vs Containment Systems.Hot Aisle ContainmentHot aisle containment is similar but focuses on the exhausted hotair from the rear of the cabinets. The hot air is extracted from abovethe cabinets and is directly chanelled back to the coolers. This air is notmixed into the data centre but is only fed back to the coolers. Thecoolers reduce the air temperature and push the resulting cold airthrough under floor ducting, to the floor in front of the cabinetswhere it is drawn up through the cabinet again, completing the cycle. The advantage of this system is that it is much easier to install into anexisting data centre, as the additional equipment required is fittedabove the cabinets, easing the installation and reducing costs. In the event of a cooler failure, the ambient data centretemperature is able to cool the equipment for longer, giving a greaterresilience against fast temperature increases. The effectiveness of thesystem is increased further as the hot air is still removed from the topof the cabinets, removing the effects of the exhausted hot air mixingwith the cold air from the coolers. This sytem allows the coolers to run more efficiently than with othersystems because the return air is that much hotter. The data centreitself will be regulated at a comfortable temperature since it is nolonger the space that the residual heat is dumped to.Alternative Cooling SystemsTemperature Controlled FansOne easy to install and cost-effective solution can be to installtemperature controlled fan trays into existing cabinets. These trays aretypically installed into the top of the cabinet and when thetemperature rises above a user defined point, the fans come on tohelp exhaust the hot air from the cabinet. They have their ownthermostat built in and only require a single mains socket to work.Since fan trays are installed into the roof of the cabinet, the heatgenerated by the fan will be exhausted into the air space above thecabinet, which means that temperature controlled fans do not add tothe heat inside the cabinet.A typical 4-way rackmountable temperature controlled fan.Climate CabinetsClimate cabinets are cabinets that have their own air conditioningsystems built in. This system has some advantages such as the abilityto place the cabinet anywhere, even if there is no false floor or noexisting air conditioning system. These cabinets are ideal for smalleroffice, where a dedicated server room is difficult, or where there isonly a small amount of the equipment to be cooled. They work thesame way as any air conditioning unit and require a thermal exchangeunit to be placed remotely from the cabinet, usually on the outside ofthe building. They are not the most efficient way to cool equipment, since the airconditioning unit will have a fixed exchange rate. So although thecabinet may start off with only a few items of heat generatingequipment, if more kit is scheduled to be added, the air conditioningunit will have to be specified as a larger unit, minimising the efficiencyuntil the cabinet is complete. The correct blanking panels wouldneed to be removed and thrown away when more equipment is to beinstalled.Cabinets & RacksData Centre CoolingData Centre Cooling vs Containment SystemsA wall mountable cabinet with built-in air conditioning unit.ConclusionThe least economical form of cooling is perimeter cooling, so anymove from this system is likely to increase efficiency and reduceenergy bills. A large green field data centre may consider cold aislecontainment as the ideal solution, but for many existing data centres, hot aisle containment looks to provide the best overall increase inefficiency and potentially the best cost saving in energy reduction. It iseasier to install and maintain, which helps reduce both the initial costand the on-going maintenance costs. In both hot aisle and cold aisle containment solutions, it is imperativeto ensure the correct flow of air is present and that all cabinets haveblanking plates, where required, to force the air to follow the desiredpath. Whichever solution is opted for, correct air flow is the key toensuring the best, most effective cooling.Climate cabinets, with their built-in air conditioning systems, provide agreat solution for individual cabinets. Smaller installations where littlemore than a single wall mounted or floor standing cabinet arerequired, are the perfect place for this solution. Climate cabinetsprovide the cooling required, in an easy to install solution, withoutsome of the wastage associated with other cooling methods. TheBlack Box range starts with an 800 BTU wall mount cabinet and goesright up to an 8000 BTU full height floor-standing cabinet. For cabinets without the massive heat generation of servers andblade servers, roof-mounted temperature controlled fan trays are theanswer. If the cabinet contains a few Ethernet switches and routers, itwill not generate the same level of heat as a cabinet full of bladeservers, so why pay more for an expensive solution you don’t need?As each and