commercial newsobstacle courses, climbing structures etcto the pool.”However in Europe, a state-of-the-artsafety standard recognised by more than27 countries has been created.“The standard took four years to createand is what these aquatic professionalshave been looking for when choosingand operating an inflatable,” saysRomann Rademacher (Vice Chairmanof the European Community (EC)committee on safety for inflatables usedon water. The standard specifies safetyrequirements and test methods relatedto materials, safety and performance thatcan easily be adopted by other countries’aquatic facilities. The standard (EN 15649) is distributedby the European Standardizationoffice and can be downloaded forexample at www.beuth.de or go to www.splashmagazine.com.au for a QuickLink. “Many well-known inflatablebrands such as Intex or Sevylor arealso following these standards here inEurope,” says Rademacher. The EN 15649 Standard clearlyWarning symbols and product infodefines required water depth, entrapmenthazards, intended users, mandatorywarning label requirements, etc.We noticed that many of the “constantair running tracks” commonly used inthe US were installed right on poolsedge and yet the EN 15649 Standardstates no inflatable should be with a 3mdistance of the pool’s edge. The intentionis to avoid the user falling or evenjumping from the product and collidingwith the pool’s edge.“In addition we believe electricity andwater is a bad mix to begin with”, addsRademacher. The real strength of thestandard is that it has been validated byan independent test house.Aquatics safety experts are currentlyworking to craft similar standards forthe US. commercial newsproject that will interpret some of thetechnical information in EN 15649. Ourgoal, over the next few months, is to createa series of operating guidelines that ourclients (and others) can use to enhancetheir safety practices with these devices,”stated Michael Gurtler CEO of Safe Wise.“Wibit has been very helpful in our initialdiscussions and the information containedin EN 15649 will be very helpful.”As far as Australia goes, Royal Life Savingadvises that while there are genericstandards for inflatable devices, there areno specific standards for inflatables inaquatic environments.Additionally, there are OH&S regulationsthat would cover some elements, but nothing specific. Also, while RoyalLife Saving publishes the Guidelinesfor Safe Pool Operation which coversthe supervision of play equipment andinflatables, there are no guidelines asfar as they know relating to the manufactureand use of the inflatables, and inthose instances they direct people to themanufacturers’ instructions.SPLASH! will bring more on this issuein the next edition.Quick inspectionchecks:1. Does the inflatable use warningsymbols (pictograms) which arevisible on the product?2. The inflatable should be anchored(or tethered) at least 3m from anyside of the pool.3. commercial featureWaterparks and shopping malls:a symbiotic relationshipChristina DiMartino investigates the growingtrend for shopping centres and aquaticcentres to be built close to each other, anddiscovers that when it’s successful, bothparties can be beneficiaries. However, success is not guaranteed.Shopping centre and mall developersdecide to build waterparks in oradjacent to their facilities for oneobvious reason: to increase traffic flow tothe area. Over the past several years, numerouswaterparks have been developedat shopping mall locations in the UnitedStates. Some say the trend is growing, while others report that they are not assuccessful as hoped.Jeff Epstein, director of marketing forWhiteWater West Industries Global in Richmond,British Columbia, Canada, explainedthat the company engages in the conceptualplanning and design of waterparks. Thecompany also designs the rides and otherwater attractions.“Once a shopping mall developer enjoyssuccess with one waterpark, it looks intoadding them at other shopping venues,” saysEpstein. “When a waterpark is attached to,inside of or adjacent to a shopping mall, thefacility is typically marketed as an entertainmentdestination. When constructed indoors, they can be marketed year-round, regardlessof the climate.”Epstein says that although some shoppingmall-waterpark developments areWorld Waterpark is visible from two levelsof the shopping mall, attracting visitors andproviding entertainment for shoppersreporting great successes, he feels it is notan emerging trend.“Some developers report two limitations:the cost per square metre of real estate atmost shopping malls, and the fact that goingto a waterpark takes some commitment intime and effort,” he says. “Unless a mother isready to spend two to three hours at the waterparkwith her kids, she’s not likely willing toget into her bathing suit. Dry play is far moreattractive in many cases due to its spontaneousnature.”There are alternatives to an elaboratelyequipped waterpark, however, and Epsteinsays these can be highly successful.“AquaPlay interactive wet play structuresare an easier alternative to full-on waterparks,”he says. “These cater to youngerages and parents don’t need to accompanytheir kids on the structures, although theymust be there to supervise. Mum doesn’thave to change into a bathing suit; she canwatch her kids from the sideline.”74 | SPLASH! www.splashmagazine.com.au

