy of the Lord
is our strength (see Nehemiah 8:10).
When you choose to walk in peace,
you are walking in the will of God,
taking His strength and power into
every situation. Stop buckling under
the oppressive weight of stress and
turmoil. Make the decision today
to value peace enough to pursue it
eagerly!
