We estimate supply capacityavailable on a weekly basis was 21,500 TEU during2012. The Irish lo/lo container market had a total of14 independent companies providing direct servicesduring 2012, up from 13 in the previous year. Maerskcommenced a new direct deepsea weekly service intoCork from Central America. Otherwise, the market sharebetween operators remained relatively unchanged. On face value, the supply/demand picture wouldsuggest the market was moving in equilibrium whichwas certainly not the case as the distribution of thesupply is uneven, with diverging factors for the shortseaand deepsea container market. Shortsea companiesconcentrating on intra-Europe services yet again facedthe ongoing Euro-Zone crisis that had not only rolledon but appeared to deepen over the second half of theyear. Demand for long haul deepsea destinations, suchas Asia, South Africa, and both North and Latin America, remained relatively firm, although in some cases growthhas slowed. Deepsea lines reported record growth inexports of waste paper/recyclables which, despite beingof low value, make a significant contribution to vesselutilization. Exports of food and agri products, especiallyto Asia, also performed well. The use of vessel sharing agreements [VSA] in theshortsea and feeder sector enabled operators tomaintain service levels and improve utilization whilstalso sharing the costs of maintaining vessels/serviceswhich otherwise could not be provided. Eucon and BGFreightline continued to operate the largest VSA, whilea number of operators have rotated schedules in orderto carry empty containers to ports where imbalances aregreatest.Irish MarketGraph 14CEstimated Weekly Capacity in the Irish Market35,00030,00025,00020,00015,00010,0005,00002006 2007 2008 2009 2010 20112012As previously mentioned, the ongoing, albeit smaller, declines in import volumes contributed to a furtherincrease in demand for shipping lines to repositionempty containers from the UK/Continent to Ireland. Asa result, there was a 14% increase in empty containersshipped to Ireland last year, totalling 65,123 TEU ascompared to 57,050 in 2011. There were 41,094 TEUempty containers imported to the Republic of Irelandand 24,029 TEU containers imported into NorthernIreland. A decade ago import to export ratios werealmost 3:1, primarily as a result of high volumes of lowvalue imports from Asia, however the number of ladenimports during 2012 almost identically matched ladenexports 1:1 per quarter.Source: IMDO27
