ApplicationsIntroductionHydor understands the farmers balance for enough air volume at a high enoughvelocity to ensure a positive response from the dairy herd in the form of increasedmilk yield and greater breeding efficiency.There . are endless approaches to the mechanical ventilationdesign in dairy farming. For example, the precise number andlocation of fans required in a building would depend uponfactors such as the density, construction, utilisation and localclimatic conditions.However, the components of the ventilation system shouldaccommodate winter and summer conditions, namely;(i)A continuous minimum air exchange – This is certainlyrequired to remove the moisture constantly created bydairy cows, particularly during the colder, sub-freezingmonths of the year.The drawings outlined in this brochure are merely intendedto illustrate some typical approaches to providing ventilationsolutions to dairy farmers, whether for calf rearing, milkingparlours or bull housing.It must be stressed there are many ways in which theventilation criteria for you, the dairy farmer can be met, andit should not be assumed the examples in this brochure arethe only ones - Indeed, with more than 47 years experience inagricultural ventilation, we know a thing or two about farmersventilation requirements for livestock – Our skill is matchingyour dairy ventilation needs with our extensive fan engineeringcapabilities.(ii) Higher air exchange rates and air velocity across the cowsduring the hotter summer weather to remove excessiveheat from the cows.8
onsCow Cubicle HousingCOW CUBICLE HOUSINGFigure 1.HV FANSPASSAGEPASSAGEFEEDING LANEFigure 2.With such a diversity in livestock housing arrangements, fromtwo lines of cows facing each other, to several lines across thecow cubicle, these buildings are often large open areas whichrequire air movement to assist cooling of animals in warm,hot, humid weather where slatted or open sides do not allowsufficient air to pass through the building. Fans would normallybe suspended from the roof above the centre line of the dairyherd facing each other, angled slightly downwards to blow airacross the animals. Hydor would particularly recommend theuse of our HV Belt Drive fans for larger cow cubicle areas wherelarge air volumes are required.Figure 2, depicts a large cow cubicle building. Air is drawnin naturally through slatted sections at the side of the farmbuilding.Large diameter HV belt driven box fans are installed at the oneend of the building, which draws fresh air from outside, forcingair throughout the building by blowing onto the animals forcow comfort. Heat generated within the building from theambient temperature, combined with the animals is dissipatedthrough the open ridges at the top of the building.Figure 1. illustrates a typical medium to large farm buildingaccommodating dairy cows with feeding and individual restingcubicles. Air is drawn in through the slatted Yorkshire Boarding.The cows face each other with walls between them. The cowsare located in open stalls with steel framing.Holding AreasWhere there are a large number of cows standing in a congestedarea for anything between 30 minutes and up to an hour ormore before milking, ventilation and cooling of the animals iscritical, primarily as a dairy cow’s body temperature will rapidlyrise to a level that culminates in discomfort. The importance ofmoving large volumes of air over the cows with fans in this areais paramount to the success at the milking stage itself.It is widely recommended by Hydor that the use of anevaporative cooling system, which can be mounted above thecows in the holding area, combined with the forced airflow fromthe fans will, to a great extent, enhance herd cooling during thewarmer weather. Fans should be mounted above the cows, butdirecting the airflow away from the milking parlour, positionedso they blow the air downwards and over the cow’s backs.Hydor can recommend a wide variety of fan selectionsdependant upon the physical area required.9
ApplicationsCalf HousingThese are either small purpose built units, but more often, poorly sited buildingconversions which require the addition of mechanical ventilation to provide acontinuous supply of fresh air into the calf housing.Calf pens should provide clean, hygienic conditions, which minimise the risk of calfdisease, promote positive growth rates, in a warm, dry, draught free building.By adding mechanical fan ventilation, this can overcome potential airborne diseasessuch as pneumonia in calves, thereby reducing mortality rates, as well as reductionsin veterinary bills. One of the most effective methods to mechanically ventilate acalf house is by installing a fan with a polythene duct air distribution system.Figure 3. highlights two air circulation installations in a calf house that providescontinuous air movement, either by the use of ‘Turbulator’ air circulation fans,located centrally in the calf house, or by the HWF wall mounted fans.Figure 4. depicts a typical installation for calf housing where Hydor HE Fans areinstalled through the wall of the building, plastic ductwork is fitted directly to thefan, thereby directing the airflow into the calf house. The polythene duct has holescut into it along its length which enables the air to be dispersed evenly down thebuilding. The precise length of ductwork, and the number and size of holes will determine the precise Hydor fan to be selected.By locating fans at the gable end of the building, this delivers fresh air from the outside of the building, which then forces the staleair outside.Hydor’s range of speed controllers ensures ventilation rates can be adjusted according to ambient temperatures. Hydor HWFA wallmounted fans can also be used by directing air around the calf house, providing positive air movement throughout the building.Larger fan selections are beneficial where calf numbers increase, costing very little extra to install, providing greater air throughput, andwith the provision of a controller it can be turned down to meet daily ventilation requirements.Hydor suggest farmers keep fans running throughout the year, apart from extreme weather conditions, this benefits the calves bymaintaining positive air movement, ensuring a draught free, not too stuffy environment.CALF HOUSINGFigure 4.TURBULATORWALLMOUNTEDHWF10Figure 3.
