The 2008 Department of Medicine Annual Update &Clinical Learning Day is designed to update members of theDepartment of Medicine in key advances in InternalMedicine and its subspecialties in the preceding year.Advances in management of venous thromboembolismand anticoagulation will also be discussed followingpublication of the 8th Consensus Recommendations onAntithrombotic Therapy by the American College of ChestPhysicians.Upon completion of this activity, participants will be ableto:Articulate key advances in internal medicine and itssubspecialties relevant to real-life clinical managementof patients in 2007 and 2008Identify two or more advances in each of the medicalsubspecialties which can be applied directly to the careof patients presenting with relevant illnessesReiterate key changes in anticoagulation managementas outlined in the 2008 American College of ChestPhysicians guidelinesIdentify how venous thrombembolism is diagnosed andwhich anticoagulant medications are initiated andmaintained in patientsRecognize key advancements in the latest evidencebasedmedicine for management of asthma andChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease with steroidmedications, including clinical scenarios in whichsteroid doses should be increased or decreasedRecite and utilize decision support systems foranticoagulation and asthma care located within theClinical Programs section of Intermountain.net and theHELP2 informatics systemIntermountain Healthcare Continuing Medical Education (CME) is accredited byAccreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuingmedical education for physicians.Intermountain Healthcare CME designates this educational activity for a maximum of11.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).
