<strong>Kiyo</strong> <strong>AKAsAKA</strong><br />
<strong>Kiyo</strong> Akasaka is the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public<br />
Information. A career diplomat, Mr. Akasaka has served several multilateral organizations<br />
in different capacities. From 2003 to 2007, he was the Deputy Secretary-General of the<br />
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).<br />
From 2000 to 2001, he served as the Japanese Ambassador to the United Nations. He<br />
joined the Japanese Foreign Ministry in 1971 and was its spokesman on climate change<br />
issues for many years.<br />
<strong>KhAled</strong> <strong>AzAb</strong><br />
Khaled Azab holds a PhD in Islamic monuments from Cairo <strong>University</strong>. He has participated<br />
in several relevant conferences and published a number of books on archaeology. He has<br />
worked as an editor and correspondent for Al-Hayat, Afaq and other Arab newspapers. He<br />
headed an archaeological inspectorate between 1994 and 2001.<br />

Hugo Barreto is the Secretary-General of the Roberto Marinho Foundation (part of the Globo<br />
media conglomerate), a Brazilian institution set up in 1997 to coordinate projects related to<br />
education, the environment, heritage and television.<br />
PAuline Couture<br />
Pauline Couture is an author and strategic communication consultant whose career has<br />
encompassed all aspects of broadcasting, including journalism, on-air performance,<br />
production, strategy, regulatory work and executive management. Her consultancy portfolio<br />
includes public and private sector clients, as well as foundations from Canada and around<br />
the world. She is highly sought-after as a public speaker and moderator in many fields. She<br />
is a language lover who writes and works in French and English, and is currently studying<br />
Mandarin.<br />
GeetA dhArmArAjAn<br />
Geeta Dharmarajan is a writer, editor and educator, as well as the Executive Director of<br />
Katha, a non-profit organization she founded in 1988. Her innovative, award-winning work is<br />
geared to uniting India’s different language communities. She views translation as a means<br />
of fostering unity, reinforcing diversity and offering the illiterate equity and the opportunity<br />
to participate in lifelong learning. Her efforts to further education and reduce poverty have<br />
brought change and introduced the joy of reading to 8 million women and children in slums<br />
and tribal villages.<br />
AzzA ezzAt<br />
Azza Ezzat holds a BSc in tourism and hotels from the <strong>University</strong> of Alexandria, and is<br />
currently studying for a master’s degree in caricature, humour and satire in ancient Egypt<br />
during the New Kingdom. During her career at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, she has organized<br />
numerous writing, calligraphy and inscription events, and participated in the editing and<br />
translation of several books, including History of Writing: From Ideogram to Multimedia,<br />
for which she received a prize from the Kuwait Foundation, How to Read Ancient Egyptian<br />
Language and Lost Languages.<br />

Until recently, Ahmad Fawzi was Director of the UN News and Media Division. As a UN<br />
spokesman, he served in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor, and travelled the world with<br />
three Secretaries-General. He directed the UN Information Centre in London for six years.<br />
He joined the UN in 1992 as Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, after forging a<br />
career in broadcast journalism, government and academia.<br />
GrAhAm FrAser<br />
Graham Fraser is Canada’s Commissioner of Official Languages and an author with 40 years<br />
of experience in the field of journalism. He studied at the <strong>University</strong> of Toronto, where he<br />
earned a BA and an MA in history. Over the years, he has held positions of ever-greater<br />
responsibility at various newspapers.<br />
He has been awarded honorary PhDs by the Université Sainte-Anne and the <strong>University</strong> of<br />
Ottawa, and has received the Public Policy Forum’s Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in<br />
Public Policy Journalism.<br />
isAbelle leGAre<br />
The Alliance of Civilizations is an initiative proposed by the President of the Government of<br />
Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, at the 59th General Assembly of the United Nations<br />
in 2005. The initiative seeks to galvanize international action against extremism through<br />
the forging of international, intercultural and interreligious dialogue and cooperation. The<br />
Alliance places a particular emphasis on defusing tensions between the Western and<br />
Islamic worlds. Isabelle Legare is the Alliance’s Youth Program Manager. One of their goals is<br />
to have a youth perspective in the media debate, on cross-cultural and interreligious issues.<br />
Aly mAher<br />
Aly Maher is an Egyptian diplomat and intellectual. After serving as an ambassador to<br />
France, he was appointed Secretary-General of the Arab Thought Foundation, where he<br />
played an important role in improving cross-cultural dialogue and presenting a global view<br />
of the Arab culture. From 2006 to 2008, he directed the Institute for Peace Studies, which is<br />
part of the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement.<br />

