Welcome to CongressDear Colleagues,We are delighted to welcome you all to the joint BSAVA (NI), SPVS andBVNA Congress 2008 taking place once again at the superb Slieve DonardResort and Spa, one of Northern Ireland’s most popular and luxurious hotels,over the May Bank Holiday weekend (May 23rd - 25th, 2008).This year we are pleased to present you with a wide range of scientific andthought-provoking lectures from our three distinguished Congress partners.BSAVA (NI) will present on the topics of ophthalmology and dermatologyand provide updates on new developments and theories. SPVS are pursuingthe theme of “Happiness” and their speakers will reveal how you canovercome the stresses and strains of life as a modern practitioner. Last butnot least, BVNA will deliver a fascinating presentation on alternativetherapies and wellbeing.To accompany the formal programme, we are also staging a fantastic varietyof family activities, ranging from golf at the world famous Royal County Downgolf course and mountain biking down the scenic Mourne Mountains to laserclay pigeon shooting and “rock” climbing at the hotel. So why not make theevent one for all the family to attend? Put on your dancing shoes for Friday’sfun and relaxed Salsa evening – the dance craze that has swept across theworld from Latin America. Our Gala Dinner on the Saturday evening will beanother highlight of the weekend with a delicious menu, magician, and musicby Brazil that is sure to get you onto the dance floor, as well as the presentationof the Northern Ireland <strong>Veterinary</strong> Nurse of the Year Awards. Sundaymorning includes our Keynote Lecture with Jim Wight, an accomplishedraconteur who will regale us with anecdotes and memories of his father,James Herriot, arguably the world’s favourite vet.This year’s Commercial Exhibition will be the largest and most vibrant yetand will provide an excellent opportunity to explore what’s on offer and topick up some fantastic bargains.Northern Ireland is renowned for its friendliness and hospitality and this longBank Holiday weekend promises to be a highlight of the veterinary calendar.We look forward to seeing you at the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa for aninformative and fun Congress 2008 in a stunning setting.SpeakersPip Boydell qualified from the RVC in 1984 and spent two years in the R(D)SVS surgerydepartment and a year in referral practice in London before completing a residency in veterinaryophthalmology at the RVC. In 1990 he co-founded the Animal Medical Centre Referral Services inManchester, the first dedicated small animal referral centre in the UK and the first to have anon-site brain scanner. Pip is a neuro-ophthalmologist with interests including feline herpetic eyedisease, treatment of brain tumours, and abnormalities of the pupil. He has over 200 publishedpapers and abstracts in veterinary and medical journals.Steve Shaw is a labrador owning vet from the Midlands, currently working in the busy dermatologyclinic of the Rutland House Referrals Hospital in St Helens. Prior to this Steve worked at theAnimal Health Trust in Newmarket for 15 years, completing the RCVS Certificate in small animaldermatology in 1992, a PhD investigating the clinical features, heritability and immune responses incanine atopic dermatitis, and graduating to run the dermatology unit and intern programme. Steveis the National Dermatology Advisor for Guide Dogs in the UK.Joe Griffin is a research psychologist with graduate and post-graduate degrees from the LSE. Heis Director of Studies for MindFields College in the UK, and has many years of experience both inpsychotherapeutic practice and in training psychotherapists. He works at the leading edge ofskills-based therapy, research and practice. He is also a co-developer of the human givensapproach to psychology and behaviour. Joe is widely recognised as one of the most informed andentertaining speakers on human behaviour.Des Rice originally worked in veterinary practice, veterinary investigation, nutrition research andthen, for 20 years, as a consultant in nutritional optimisation. During this time he advised many topbusinesses and served on several representative bodies and government committees; this giveshim an in depth knowledge of how both public and private sector organizations operate. On sellinghis business three years ago he became a qualified Executive and Life Coach. He now coachesindividuals, executives and teams to take control of events in their life and work to improveeffectiveness, efficiency and quality of life.Siobhan Menzies qualified from the R(D)SVS in 1990,and has worked in mixed and small animalpractice. In 2002 she established 'Holisticpet' to focus on the complementary therapies,homeopathy and acupuncture. She is the first Irish vet to complete the certificate course in CanineRehabilitation with the University of Tennessee. She is a member of the <strong>British</strong> <strong>Association</strong> ofHomeopathic <strong>Veterinary</strong> Surgeons and a council member of the <strong>Association</strong> of <strong>British</strong> <strong>Veterinary</strong>Acupuncturists with a special interest in chronic pain management in animals.Anne O’Reilly graduated from University College, Dublin in 1984 and has worked mainly with smallanimals in a mixed practice in Armagh. Her long-standing interest in homeopathy led to her being thefirst vet in Northern Ireland to complete the qualification of MF HOM from the Faculty of Homeopathy inLondon. She integrates homeopathic treatments and therapies with conventional practice and takesreferrals of chronic unresponsive conventional therapy cases.Mickey Parker was inspired to take up the revolutionary Tellington T Touch technique by a televisionprogramme! She completed three years Companion Animal Training some years ago and now hasmany private clients including a number of dog trainers, and also runs workshops to pass on thetechnique to others.Nuala McKeever started her career behind the cameras at BBC Northern Ireland as a researcher. Itwasn't long before her talents as a natural comedienne and writer were spotted and a career in front ofthe cameras beckoned. Today, in addition to her television and writing commitments, Nuala worksregularly with Des Rice and helps to bring life and humour to challenging topics.Matthew Morgan graduated from University of Melbourne and worked in mixed practice and smallanimal practice before joining the Vets Now Emergency and Critical Care team as senior veterinarysurgeon.
