Fellow Nomads,The Captain’s TaleMarch 2012As we hoped for, playing at Humewood, the “Golfing Gods”dished up some wonderful weather and the wind blew... Thereare some who can play in these conditions, and 15% of thecompetitors actually got cut where 36% gained shots - but theaverage for the day was 29 points - how they do it I don’t know...The course was in great condition, so well done to the greens staff on presentinga wonderful track to play on!I had the pleasure of playing with the president of Humewood, David Reed & hadKerry Bosch and Andrew Riley not been so lucky, I would finally have collectedsome money this year, but alas, the least said the better. It is always a privilege to be able to give credit where it is due, and I had thehonour of handing out 2 “300 game” badges to Neale Kunhardt and Neville Botha- well done gentleman - that is a great achievement in anyone’s books! One the same day, I could hand out a 25 year tie to Phillip Leyland - he seems tohave been around a lot longer than that and we look forward to many more yearsPhillip

Kens Korner - February 2012The day started out as most other days in ourbeautiful city, quite normal with a slight southeasterlybreeze, clear skies and a comfortablemidday forecast of 24oC. When compared to thehighs experienced during the week, Sunday'sconditions looked ideal. The arrival at Humewood was magnificent asalways with the emerald green surrounds enveloping one as you pulledinto the car-park. The immaculate putting green was tantalisinginviting and even kind in allowing the odd-dropped practice putt; neveronce did any of this give any indication of the treacherous angles andlines that would be offered up during the day's play. Mother Naturekept her treachery out of sight and so well disguised that, judgingfrom the “pick-3” success, many were tricked into a false sense ofsuperiority that the “mighty” Humewood would be tamed by the ourmarry band. How wrong we were!!On the day the course offered up everything that a links has to offer;some good and some not so good on the day. On the good side, thecourse is in great condition and all praise to the management andground staff for maintaining the “links” in a challenging and immaculatecondition. From my perspective on the not-so-good side, about all Ican remember of the actual game is that the south-easterly blew andblew and then blew some more.I had invited awork colleague ofmine to play andwas paired againstIan Gibbs and LouisSnetler.Regrettably myvisitor had towithdraw at thelast minute and we

Kens Korner - February 2012 (Cont.)wound up playing as a 3-ball. To say that we played as a 3-ball isprobably incorrect, as Ian and Louis dove-tailed together as the bestplayingpair whilst I huffed and puffed along in the rear. I ended uppaying everyone and if it wasn't for Jason's inimitable golfing prowessand my last gasp par on the 9th, I came very close to collecting mysecond teddie in double the number of months. Besides the bestplayingpair, Ian was runner-up in his division and only afterwards did Idiscover that they are Gary Player partners.Bruce Harran provided an excellent service as our course marshall and, despite being completely blown away, the field moved through at a nicepace. I did notice that the discretionary “Lite” time between comingoff the course and the arrival of the final “champagne” 4-ball blew pastall too quickly. What a great way to recognise a 300-game milestone;congratulations Neale and Burkie, together you have served Nomads for76 years.Until next time,KenBDTEngineering Services ccGeneral Precision Engineering Fabrication in all SteelsBruce Watson082 557 8659COMSEC Centre Old Grahamstown Road SydenhamPO Box 3989 North End Port Elizabeth 6056Tel/Fax: (041) 484-1003 Email: watsonb@telkomsa.netBuddingtrade 87 (Pty) LtdBMW DealerMINI DealerBMW Motorrad DealerPostal addressP.O. 777 Checking in - February 2012Fellow Nomads,4 March 2012, Humewood Golf Club, gale force windsand 80 crazy Nomads testing their skills against thecourse and the elements. What a day, endorsing theknowledge that Humewood is a course of differentnatures, depending on the strength of the wind. Sunday was one ofthose days that the course got its own back on you with a stiff westerlywind to complicate matters. The course was in stunning condition andthe smooth greens were made all the more tricky by the strength of thewind. This factor did not take any of the enjoyment out of the day andwe look forward to our next game at the “links”.Special mention must go to Neale Kunhardt and Neville Botha whoboth received their 300 game badges as well as a celebratory glass ofbubbly together with their playing fourball on the 18th green. Thissurrounded by fellow Nomads who gave them a standing ovation.Congratulations Gents! It was really nice to see their “better halves”present at prize giving together with Burk Williams and Peter Hall andtheir wives. Great camaraderie between the fourball. Also on hand toreceive his 25 year tie was Past Captain, Phillip Leyland, congratulations Phill. The use of Bruce Harran as marshal on the course appeared to havehelped the speed of play as the game was played at a brisk pace, despite the wind. Thank you Bruce and great to see you back inNomads gear. The prizegiving went off well as we tried to start mattersas early as possible so that we could all get home at a decent time. This prizegiving took a bit longer than normal with the celebrationsmentioned above as well as the send-off of our Eastern Cape NomadsTeam who embark on their trip to Port Shepstone from Friday 9 March. We wish the team well and safe travel as they try to bring home theBert Hunt Trophy.StuartStuart