Professor Sozinho Francisco Matsinhe holds a PhD in linguistics with special reference to<br />
Bantu languages from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).<br />
He has held different positions as a teacher and researcher at the National Institute for the<br />
Development of Education, an institution that operates within the Ministry of Education, in<br />
Maputo, Mozambique.<br />
In December 2009 he was appointed Executive Secretary of the African Academy of<br />
Languages (ACALAN), which is a specialized institution of the African Union Commission<br />
and is based in Bamako, Mali.<br />
jArbAs mAntovAnini<br />
Jarbas Mantovanini was formerly the Roberto Marinho Foundation’s Communication and<br />
Regional Manager in São Paulo. A graduate of the <strong>University</strong> of São Paulo’s Law School, he has<br />
always worked in the field of communication, directing educational TV shows, advertising<br />
campaigns and institutional videos. He holds an MFA in film production from Boston<br />
<strong>University</strong>. He has led projects to develop São Paulo’s Portuguese Language Museum and<br />
Football Museum, coordinating the content creation, research, licensing, production and<br />
communication processes.<br />
Antoni mir<br />
Antoni Mir began working for the Government of Catalonia in 2004, firstly as Secretary-<br />
General for Language Policy and later as Director of Linguamón – House of Languages,<br />
a public body that the same government and Barcelona City Council set up in 2005 to<br />
disseminate, protect and enhance the value of the planet’s linguistic heritage.<br />
A language studies graduate, he has developed a career as a manager and leader of cultural<br />
projects and organizations in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.<br />

Robert Moropa’s professional career spans more than three decades. He began working as<br />
a regional librarian for the former Transvaal Provincial Administration before moving to the<br />
<strong>University</strong> of Fort Hare and then to the <strong>University</strong> of Transkei, where he held a number of<br />
positions. He has served as a member of the Advisory Committee for the Bill & Melinda Gates<br />
Foundation’s Access to Learning Award. He is currently Director and Head of the Department<br />
of Library Services at the <strong>University</strong> of Pretoria.<br />

Nomazulu Mda has been the SABC’s Manager of International Affairs for the past two years.<br />
She was previously responsible for international strategy and relations at the South African<br />
Ministry of Communications. She holds an MA in international relations from the <strong>University</strong><br />
of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and is currently writing a research report on<br />
broadcasting policy in southern Africa as part of a master’s degree in management in ICT<br />
policy and regulation.<br />

Noha Omar holds a BA in French language and literature from the <strong>University</strong> of Alexandria’s<br />
Faculty of Arts. In 1992, she obtained a Diplôme d’Etudes Françaises Approfondies from<br />
Paris-Sorbonne <strong>University</strong>. She has a wide-ranging professional background in a number of<br />
multinational organizations. She has held several positions at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina<br />
since joining the institution in 2001, and is currently Deputy Director of its Publishing<br />
Department. At present, she is studying for a master’s degree in the post-modern novel in<br />
French Literature.<br />
Chris rAinier<br />
Chris Rainier is a fellow of the National Geographic Society. He co-directs its All Roads<br />
Photography Programme and is in charge of photographic and video documentation for the<br />
Enduring Voices project. As a National Geographic Society photographer, he specialises in<br />
documenting indigenous cultures for the institution’s Cultures initiative. His life’s mission<br />
is to contribute to empowering indigenous peoples, helping them to use photography and<br />
technology to enhance their culture and preserve endangered languages. He assisted Ansel<br />
Adams in completing all his photographic and conservation projects between 1980 and<br />
1985.<br />

Anna Solé Mena holds a BA in humanities and an MBA. She has worked in international<br />
organizations since 1995, and at the European Commission since 2001. She speaks<br />
five languages fluently. Her career and personal situation have brought her into contact<br />
with many multilingual families (like her own), and she has conducted research into<br />
simultaneous language acquisition in children. She has recently published her findings in a<br />
book called Multilingües des del bressol. Educar els fills en diverses llengües [‘Multilingual<br />
from Birth. Raising Children in Different Languages’].<br />

Joie Springer directs UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, an initiative geared<br />
to raising awareness of the urgent need to preserve analogue and digital documentary<br />
heritage. The programme’s register currently lists 193 items from different countries<br />
around the world.<br />
Ms. Springer is also the UNESCO Project Coordinator for the World Digital Library, which aims<br />
to promote international and intercultural understanding and awareness, increase the<br />
volume of multilingual and culturally diverse content on the internet, provide resources for<br />
educators and contribute to academic research.<br />
hillAry wiesner<br />
Hillary Wiesner directs the Carnegie Corporation of New York’s Islam Initiative, a foundation<br />
programme that aims to enhance the American public’s understanding of the diversity of<br />
Muslim societies, cultures and thought. The programme chiefly works with universities and<br />
also supports projects of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the USA’s National Endowment<br />
for the Humanities. Ms. Wiesner holds a BA in religion from Harvard, an MA on the ancient<br />
Mediterranean world from the <strong>University</strong> of Chicago and a PhD from Harvard’s Committee on<br />
the Study of Religion.<br />
Colin williAms<br />
Colin Williams is a research professor at the School of Welsh, <strong>Cardiff</strong> <strong>University</strong>. His main<br />
academic interests are sociolinguistics and language policy in multicultural societies, and<br />
ethnic and minority relations. He has previously taught in universities in Canada, England<br />
and the USA. Between 2000 and 2010, he served as a member of the Welsh Language Board<br />
(WLB), a position to which he was appointed by the National Assembly for Wales. Since<br />
April 2010 he has been an adviser to the WLB, concentrating on international aspects of<br />
language policy and intergovernmental relations.<br />

Gustavo Win, a Uruguayan-born American radio and television journalist, has been involved<br />
in international broadcasting with Voice of America since 1984.<br />
He has full oversight responsibility for different international training projects in the area<br />
of health journalism. He recently created and implemented health journalism workshops<br />
in Senegal, Kenya, India, Argentina and Panama. He is also responsible for developing and<br />
implementing workshops on ethics in journalism in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador,<br />
and Uruguay.<br />
