Pastor’s Corner...To update you on CDA, we are ahead of last year atthis time. Total raised is $150,521 with 471 gifts. That is21.71% of the parish and an average gift of $319.58. Thankyou for your generosity. We are off to a good start but wehave a ways to go. It is not just reaching a goal. It is helpingas many as we can. Think about it and pray about it.The most important thing in life is to be a person ofintegrity, and to live rightly. Build on the following pillars:1. You are not a rat, so you don’t have to behave like one.You are a human being and a child of God. The mostimportant thing about you is your capacity for goodness.2. If you raise your status, make sure you raise yourself too. What sense does it make if you work hard at advancingyour career, but don’t work on your character? What does itmatter for you to be always in the limelight if your soul is indarkness? What does it matter if your bank account isbulging while your heart is empty?3. Take care of your conscience, and listen to it. If you livewithout a conscience, can you still call yourself a humanbeing?4. Do not be afraid of sacrifice. If your sole aim is to grab asmany pleasures as possible out of life, you are doing aterrible injustice to yourself. Without sacrifice and struggleyou can never grow up and discover who you are.5. Be faithful to your promises. To live loosely is to discoverone day, sooner or later, that you haven’t anchored yourboat to anything solid. When the storm strikes, you will findthat you are alone and adrift. Fidelity is a beautiful thing. Itis a precious stone, a true gem.6. Do not be ashamed of your beliefs and values. Withoutbeliefs and convictions, you are no better than a shipwithout a rudder or a port of destination. The essential thing is to do thewill of God. It is not enough to merelylisten to the words of Christ. We have toact on them, to live them. Otherwise, weare building on sand.People may think they arereligious and pious while failing hopelesslyto live by the teaching of Christ. Suchpeople are building on sand. Their housewill not last. Those who base their lives on the teachings ofChrist are able to withstand all assaults, temptations andcrises.A guy goes to the doctor’s office and the doctor says,“I haven’t seen you in a while.”The guy says, “I know, I’ve been sick!”Doctor, you’ve got to help me; I can’t stop thinkingI’m a goat.I see. And how long have you had this problem?Ever since I was a kid!“I think I’m a moth.”“I think you need a psychiatrist.”“I know.”“So why did you come in here to the gas station?”(Here it comes …)“The light was on!”Have a great week. Take Jesus for a ride this week.He wants to get out more.God bless! Fr. PatReflection Corner...The downturn in the housing market has taken its toll on plenty of people. From real estate agents to developers, from mortgagebankers to members of the construction trades, the lack of home building has severely curtailed economic activity in all of theseemployment sectors. The questionable practices of bundling, repackaging, and trading mortgage assets by various financial institutions aswell as outright fraud on the part of some buyers and sellers led to a banking crisis that threatened to swamp the financial industry anddestroy it much like the house that was built on sand that is described in today's Gospel. Many smaller banks and credit unions, whichcontinued to own the mortgages they wrote, found themselves in the enviable position of having solid assets. They were never in anydanger of failing despite the buffets of the economic storm. For the most part, the financial institutions that avoided trouble during the crisis lived by strong values that had been inculcatedinto the fiber of their existence. The boards of directors of these institutions were not going to go out on a limb and try to find quick, easymoney. They may not have been glamorous investments, but their worth was proven over time. These are the banks and credit unions thatmore easily survived.Holding on to solid values in life can help individuals survive as well. In the Gospel, Jesus talks about those who hear His wordsand then put them into practice. Taking the values that Jesus teaches and making them a part of everyday life ensures our connection toHim. When we think or act with the values of Jesus in the forefront of our minds we build a firm foundation as a structure for our lives.Forgiveness, love, a strong faith, compassion toward others, patience, a desire for justice, mercy, and a spirit of prayer are strongfoundation blocks for a holy life.Scripture Readings...Sun 3/6 Dt 11:18, 26-28, 32/Rom 3:21-25, 28/Mt 7:21-27Mon 3/ Tb 1:3; 2:1b-8/Mk 12:1-12Tues 3/8 Tb 2:9-14/Mk 12:13-17Wed 3/9 Jl 2:12-18/2 Cor 5:20---6:2/Mt 6:1-6, 16-18Thu 3/10 Dt 30:15-20/Lk 9:22-25Fri 3/11 Is 58:1-9a/Mt 9:14-15Sat. 3/12 Is 58:9b-14/Lk 5:27-32Sun 3/13 Gn 2:7-9; 3:1-7/Rom 5:12-19www.blessedsacramentscotts.org March 6, 2011 │ 3
