4 – WESTMOUNT INDEPENDENT – April 6-7, 2010Letters to the EditorClean up timeI have a suggestion for all you dog owners(especially the large dogs) who do notclean up after your dogs in the winter.Well, guess what? You can clean it upnow that all the snow has gone.Sue Khan, Montrose Ave.A short history of ‘nay’[Regarding “Asking for too much” byDavid Schachter (March 30, p. 4),] perhapsa short history lesson would explain myuse of the term “naysayers” concerningthe arena/pool project. The previous Westmount council originallyproposed two large rinks and an outsidepool. Those opposed to this proposalbasically said “no” to this project, thus theterm “naysayers,” which does not imply inany way that they aren’t “rational,” justthat they were against all of the originalproposals. In response to these and other communityconcerns, the past administrationdecided to pass the project on to the newcouncil. The wait for the new arena/pool projectwill soon be over. Mayor Peter Trent promisesto deliver an information package inthe next few days. This document will address“a full rationale and explanation” tosupport the new design. The proposal will include “cost projections, tax implications, other calculationsand the results of traffic, user needs andoperating cost studies” (March 23, p. 1).I believe that Mayor Trent and his committeewill present a design and supportingdocumentation that addresses all ofthe issues that have caused controversy inthe past.I’m putting my trust in the committee’sanalysis and will support its proposal, evenif it turns out to be one and a half rinks.I hope that all of Westmount will pulltogether and support our mayor and hiscommittee and let the construction begin.Peter Naylor, Abbott Ave.Chin retractsI wish to retract letters written to theWestmount Independent in February andMarch, 2010.Thank you.Stephen Chin, Sherbrooke St.ElectronicIndependentsavailableEnjoy the Indie at supper timeon Tuesdays!Sign up by writing us:office@westmountindependent.com.New SAQ to allow both anglo papersLook for the Indie this summer at thenew Victoria Village SAQ (Société des alcoolsdu Québec) outlet.“It will be welcome,” spokesperson IsabelleMerizzi told the Independent onMarch 31.The story has garnered a fair amount ofmedia attention, and Catherine Handfieldof La Presse broke the news on March 29(“Le SAQ de Westmount distribuera desjournaux anglophones”) that the newSherbrooke SAQ outlet (to open this summerwhere Hogg’s used to be) will makeboth the Independent and the Examineravailable to customers.“Le SAQ n’a pas à choisir,” said Merizzito La Presse. After interviewing the branch’s manager, the Independent initially reported thatthe Victoria Ave. SAQ had banished allfree-distribution English papers. Later, theSAQ headquarters explained that localmanagers were being told that only onelocal paper should be chosen for distributionat each outlet and that local managementhad chosen the Examiner.Interim branchBefore the move to the old Hogg location, the Victoria SAQ will temporarilymove to a south-side Sherbrooke St. locationbetween Prince Albert and Claremont.According to a poster in its window, this interim branch opens on April 28.Hogg is scheduled to open at the currentSAQ site on June 1. In practice, competitivenesswill often win the day and, inturn, a lot of kids get pushed out or quit, regardless of the sport in question. However, Westmount’s Roslyn elementaryschool has been running ahockey program for two seasons now thathas stayed true to that original concept.“Our philosophy,” said physical educationteacher Mark Sokalski, “remains toprovide a non-competitive, instructionaland highly-enjoyable setting in which anyinterested student can learn a bit moreabout some of the fundamental skills ofthe game of hockey, and at the same timebuild potentially lasting relationships withtheir peers who they see in their classroomsevery day at Roslyn.”“Our program is not about winning. It’s about getting as many kids to participateas possible, building a core group ofyoung players, and creating a sense ofpride and sportsmanship for RoslynSchool. Understandably, there is definitelya sense of competitiveness within ourplayers when we play in tournaments orduring exhibition games, but the ultimateend is to have fun.”Roslyn has a surprisingly deep hockeyhistory for an elementaryschool. Theschool had teams asfar back as the 1930sand once had an outdoorrink on itsgrounds. But even with thatkind of history, gettinga hockey programrunning at anyschool can be difficult– starting one atan elementaryschool took somecreative thinking.“There were issuesconcerning thesafety of the playersgetting to and from the rink during schooltime and ultimately the cost. Once therewas a buzz around school that a teammight be in the works, Brendan Kelly, whose daughter Devon would eventuallyparticipate, contacted the city and got ussome start-up time at the arena,” Sokalskiexplained.“The problem was the only availabletime that [the city could donate] was onFridays between 2 and 3:30 pm, so inorder to play, our skaters would have tomiss a good chunk of school. In the end,our teachers and parents were very supportiveof the positive benefits of this programfor the kids, and we were on our way.