This coming week sees the arrival in Plainfield of Mr.Raed Makhouli. Raed (pronounced “raw-ED”), anOrthodox Christian and native of the Holy Land, served as the tour guide for last year’s parishpilgrimage to the Holy Land. He did an outstandingjob and had a deep spiritual impact on our pilgrimswith his deeply heartfelt way of connecting the sites wevisited with our faith in Jesus. As I experienced my own reaction to Raed and saw onthe faces of other pilgrims how moved they were bywhat he had to say, I regretted that it was not possiblefor all of our parishioners to hear him experience this. But then I had an idea...I inquired of Raed if he wouldbe willing to consider coming to St. Mary ImmaculateParish in Plainfield to give ourfolks a kind of “virtual” tour ofthe Holy Land. In this way, people who might never get totravel to Israel would have theopportunity to “see” the landwhere Jesus walked and learnmore about this most holy placeon earth. And whoknows...maybe some folks willcome away from Raed’s talkswith a new-found desire to goto the Holy Land one day. That’s what happened to meyears ago when I attended awonderful presentation forclergy put on by the Israelitourist board.So....the time has come.I really urge you to attend these upcoming events!! Here isthe list of scheduled events: Thursday, August 23 at 7:00 p.m.: Raed will speakwith the Spirit and Truth young adult ministry.Reflections from Fr. DavidWalking where Jesuswalked...right here at St.Mary Immaculate!Touring the Holy Landhere at our parish! Monday, August 27: Raed begins a series of dailyvisits with the 2nd-8th grade students in our parishschool. Tuesday, August 28 at 7:00 p.m.: Raed gives the firstpart of the Holy Land tour, tonight featuring the HolyLand outside of Jerusalem. Wednesday, August 29 at 11:00 a.m.: Raed speaks atthe monthly meeting of our Senior Citizens group. Wednesday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m.: Raed joins ourown parishioner and native of the Holy Land, Dr.Salim Diab, in an open conversation about life forChristians in the Holy Land in our own time. This is avery important opportunity tohear about the plight of theChristian community and thereasons behind the mass exodusof Christians from the area of theworld where our faith began.Amid all the “troubles” in theMiddle East, there are a lot oftroubles for Christians.Part of theVia Dolorosain Jerusalem Thursday, August 30 at 7:00p.m.: Raed concludes our“tour” of the Holy Land withhis final presentation, tonightfeaturing the city of Jerusalemand its environs. All of these are greatopportunities for you to learnabout the land that we haveheard about all of our lives. As you have heard mesay since I got back from my first visit to the HolyLand, the land is a character in the story of our faith. To know more about the land is to enter moredeeply into the stories of the Bible and the story ofour faith. The weekend of August 25/26 Raed will pop intothe Masses to greet our parish and invite us to join himfor his talks in the coming week. Sunday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m.: Raed will meet withour High School ministry. These are wonderful events for families with olderchildren.