every site is different and every customer has a differentrequirement, allied to the fact these solutions are mostly modular, wefeel it’s best to discuss each customer’s requirements with them. Cabinets & RacksCooling CabinetsColdLogikColdLogik CabinetsWhen cooling is everything.ColdLogik — How It Works1. Chilled water is provided by a free cooling module, chiller or a combination of both.2. The resulting chilled water is pumped through thepipework by the patent pending Leak Prevention System.3. Chilled water is then drawn through each rear doorcooler. The waste heat from the active equipment housedwithin the cabinets is rejected to a heat exchanger matrix. The net result is that the exhaust air returning back intothe room is at ambient temperature and therefore has noimpact upon the interior of the data centre.4. The ColdLogik system controller's continually monitorthe 'air off' temperatures and the returning watertemperature. This in turn regulates the rear door coolerfan speeds, the inlet water temperature and volume.Saving Money — Free Cooling ModuleFree cooling modules can be supplied as a factory fittedextra within the chiller cubicle when space is at apremium or as a separate self-contained unit. All theunits are designed to the closest ambient for the desiredsystem water temeperature which at worst case is within3 O C. Our free coolers are all fitted with inverter drivenenergy efficient fans to increase energy saving whenambient falls below the point of free cooling. These canbe fitted to an existing facility when changing from astandard CRAC to ColdLogik system.Cooling Distribution UnitIn many cases it is necessary to tap off an existing chillerwhich already supplies chilled water to other on siteservices at 6 O C. If chilled water from the primary circuitwere to remain at this temperature condensation wouldbe induced within the rear door coolers. The CoolingDistribution Unit has been designed to provide closecontrol cooling to the rear door coolers eliminating thepotential of condensation. The process side water, otherwise known as the secondary circuit is a sealedpressurised system with the heat extracted from the reardoor coolers being rejected to a raw chilled water circuitvia a stainless steel plate heat exchanger.Rear Door CoolerIntelligence — ColdLogik Management SystemThe key element to controlling the room environment isthe 'ColdLogik Management System'. Each rear doorcooler is intelligently manged for optimum efficiency byembedded computers that continually adjust theoperational parameters in response to the heat removaldemands placed on the system. By making continualload adjustments the ColdLogik System Controllersmaintain the room ambient temperature.Peace of mind — Leak Prevention SystemThe patent pending Leak Prevention System is anotherColdLogik initiative. By putting the data centre loopincluding the rear door coolers on a negative pressurecircuit the whole data centre is safe from potential leaksin places where it can beleast afforded. In the unlikelyevent say a coupling became loose or a hole was drilledinto a pipe, air would be pulled into the gap/hole,thereby preventing water from escaping. The resultingair now in the circuit is drawn through to a tank inside oroutside the chiller, where it is finally vented out of thesystem and prevented from continuing back around theloop. Inline sensors detect a leak which in turn providesa warning, alerting the user to the problem. Importantlythe ColdLogik system will continue to work, with nonotable effect to its cooling capabilities. As with allaspects of the ColdLogik system the 'LPS' can beretrofitted to an existing circuit, is modular in design andtherefore scalable, so it grows with your data centre.Energy Efficient — ChillerOur chiller systems use the latest technology with eitherhigh efficiency scroll compressors or oil-less magneticallydriven centrifugal compressors both with high EER andESEER energy figures. Our custom built units from 10 to250kW can cater for any ambient from -40OC to +55OCor adverse environmental conditions. The chillers can besupplied complete as a standalone package with pumpsand tanks or as part of a larger system. The chillercontrols communicate directly with the ColdLogik systemcontroller and can vary the water temperature asrequired.Cost ComparisonA cost comparison between a standard hot/cold aisle server room and a ColdLogik server room with the followingspecifications.- Room: 8 x 13 metres (104 m2)- 2-3kW per cabinet- (24) Blade Servers (each producing 2.65kW)Standard Hot Aisle/Cold AisleDescription Quantity Unit Cost Total Cost19" Cabinet 24 £750 £18,000Chiller (NO Free Cooling) 1 £21,250 £21,25036kW Down Flow CRAC 2 £8,000 £16,00Rear Door Heat Exchanger 0 £0 £0Raise Floor 1 £300 m 2 £30,160NO - Leak Prevention System 0 N/A N/ATotal Cost £85,410.00ColdLogik SystemDescription Quantity Unit Cost Total Cost19" Cabinet 8 £750 £6,000Chiller (NO Free Cooling) 1 £32,870 £32,87036kW Down Flow CRAC 1 £5,500 £5,500Rear Door Heat Exchanger 8 £1,550 £1,550Raise Floor 0 £0 £0NO - Leak Prevention System 1 £5,500 £5,500Total Cost £62,270.0016 Tech Support: 0118 965 6000 | Sales: 0118 965 6150

