WHY USE MARTYRANODES?<strong>Anode</strong>s are inexpensive which means itis important to protect your boat witha quality product. <strong>Martyr</strong> TM anodes arepressure diecast and manufacturedto strict quality standards throughan ISO 9001 Quality ManagementSystem. Every anode is UPC barcoded.In addition, each alloy is guaranteedto be manufactured to the latestUS Military Alloy Specification andis chemically tested regularly in ourin-house labs to ensure consistency.Poorly manufactured anodes maycontain high levels of impuritiessuch as iron, which will leaveyou unprotected. <strong>Martyr</strong> <strong>Anode</strong>smanufacturers all 3 alloys for the 3main water environments. Not allanodes are created equal so to be surebuy genuine <strong>Martyr</strong> TM <strong>Anode</strong>s.CORROSION WILL OCCURIN ALL TYPES OF WATERWITH DRAMATIC EFFECTMetals have different electrochemicalpotentials when in contact with oneanother and form Galvanic cells. Themetal with a lower potential in thegalvanic cell will be anodic and willcorrode. The same effect can occurin areas of different electrochemicalpotential in a single piece of metalsuch as a steel plate. Any craft mooredand operating in fresh, salt or brackishwater is at risk from corrosion and theeffects can be costly.Corrosion on Steel & Aluminumvessels can be identified as eitherareas of localized pitting to the hullplate, rudders, bilge keels etc. orless obviously in the form of generalwastage of the hull plating oftenoccurring below the paint coating.Pitting can lead to the completepenetration of the hull below thewaterline. General wastage of thesteel can be just as critical, weakeningthe hull and necessitating expensivere-plating.Corrosion on Aluminum vessels is alsogenerally in the form of localizedpitting to the hull plate, rudders,bilge keels and particularly in wayof weld seams. Pitting can lead tothe complete penetration of the hullbelow the waterline necessitatingexpensive re-plating.On wood and GRP vessels the areasof concern are principally the sterngear i.e. The propellers, shafts,shaft brackets, stern tubes andrudders which are expensive toreplace and vital to the vessel, thefailure of a propeller or rudder couldhave disastrous consequences. Theeffects of corrosion can vary frompitting of propellers and shafts tothe decomposition of the alloy ofpropeller. The failure of something assmall and inexpensive as a split pin canresult in the loss of the propeller.Stray current leakage is quite oftencited as the cause of corrosion on alltypes of vessel however more oftenthan not the problem can be tracedto a galvanic action. Stray currentleakage is the action of electricalcurrent from an external powersource such as a battery or shorepower supply which because of someelectrical system fault on board thevessel passes out through the hull or afitting in the hull and flows through thewater causing “Electrolytic” corrosion.Stray current leakage is usually aresult of damage or wear to the wiringsystem or poor installation of wiring orelectrical equipment.WHAT CAN BE DONE TOPREVENT CORROSION?The selection of materials is of primeimportance in the construction ofcraft. Generally naval architects andboat builders ensure that they selectmetals which are as far as possiblecompatible to each other and whenthis is not possible metals must beisolated from one another. There willalways be occasions when fittingsor steel-work require replacementor repair and it is important thatwhen this is done attention is paidto the same criteria. In particularensure that fastenings and split pinsare compatible and of the highestquality. The paint system on anyboat is an important first barrieragainst corrosion. Seek advice fromthe paint manufacturers for theirrecommendations on the mostappropriate coating system andfollow the application instructionscompletely. Ensure that a good anticorrosiveprimer is applied if antifoulingis to be used. When using acopper based anti-fouling none of thepaint must be applied directly to baremetal surfaces.Vegetable oil based paints, althoughfar less widely available than in thepast, should not be used with cathodicprotection systems as the paint tendsto saponify.The correct installation of electrics ona boat will reduce the possibility ofstray current leakage and the followingactions are recommended.• Use only high grade insulated wiringof suitable capacity. Undersized wireswill cause resistance and consequentvoltage drop.• Clip or support all wires at suitableintervals to prevent fatigue andeventual fracture.3


