8 Wednesday, August 15, 2012 Kingfisher (Okla.) Times & Free PressANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION — Mike Johnson, far right, and John Johnson, farleft, were visited by representatives of the Chrysler Corporation when Johnsons ofKingfisher, the Kingfisher Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep dealership, celebrated its85 th anniversary this past Saturday. The three were on hand to visit with Johnsonscustomers and employees as well as take part in celebration activities. They are, fromleft: Shannon Carr, director of Chrysler’s Southwest Region; Jeff Mohler, district salesrepresentative; and Greg Heun, Ram brand advocate. But youhave to make sure that youdon’t continue to let them ruleyour life.“Her message is somethingI think applies to all situations, not just sexual abuse,” Waltacontinued. “You are going tohave good days and bad days, but you can’t let the bad daysget the better of you. There isalways hope; always a reasonto go on.”Smart also shared that shestill struggles with dark daysand relies on her husband andother family members to helpher through them.“And that’s another point:You have to keep your familyand anyone else who lovesand cares about you by yourside through these toughtimes,” Walta said. “They aregoing to be there to pick youup when you are down.”After the speech, the Waltashad an opportunity to speakwith Smart and the twowomen discussed the similaritiesin their stories and Walta’sdesire to follow in Smart’sfootsteps to become an outspokenadvocate of sex abusevictims.“She inspires me to continuemy path to help otherswho are going through thesesituations and also spread theawareness,” she said. “She isthe most amazing woman Ihave ever had the pleasures ofmeeting. She is the person Iwant to emulate.”Apparently, Smart sharedan equally gracious opinionof Walta. When Walta introducedher fiancee with the laughinglyself-deprecatory comment,“I don’t know what hesees in me,” Smart warmlyreplied, “I know what hesees.”“It was so healing and sogood to see Ann’s smile” Mrs.Walta said.“Seeing Ann with Elizabethafterwards made me knowthat this was such a good thingto have happen to Ann,” shesaid. “And I have become ahuge Elizabeth Smart fan.”Mrs. Walta said a Girl Scoutboard member she was seatednext to prior to the speechasked her what made her cometo the program. When Mrs. Walta said herdaughter also was an abusesurvivor, the board membersaid she would pass that onbecause some board memberswere initially resistant to theidea of the Girl Scouts organizationsponsoring a speech onsuch a dark topic.“I told her that since Annhad spoken out in our smallcounty, at least 17 other caseshad been prosecuted and threeothers in our small town, includinga police officer andanother coach and I fully believedthat the more we talkabout it the more it allows girlsand boys to come forward,”Mrs. Walta said.“After Smart finishedspeaking, she leaned over tome with tears in her eyes andsaid she was so happy thatthey had brought her to speak.“It truly moved her.”Walta said that Smart’sspeech has helped push herout of a recent rut.“She has inspired me tocontact people and organizationto see what else I can do tohelp and encourage others,”Walta said.Caution:Speeds may increase.Introducing 4GLTE, the fastest data speed around.NOW available from Pioneer Cellular. So fasten your safety belt, things are about to get speedy.Fast data, great coverage, always on the go.1-800-641-2732 WirelessPioneer.comNovatel 4510 MiFi Hotspotonly $ 79 .95data plans start at $29.95 per monthPricing requires 24 month commitment on a qualifying data plan. According to theWall Street Journal, those inthe know are expecting decreasedearnings in the thirdquarter, the first quarterlydecline since the beginning ofthe official recovery. Ofcourse, with official unemploymentstuck above 8 percentand anemic real grossdomestic product (GDP)growth, one can be forgivenfor wondering just how theexperts define “recovery” andif the American business environmentis truly on the upswing. To understand our currenteconomic situation we mustdistinguish between a sustainablerecovery and one whichis as artificial as the flavors inthe Kool-Aid being drunk byspendthrift politicians and theKeynesian intellectuals whoenable them. Part of the confusionregarding our currenteconomy is how recessions aredefined by journalists and officials. The conventional mediadefinition of a recession istwo or more successive quarterswith GDP contraction. Asingle uptick in GDP, therefore, signals recovery accordingthis way of thinking. The National Bureau ofEconomic Research (NBER)has been given the official taskof dating recessions. TheNBER defines recession as aperiod of declining, not low, economic activity. We could, therefore, have an increase ingross domestic product andincome from a very low troughand still live in an economythat is much more depressedthan the previous peak andcould remain such for a long, long time. This is what we arecurrently experiencing. Sincethe last recession began inDecember 2007, economic activityimproved in June 2009,leading to NBER’s declarationthat the recession had officiallyended. Yet it could be arguedtoday that the economy continuesto perform far below2007 levels. Our so-called “recovery” isthe slowest following any recessionsince at least before1970. Employment recoveryfollowing the recession remainsthe worst following anyrecession since the Great Depression. In fact, our economicperformance is worse thanJapan’s during its lost decade. After teasing us with significantlyhigher rates ofgrowth last year, this year realFarnam Weight BuilderThis product is available at...CRESCENTCOOPERATIVE ASSN.GDP has slowed to a crawl. Why this manic-depressiveeconomic behavior? I wouldargue that much of the confusionpertains to problems withGDP itself. In the first place, it is hardto know which GDP numbersto trust because they are oftencalculated using inaccuratedata and are subject to perpetualrevision. Additionally,GDP includes large amountsof government spending, which by nature does not reflectreal productive activity.Such spending is not fundedby the voluntary purchases bythose who earned the money, but by taxes forcibly takenfrom them. The governmentdoes not produce, but ratherconsumes wealth by taxation, borrowing and monetary inflation.Consequently, whenGDP increases due to highergovernment spending, thisindicates less private productionand signals that theeconomy is getting worse, notbetter.Recent components of realGDP tell exactly this story.Private investment is significantlylower now than it wasat its pre-recession peak, makingup a smaller percentage ofGDP than it did before themeltdown. Governmentspending, however, increasedsteadily through the middleof 2010 and still claims a largerpercentage of GDP now thanit did before the recession.Built on such a sandy foundation, any economic expansionis unsustainable, becauseit not rooted in private investmentfunded by voluntarysavings. It is no wonder thatanalysts like those surveyedby Thomson Reuters expectdepressed corporate earningsin the upcoming quarter. Realrecovery is the product ofmore capital wisely investedby entrepreneurs. Three yearsafter the recession, we stillhave less private investmentand more government consumption.Government macroeconomicstatistics such as GDPor gross domestic income arenot a scientific measurementof economic well-being. Bewareof equating GDP withthe economy and increasedGDP with prosperity. There isgood reason to think that whatthe NBER calls our recovery ismuch more apparent than real.— Dr. Shawn Ritenour is aprofessor of economics at GroveCity College, contributor to TheCenter for Vision & Values, andauthor of “Foundations of Economics:A Christian View.”© 2012 by The Center forVision & Values at Grove CityCollege.