The Black Box range of ColdLogikcabinets, feature a water cooling system thateffectively reduces the heat generated byequipment at source without the usual riskof leaks. Water and electricity obviously donot go well together, and traditional systemsdo not offer any solution to the possibility ofwater leakage, an effect that would bedevastating to a cabinet of live equipment. The Black Box ColdLogik range of cabinetsemploy a ‘pull’ pump for the water coolingsystem, rather than the traditional ‘push’pumping system. This ensures that if a leakoccurred, air is sucked into the pipe workrather than water spilling out. This type ofpump system is called a negative pressuresystem, as there is no ‘positive’ pressure forcingthe water out of the pipe. Instead, thesucking effect of the pump pulls the waterthrough the entire system, and leaks willonly serve to add air into the flow. This air isremoved from the pipes further down thechain.Due to the high efficiency of the coolingsystem, the water temperature can be muchhigher than the traditional 6 O C, which meansa smaller chiller size may be employed, reducing both capital expenditure andongoing running costs, and increasing theavailability of energy efficient ‘free cooling’.The water temperature may be comfortablyset between 14 O C and 22 O C and yet stillachieve the maximum heat dissipation of45kW. The requirement for a smaller chillerreduces the typical energy consumptiondown by 35%. For a further 60% in energysavings. When these savings are addedtogether, an energy saving of over 90% canbe achieved. These energy savings can be equateddirectly to qualifying companies, as arecognised reduction in carbon foot printand therefore taxation benefits through theCarbon Trust and the Enhanced CaptialAllowance Schemes initiatives. To add further savings, because thewater temperature is higher than thetraditional 6 O C, there is no need to purchasecondensation prevention equipment as thereis no chance of condensation forming at thewater temperatures used.Capital expenditure is a major issue withany new build or new requirement, but forgreen field sites, the decision is now a nobrainer. The Black Box range of ColdLogikcabinets require no false floor for coolingducts, and they require no hot aisle or coldaisle containment systems. They provide abetter use of the available space and lose no‘U’ space from within the cabinet. They evenrequire no side of cabinet space at all andwithout doubt offer the best solution forrequirements where space is a real issue. Thismakes the range ideal for installing intocabinets that are already being used. Withno demand for under floor space or overcabinet ducting, these cabinets provide theideal solution at a cost effective price.CablingCooling CabinetsColdLogikRetro FittingOne of the best features of the Black BoxColdLogik range, is that it can be retro fittedto existing cabinets. All of the cooling apparatusis built into the rear door, which can befitted to any existing cabinet. By coolingdown the exhausted air of the cabinet, toless than the ambient room temperature, these cabinets can actually be used to keepyour whole data centre cool. You can evenswitch off your existing CRAC units in mostsituations. When installed with the free coolingmodule, these cabinet rear doors, canhandle 40kW of heat entering them, andstill only exhaust an air temperature of 12 O C.Typically, these cabinets will require a watertemperature of between 14 and 20 O C. Mostcustomers run them at 14 O C. This reducesthe amount of energy required by at least athird. After installing a free cooling moduleand turning down the CRAC units, you canexpect a total energy reduction (based onthe cost of the data centre cooling) ofaround 90%. The ability to add this featureto any existing cabinet from anymanufacturer makes this a very powerfulsolution to the cooling conundrum. The cooling doors weight a lot. The40kW units weigh well over 100kg, but thecabinet does not take the weight. The doorsare connected to the cabinet, but the weightis taken by an independent pole system sothe cabinet is never put under any stress. It’sthis clever mounting design that makes itpossible to use these doors as an upgrade toANY existing cabinet.Black Box ExplainsColdLogik Cabinets.Traditional cooling in data centres is provided by edge coolingas already described. This is an inefficient method of cooling thedata centre as not only are the cabinets cooled, but also all thespace above and below the cabinets, and to the sides, and ofcourse the front and the rear. Most of this air does not requirecooling. As such, cooling the areas other than the cabinetrepresents a huge loss in efficiency and a huge gain in runningcosts..Hot Aisle and Cold Aisle containment systems are basedaround the idea of either controlling the hot air or controlling thecold air, but