A proper cost economics need to be worked out to understand the needs for
the ter tiary treatment as systems that may seem to be more on capital cost
may prove to be wor thy considering the life cycle cost. MBR systems may
sometimes be economical compared to other treatment systems depending
on the end use of the treated sewage as MBR’s can eliminate Dual Media
Filter, Activated carbon Filters, Filter feed tanks, Filter feed pumps with a small
incremental capital costs when compared with Non membrane treatment
systems.
Recycling Or Further Treatment-
The requirement and need for ter tiary system may vary depending on the
end use options. A softener may be used as a par t of the ter tiary system to
use treated water as a cooling tower make up water. Similarly ultra filtration

system may be recommended if the treated sewage is to be fed into a Reverse
Osmosis (RO) system for fur ther treatment or if the treated water is to be
reused in toilet flushing applications. Although water reuse guidelines were
developed for protection of health it is evident that they are based on the control
of conventional parameters such as pH, BOD, TSS & pathogenic organisms.
It is not impossible to achieve treated water of high quality by combining
conventional wastewater treatment with advanced techniques like UF/RO,
chemical oxidation etc.
Recycling Water Reuse Options Are As Follows-
• All water uses other than potable use
• Irrigation of parks, playgrounds, schoolyards etc
• Cemeteries, freeway landscapes
• Ornamental plants for commercial use
• Food crops that are above ground and not contacted
by reclaimed water
• Flushing toilets & urinals
• Supply for commercial & public laundries for clothing
• Industrial broiler feed
• Fire fighting etc.