“After we used up our free hours, webooked more ice time every Fridaythrough to the end of February and evenFriends of the Westmount Libraryinvite you to theirQUALITY USED BOOK SALESat. & Sun. Thisbeing our second year, we saw 27 playerssign up – threebeing girls,”Sokalski said.Keane Kelly-Menard, 9, is acentre and playsboth with hisclassmates atRoslyn and intercitywith Westmount.“I like playingon the Roslynteam because it’sfun to play withmy friends fromschool. I also getto play differentteams than theteams I normally play with my Westmountteam,” he said.Giving kids just that opportunity is exactlywhat Sokalski and his colleagues aregoing for.“Our first priority as teachers is to educatethe student and show them how to begracious in victory or defeat, and what itmeans to work to achieve success. Wehope that through the positive environmentwe provide we will see our playersgrow as individuals – caring, tolerant andfair,” he said.“So far, as our second season is ending, the enthusiasm shown by our players andparents has been encouraging. With her oldestbeing 11, she is no stranger to long soccerregistration wait times but, this year,“there’s no comparison.”Including four evenings, there werenine days open this year to register kidsfor activities ranging from tee ball to dancelessons, said Mike Deegan, director ofSports, Recreation and CommunityEvents. Not only that, he continued, Westmounterswho came in during the openinghours were guaranteed a spot on ateam and in nearly every class. However, the popular Introduction to theMusic World classes remain first-come,first-served as there is still a limitedamount of space available. The city is able to guarantee a spot onthe sports teams by allowing more flexibilityin the practice and game times, heexplained, so organizers can create additionalteams if needed. While days will remainas advertised, additional teams meanactual times may be rearranged to giveeverybody equal playtime.Spots in socio-cultural classes, such asart and dance, are guaranteed because instructorsare willing to take on a few extrastudents if necessary, said Deegan. As long as everybody gets a fair chanceto register and equal playtime, parentKatie Pothier said she is happy with thenew system, and she isn’t too concernedabout the potential shift in times. LikeWeitzman, she said signing up was abreeze. “It was so much easier this year,”she said. “It was a huge time saver.”However, registration for the fall/winterice-based activities will not be changing,as ice times are less flexible, saidDeegan.

The painting was done using his fingers.By Ralph ThompsonThe vernissage launching the openingnight of Anthony Hobbs’ exhibit “Ciel etterre” drew a crowd at The Gallery at VictoriaHall, March 24.The artist enjoyed a career as a graphicartist but never abandoned his love ofpainting.Born in Southampton, England, Hobbsstudied art, design and illustration at St.Martin’s School of Art in London. In 1968,he moved to Montreal, where he establishedhis career in graphic design andlater later taught the discipline at DawsonCollege and Concordia.Started painting early“I started painting at an early age,” heexplained. “I loved landscapes but have alwaysexperimented. For example, “Ciel etterre #24” was painted with my fingers.I’ve painted very large images of fruit, butlooking closely at the surface of the fruit, Isee the same textures and lines as I see inmy abstract landscapes.”The exhibition runs until Wednesday,April 21. He was from StrathconaAve. and still remembers the big hillin Murray Park.“In winter it was tobogganing andbuilding jumps,” he recalls. “And in thesummer we’d build these wagons withsort of steering wheels and we’d race downthe hill. That was all good fun.”Now, Macklem likes getting fresh airwith his wife and three teenagers whenhe’s not at the office – sailing, swimmingand winter sports. “Teenagers will onlyspend so much time with their parents, sothere are limits there,” he says with asmall laugh. He returns regularly from Ottawa forvisits in Montreal, where his two youngersisters still live. His parents, Janet andDick Macklem, have stayed in Westmounton Metcalfe Ave.“One thing my parents reinforced tome regularly was that we were fortunate, and that this came with certain responsibilities,”Macklem said, highlighting theeffort his parents made to strengthen theircommunity and less fortunate people –and how this influenced him.“As I became interested in economics,I saw the potential for it to contribute topublic policy, and really believe that athoughtful, carefully-done economicanalysis was a very important input topublic policy and certainly that public policyis very important to the well-being ofCanadians.”Macklem began working for the Bankof Canada in 1989 when he finished hisPhD. He held various positions there, includingadvisor to the governor, up until2003 when he moved to the department ofFinance. He returned to the Bank asdeputy governor in 2004, and rejoined thefederal government in 2007.The Bank of Canada’s board of directorsannounced Macklem’s appointmentas senior deputy governor this February.Macklem will be the bank’s chief operatingofficer, and second in rank to GovernorMark Carney.Tiff Macklem, right, at the opening ceremony of the G7 finance ministers and central bank governorsmeeting held in Iqaluit beginning of February.