both are based on the premise that one should bekept away from the other. Both these systems increase efficiencyover the traditional method.ColdLogik cabinets employ a different approach again. Theybring the cooling right into the actual cabinet and remove theheat at source. This system uses the smallest amount of space ofall the systems, ideal for where space is at a premium. The ColdLogik range are the only cabinets to boast a leakprevention system. Other cabinets can only provide a leakdetection system. And as we all know, prevention is better thancure. Most water cooled cabinets push water through the system usinga pump. If a hole develops in the pipes, the water is pushed outinto the inside of the cabinet. Where all the sensitive equipmentis.By employing the pump at the far end of the system, thewater is pulled through, known as negative pressure. If a holedevelops in a pipe, the water is still pulled through the system. The worst case is that some air will also be pulled into the system. Therefore no water will leave the pipe work, keeping all theelectronics safe and secure, and cool. How it works – Water is chilled by the free cooling module, achiller, or by both a free cooling module and a chiller. Theresulting chilled water is then drawn through each rear door ofthe cabinets via the pipe work, using the patented negativepressure Leak Prevention Systems. The waste heat is rejected to aheat exchanger matrix. This air is then expelled into the room atthe ambient room temperature, therefore having no effect onthe air in the data centre. The ColdLogik system controllerscontinually monitor the exhaust air temperature and thereturning water temperature, modifying the rear door cooler fanspeeds, the inlet water temperature and the volume of water.info@blackbox.co.uk | www.blackbox.co.uk17

Cabinets & RacksAcoustic CabinetsuCoustic CabinetsCold Air FlowCold air is drawn in through the front doors ofthe cabinet. This air is drawn through the frontof the equipment by the internal fans present, and exhausted into the rear of the cabinet. Thecold air may be chilled by traditional perimetercooling, or by hot/cold aisle containment.Hot Air ExhaustOnce the air flow has been through theequipment it will be hot. Typically, this air couldbe as high as 40°C or even higher, so the trickis to exhaust the hot air outside the cabinet asquickly and efficiently as possible. Typically, thehot air is exhausted through the sides of therear doors..Limited Space Hot Air ExhaustIn some cases, for instance in area's of limitedspace such as a corner of an office, the hot airis exhausted through the top of the rear doorsensuring that the exhausted hot air is keptaway from the cold air stream presented to thefront pf the cabinet at all times.Solution ProfilesA small firm of solicitors recently upgraded theservers in their office. To try and save costs, theyupgraded from four individual servers to a smallblade server box offering better resiliency and, ofcourse, better future proofing. Unfortunately, theexisting cabinet was in the corner of the main officespace, and after the blade server was switched on, itbecame apparent that the level of noise producedwas unacceptable. The office contacted Black Box tosee if there was anything we could do.The first suggestion we gave was to relocate thecabinet, however due to space and patchingrequirements, this was not deemed a very practicalor cost-effective solution. We then suggested one ofour uCoustic cabinets to replace their existingcabinet. These cabinets are lined with specialacoustic foam and are designed to reduce noiselevels by 28dB. By installing blanking panels, thetotal noise reduction is 28.5 dB. We removed the oldcabinets and installed the new uCoustic cabinet inits place. The blade server was estimated to be around 80dB which is slightly higher than the typical level of anoisy office (78 dB). After the cabinet was installed, the level was approximately 55 dB. Normalconversation is typically around 60 dB and a quietoffice is around 48 dB, so the difference the cabinetmade was startling. To reduce the level to its lowest,Black Box installed the acoustic blanking panels. These quick fit panels also ensure that the air flowsthrough the cabinet correctly, from bottom to topand from front to back. This is critical to maintaininghealthy blade servers.Since the cabinet was in the corner of the office, the only remaining task was to ensure adequate airflow and cooling ability for the equipment inside, especially the blade server itself. Since the uCousticrange of cabinets come with an active fan tray thatis mounted in the roof of the cabinet, the fact it wasplaced in the corner did not cause any problems tothe air flow. To ensure that no power is usedunnecessarily, the fan tray is controlled through athermostat and is only switched on when required.Even the fan speed is controlled to ensure that thetemperature inside the cabinet is kept safe and consistent.info@blackbox.co.uk | www.blackbox.co.uk19
