Offering grand style and the latest comforts within an extensive 200-acre estate, Bastide de Lavande deserves any manner of

superlatives. Built in 1746, this superb Haut Provencal retreat was once a stronghold of high-ranking officers in the Franco-Spanish

war. From 1834 to 2002 the property was owned by the same prominent family of this fascinating area between the Luberon and

Recently restored with loving attention to every authentic detail, this splendid mansion can now accommodate up to 16 adults and

12 children, and provides masses of living space. Lots of room to cook for a crowd in the kitchen with its restaurant-sized range, and

for them to eat in the adjoining jardin d’hiver, where the original wood-fired bread oven functions as grill and barbecue and the tables

can seat 28, or on the shaded terrace just outside.

There’s a dining room for more formal feasts plus a library, a ‘petit salon’ with comfortable seating, and a ‘grand salon’ looking onto

the gardens and the lavender fields beyond.

Upstairs two great kids’ dormitories have been created, though that’s a dull word for two fun rooms with some of the beds up on the

mezzanine level, and their own bathroom facilities. On the grown-up side each bedroom has country antique furniture and generous

sized beds with traditional Provencal hand-stitched covers.

The guest house/pool house nearby includes a summer kitchen and a large covered dining/sitting area with tables for 20 and a music

system, a perfect retreat for those moments when the sun beds round the pool get too hot, or for a cooling glass at the end of the

With its choice of living spaces, two large kids’ bedrooms, baby equipment, tennis court, heated swimming pool and many other

diversions for young people, the Bastide is the perfect choice for large family groups. It’s also an ideal base for an active vacation

of biking, hiking and exploring the Luberon to the west or the Alps of Provence to the east, and for simply walking the surrounding

hills, which are heavy with the perfume of lavender, sage and thyme. One thing you can be sure of, your stay at Bastide de Lavande

will provide all you need for a truly memorable vacation.