onsBeef Cattle & Bull HousingBULL HOUSINGFigure 5.CEILING FANSFIGURE XYZFigure 6.The housing requirements for beef cattle are primarily individualstalls or pens, often plastered rooms for additional cleanliness– with bull confinement a pre-requisite to overcome aggressionthat may otherwise exist between animals. Many existing farmbuildings developed to cater for these animals suffer from‘still air’, which often leads to respiratory problems amongst beefcattle without proper ventilation.In order to overcome these issues, Hydor would advise the sameprinciples as calf ventilation be applied, although more positiveventilation would be required due to the size of the animals.The use of Hydor HE fans or Turbulators where ductwork isinstalled would compliment natural ventilation within the building.Where buildings house both beef cattle and calves, the air shouldbe forced away from the calves towards the beef cattle and notthe other way around.Figure 5 and Figure 6 are a typical illustration of where bulls areindividually housed in bull pens, and air is drawn in naturallythrough slatted sections from the sides of the building. The bullshave air circulated across them through the use of HCF ceilingfans, which enhances bull comfort, as well as benefiting bythickening the bulls coat.11
ApplicationsMilking ParloursIn terms of importance, the milking parlour needs particular attention and thoughtwhen a ventilation system is required – The importance is determined by the factthat farming staff, who may be milking a dairy herd for anything between nineor more hours a day, will experience quite different environmental comfortas opposed to dairy cows. Although farm worker comfort is imperativein sustaining milking productivity, combined with optimum employeeperformance, the ventilation system within the parlour needs to satisfy the‘cow comfort’ requirements first and foremost.A large number of milking parlours do turn out to be particularlyhot and humid throughout the summer months, which means theyare appealing to large numbers of flies, whilst it can also be veryunsettling for dairy workers. In addition to this, with the higher summertemperatures, each animal is probably producing in the region of 1 kWor more in heat.Although most milking parlours will be ventilated naturally, theadditional heat still has to be removed in an effective way. By introducingcarefully selected ventilation and air circulation fans, Hydor products notonly remove excessive heat, they also enable evaporative cooling from wetsurfaces in the parlour. In addition to this, the fans will significantly reducethe number of flies attracted to the parlour, since they dislike high air speeds,which in turn means the cows are more at ease in the parlour.Evaporative cooling systems are of particular benefit wheninstalled along a ventilation system within milking parlours inpreventing flies and insects which can encourage cows to kickand dislodge milking equipment.Hydor would typically recommend those installations whereceiling height allows, to fit ‘Turbulator’ air circulation fans, whichcan be suspended from the ceiling at a height of approximately2 metres higher than the pit floor in the parlour.In an ideal world, Turbulators should be located (where possible)near to the doorway, which means fresh air can be brought infrom the outside of the building, thereby blowing down the pitat cow udder level. It may well be that two or more Turbulatorfans are required for milking parlours that are wider or longer,and the requirement for ductwork may be an additionalconsideration.Where the ceiling height may be restricted, then the use ofHydor HWF wall mounted fans would be recommended, whichcan be mounted along the outside parlour wall, thereby blowingair across the parlour and in the course of the prevailing winds.12

ive CoolIvy House Dairy Farm, Nottinghamshire, UKThe Hydor evaporative cooling system has been successfullyinstalled at Ivy House farm, who specialise in producingorganic milk.Installed within the innovative 36 bay rotating milking parlourand holding areas, owner Mark Hornbuckle comments:“The cooling capacity of the system is excellent. The herd ismilking better and is far more comfortable. Moreover, ourproblem with flies in the parlour has been dramatically reduced.”The system was installed by Hydor, as shown in Figure 7, withplans currently in place to extend (as marked in red) to thefeeding lines within the cubicle areas.As well as the Hydor Evaporative Cooling System, the farm hasinstalled eight Hydor 1250mm belt drive air movement fans inthe cubicle sheds.