• Use only corrosion resistant terminalsand connectors and make sure that allare clean and tight.• Attach only the main battery leads tobattery terminals.• Fit an isolation switch in the batterycircuit.• Ensure that all battery circuits arecorrectly fused.• Keep all wiring, connections andjunction boxes above the bilge area andother areas likely to become wet.Make sure that when fitting additionalequipment the work is carried out inaccordance with the manufacturer’sinstructions. The polarity of connectionsshould be correct and each circuit mustbe correctly fused.Electrical and electronic work is bestcarried out by a qualified marineelectrician.Ongoing maintenance on your boat isessential. Metal work, paint coatingsand electrical installations all requireregular inspection. In particular youshould inspect the wind and water linearea if owning a steel vessel. This areais particularly vulnerable because it isoften prone to mechanical damage butderives no protection from an anodesystem being above the water line.WHAT IS CATHODICPROTECTION?Cathodic protection is anelectrochemical process which haltsthe natural reaction (corrosion) ofmetals in a particular environment bysuperimposing an electrochemical cellmore powerful than the corrosion cell.Sacrificial <strong>Anode</strong>s are fitted or bonded tothe metal to be protected which in turnas it has a greater electrical potentialthan the anode material becomescathodic and causes the anode to wasteinstead of itself. In a correctly installed<strong>Martyr</strong> Cathodic Protection System theonly corrosion occurs to the sacrificialanode which is replaceable. The numberand size of anodes is determined by thetype of material and the surface areabeing protected.The term bonding refers to theconnection of the anode to a remotemetal component such as the propellershaft of rudder stock and it should beremembered that the integrity of thebonding is critical to the effectiveness ofthe cathodic protection system.Several factors determine the type ofcathodic protection system fitted. Firstlythe environment in which the vessel isoperating, secondly the size and typeof construction and finally the length oftime that the vessel is likely to be afloatbefore the next maintenance slipping.FIT THE CORRECT ANODEMATERIAL FOR THE WATERSYOUR VESSEL IS OPERATING INAs a general rule owners should fit theanodes suitable for the environment theymost regularly berth in and the followingtable provides a useful guide:Salt Water: Fit Zinc (<strong>Martyr</strong> I) orAluminum <strong>Anode</strong>sBrackish Water: Fit Aluminum <strong>Anode</strong>s(<strong>Martyr</strong> II)Fresh Water: Fit Magnesium <strong>Anode</strong> (<strong>Martyr</strong> III)Some vessels will from time to timemove between salt and fresh water,others are berthed within marinas andbehind tidal barriers where the wateris enclosed and likely to be brackishor even virtually fresh. Owners mustbe aware of the effects that this mayhave on their boats and fit the correctcathodic protection system to avoidcorrosion.Not all anodes are suitable for everyenvironment, for example the surfaceof a zinc or aluminum anode will if leftin fresh water for some time becomecovered with an off white crust of oxidewhich effectively seals the anode andstops it working even when returned tosalt water. Zinc <strong>Anode</strong>s suffer a similarproblem even in brackish conditionswhereas Aluminum will continue tooperate effectively in river estuariesand other areas of brackish waterindefinitely. The consequences of thispassivity of the anode are that the nextmost anodic item within the anodebonding system will start to sacrificeitself which could of course be veryserious.It is therefore very important to checkZinc and Aluminum anodes after any tripsinto fresh water and if necessary cleanoff or change the anodes. Should a vesselmove into fresh water for more thantwo weeks <strong>Martyr</strong> recommends that analternative anode system is used suitablefor fresh water situations.Magnesium <strong>Anode</strong>s on the other handhave a much higher driving voltagethan zinc or aluminum making themhighly suitable for use in fresh water,they will however become very activein salt water where they will probablyonly last a matter of months. Protectedsurfaces can build up a layer of off whitecalcareous deposit which will be difficultto remove.Magnesium anodes are not designed forprolonged use in sea water and if youare taking your boat into a salt waterlocation for more than seven days(Fourteen days in any one year) youshould consider changing the anodes.*Reprinted courtesy ofMG Duff International*4
