RY 2012-2013 • No. 37 Tuesday, <strong>23</strong> April 2013MSWD, Bantay Bata Committee conduct 8thtraining seminar for <strong>Makati</strong> barangay leadersThe <strong>Makati</strong> SocialWelfare Department(MWSD) conducteda Life Skills TrainingSeminar for barangayleaders at the <strong>Makati</strong>Youth Home in Brgy. LaPaz, <strong>Makati</strong> on 18-19March 2013. This wasthe eighth trainingactivity organizedby the MSWD andsponsored by the<strong>Club</strong>’s Bantay BataCommittee this RY2012-2013. The BantayBata Committee ischaired by FrankChavez.T h i r t y - e i g h tparticipants from thedifferent barangaysin <strong>Makati</strong> took part inthe two-day seminar,which was conductedby facilitators from the MSWD headed byMs. Remedios Ramos, MSWD assistantdepartment head, and resource speakersfrom MSWD and the Virlanie Foundation.Day 1 began with an opening prayer,an overview <strong>of</strong> the training program, anda welcome message from Ms. Ramos, witha word <strong>of</strong> acknowledgment <strong>of</strong> MWSD ’spartnership with the <strong>Rotary</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Makati</strong>through its Bantay Bata Committee in theMSWD training program.Four <strong>of</strong> the seminar’s eight sessionswere done on the first day, with Ms. Ramoshandling the introduction, which sent theparticipants on a journey <strong>of</strong> self-discoveryto find their strengths and weaknesses, aswell as family values, factors that affectone’s character traits, and one’s personaland career goals.Aries Burgonio <strong>of</strong> Virlanie Foundationhandled the next three modules—ondecision making, creative thinking,and critical thinking. These entailedexpectation setting, body mapping andgoal setting. They undertook exercises inwhich they set goals, charted the steps toreach them, and draw a time line, takingcare to consciously reach the “peaks”while avoiding the “pits.”Day 2 was devoted to the discussion<strong>of</strong> the remaining four topics—effectivecommunication, empathy, interpersonalrelationships, and negotiating skills, withMr. Burgonio as resource speaker. Theydiscussed the importance <strong>of</strong> being agood listener in communications, waysto develop one’s ability to empathizeand enhance one’s relationships withothers, anger management, and conflictresolution.

Pres.Reuben Valerio reported on the forging<strong>of</strong> a Sister-<strong>Club</strong>s agreement with RC ILA book for Ms. April Lynn Tan2Kaunlaran No. 37 • <strong>23</strong> April 2013Bong, Cheonan, Korea,a very young clubcompared to ours, henoted, adding thatonly the PDG, who ishis age (75 y.o.) looked“somewhat aging.”He also recounted hisgastronomic adventurewith a Korean delicacy--raw octopus, which,he soon found out, is“alive” even after beingcut up, sticks to thepalate, and wriggles inthe mouth.Eddie Yap spoke glowingly aboutthe guest speaker, Ms. April Lynn Tan, aCFA (chartered financial analyst), and vicepresidentand head <strong>of</strong> Research <strong>of</strong> the COLFinancial Group, whose job is to analyze themarket to determine whether or not to buy,sell, or hold, and when.Ms Tan made a presentation on therewards and risks in the stock market,drawing a positive picture <strong>of</strong> a marketwhere rewards outweigh risks and assuringher audience that “it is still safe to investin the stock market.” Themarket, she said, wasconsolidating after itsupward run for five anda half months, and shewondered if the marketcould continue its upwardmove. (The answer cameyesterday, 22 April, whenthe PSEi set a new recordby breaching the 7,000mark for the first time inits history.)Putting things incontext Ms Tan assuredthat despite the bad newscoming out <strong>of</strong> Europe,specifically Italy and Cyprus, the risingtension in the Korean peninsula, and thebird flu outbreak in China, there are stillcompelling reasons—she specified five—for investing in the Philippine stock market:with mid-term elections near, electionspending is on the rise, a good thing forthe economy; in a surprising move, theBangko Sentral has cut SDA rates twiceand may impose further cuts; the recentupgrade by Fitch to investment grade, afirst for the Philippines, that is expected tobe a “catalyst for a virtuous cycle” for thecountry; companies are making handsomecorporate earnings; and the fact thatpublic-private partnerships are finallygaining momentum.On the Fitch upgrade, she shared thatfour reasons were given for the increasein ratings: persistent current accountsurplus, strong and resilient GDP growth,improvement in fiscal management andmanageable inflation. This means thatthe Philippines will be included in the list<strong>of</strong> investment destinations for foreigners,incur lower funding cost, and lead to moreinvestments, higher GDP growth, andhigher stock market.
