6 news A month in Mayfair Fashion for a good cause FASHION DESIGNER Henry Holland is launching Debut, an exhibition and event in aid of Cancer Research UK, at One Mayfair in North Audley Street (formerly St Mark’s Church) on March 24. Presented by TV’s Nick Grimshaw and Miquita Oliver, the event is the first of its kind for the charity and will see leading names in fashion, including designers, models and photographers, come together to celebrate British fashion. “Cancer Research UK is a charity very close to my heart,” said Holland. “My mum is a cancer survivor and I wanted to do my bit to help people overcome such a prolific disease. I wanted to create something original and exciting for such a great cause.” The exhibition will include previously unseen photographs and items from the likes of Giles Deacon, Mary Quant, Kate Moss and Rankin. Spread your bets FITZDARES, the Mayfair-based bespoke bookmaker founded by Balthazar Fabricius in 2006 for high rollers, has expanded into financial spread betting. “Essentially, the service allows people to bet on the stock market – so you can bet on currencies, individual stocks – and is different to buying stocks, which you would do with your stockbroker,” said Fabricius. “The big incentive for people to spread bet as opposed to using a conventional stockbroker is that any profits on financial spread betting are capital gains tax free, so you are saving yourself 28 per cent.” Heading the new financial business is trader Greg Mayer, who has been brought in to develop the target market, the core of which is based in Mayfair. “The clutch of hedge funds and investment asset-management businesses in Mayfair is extraordinary,” said Fabricius, “so more than ever Mayfair will be our playground. “We hope this will represent a hockeystick moment for the company and will take us to the next level.” ABOVE: FITZDARES FOUNDER BALTHAZAR FABRICIUS (LEFT) WITH BEN GOLDSMITH, ONE OF THE ORIGINAL BACKERS KAREN MILLEN launched its spring/summer 11 collection at its Regent Street store with an evening of fashion, pampering and shopping. The event featured music by DJ-turnedsinger Yasmin Shahmir and every customer entered a prize draw for the chance to win an outfit of their choice. THE BURBERRY Prorsum show during London Fashion Week was streamed live on the Landmark 32m digital screen at Piccadilly Circus – a first for a fashion brand. “Everyone has been massively supportive and I have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of my contemporaries in the industry,” said Holland. “We aim to make sure it is an unforgettable evening.” There will be music from top performers and DJs, and all the pieces on show will be available to buy at auction on the night – including a signed copy of the first issue of Vogue edited by Alexandra Shulman. “As a lover and collector of fashion magazines, I’ll be keeping a keen eye on this lot at the auction,” said Holland. Holland says his relationship with Cancer Research UK is a long-term commitment and that he hopes to make this an annual event. Home help THE ANNUAL Architect in the House fundraising initiative run by housing charity Shelter and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) officially launches on April 18. Through the scheme, now in its 15th year, architects give up their time to offer hour-long consultations to the public in return for a £40 suggested donation to Shelter. Ruth Reed, president of RIBA (based in Portland Place), said it was “an excellent way for homeowners to create a home tailored to suit their specific needs”. COPYRIGHT TERRY O’NEILL Stones and Beetles CHRIS BEETLES has opened a new photography gallery at 3-5 Swallow Street. Called Chris Beetles Fine Photographs, the gallery is run by its photography specialist Giles Huxley- Parlour, who has put together all the photography shows at the Ryder Street gallery over the past four years. Eight exhibitions are planned for this year, the first of which, Eve Arnold, finishes on March 5. Catwalk talk THE WORLD’S FASHION press and British and international buyers once again assembled at Somerset House last month for London Fashion Week, where emerging talent showed alongside iconic British designers such as John Rocha, Jasper Conran and Paul Smith. Samantha Cameron, who is an ambassador for the British Fashion Council, officially opened the autumn/winter 2011 season. She said fashion made billions for the economy and employed hundreds of thousands of people, making it “one of the most important industries, full stop”. Glad rags on for LCF show THE LONDON COLLEGE of Fashion held its annual MA Fashion Design and Technology Show at the V&A’s Raphael Gallery.