commercial featureCompared to dry play areas, Epstein points out that wet play structuresare more expensive to acquire and operate, they are less spontaneousand potentially more seasonal depending on the climate.“WhiteWater has worked on Cowabunga Bay in Druper, Utah, andother concepts that use the waterpark to drive traffic into the mall,”says Epstein. “But the relation is one of spin-off benefits, not combinedretail-recreation behaviour. For example, if you force patrons toenter the waterpark via the mall, or you situate food courts and retailaround the waterpark entry or exit, you’re more likely to benefit fromwaterpark traffic.”WhiteWater has offices in several countries, including in Australia.Epstein says waterpark-shopping mall combinations are a small blipon the Australian landscape today.“There is increased interest in Australia, however,” he says. “Thecountry is following the tides of North America in this regard. WhitewaterWest Australia has already added to our project list with therecent installation of an AquaPlay structure at the Sydney OlympicPark Aquatic Centre, and it expects to be confirming other newprojects in the near future.”An artist’s impression of shoppers andsurfers sharing space at Lotte WorldJamsil in Seoul, South KoreaMULTICOLOURED LED LIGHTSAdd a new level of ambienceto your pool with BritestreamMulticoloured LED lights. The Britestream MulticolouredLED light has been cleverlydesigned with a built in colourmemory, which means thatit always defaults to its lastcolour selection. The light’s super bright LEDsoperate on only 15 watts ofenergy with a lifespan of morethan 70,000 hours.Britestream Multicoloured LEDlights are available as a nicheor surface mount light.World Waterpark at West Edmonton MallWorld Waterpark is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is undisputedlyone of the most successful combination waterpark-shoppingmall facilities in the world. It opened in May 1986 with a 10megalitre indoor wave pool, claimed to be the world’s largest. FantasylandHotel, a 120-room hotel with rooms decorated around exoticlocations, is also located at the mall.“World Waterpark is visible from the mall’s two levels,” saysSheri Clegg, media and public relations coordinator for WestEdmonton Mall. “Shoppers can watch people playing in the surf, sliding and lounging around the pool 12 months a year. A viewingarea on the mall’s first level allows traffic to enter the waterparkand be immersed in the environment, creating a strongerimpulse market.”Clegg says World Waterpark is located in a facility that is all thingsto all people. For some, it’s a waterpark within a mall. commercial featurefor kids, families, children, grandchildren, teenagers and a number of other groups, providing it is designed to cater to theirneeds. During school days it should attractolder people as well as parents and caretakersof pre-school children to ensure thesetime slots are not empty. On weekends andafter school, the programming and rideswould presumably be different. The issue of “babysitting” can be aproblem if there are not clear guidelinescommunity facilities such as libraries, indoorsports courts, skate parks, BMX (bike)parks as well as fitness centres and serviceswhere the elderly can meet for a coffee, docrafts and buy and sell their wares. Suchmarkets are popular in parking lots, andsome also feature local food items.“Shopping malls and waterpark arestructures, and the key ingredient is people,”says Pontin. “If they are designed to enablepeople to connect, enjoy conversations and“If you force patrons to enter the waterpark via themall, or you situate food courts and retail around thewaterpark entry or exit, you’re more likely to benefitfrom waterpark traffic.”of potential sites, planning, design, funding, implementation, marketing, promotion andmanagement audits for its clients.Denis Pontin is CEO of the company. Hesays that in many cases, major leisure andsporting venues are empty and have relativelylow use outside of weekends and holidays.“Placing waterparks adjacent to or in thevicinity of shopping malls provides a readymarket,” he says. “The water park or otherattraction can entice customers to travelfrom a much larger demographic catchment. The isochrones, or catchment, for ashopping mall is probably less than for amajor destination waterpark. This meansthat people are willing to travel further tothe mall and theme park than if the mallwas just a shopping complex.”Pontin explains that isochrones are thetime taken to travel from the usual point ofdeparture such as work or home to the destination, including the time to park, sit in trafficand so on. Major barriers such as freeways, railway lines and bush or parkland may resultin an area being a “black spot” rather than asymmetrical 15km radius around the mall/theme park. He says an example is the catchmentof West Edmonton Mall, compared toother major shopping malls in Canada.“The role of the shopping mall may be asa destination that caters to the elderly andthe very young, as well as school children, teens and those who work at the mall or aresuppliers or contractors,” says Pontin. “Eachgroup has needs, and these needs should bethought through and adequately catered to.For example, retailers that are paying highrents will often complain about the number ofelderly who go to the mall in summer to escapethe heat, be part of the community andhave an exciting place to visit, but they don’tmake purchases. They also complain aboutyoung people who hang out, skateboard andshoplift, and generally cause a nuisance. These groups have not been catered to.”A waterpark provides a partial solutionto both these issues, according to Pontin. It provides a place where older people canwatch the users of the park, if it is designedto enable this to happen. It also providesthrill-seeking and entertainment and leisurefor ensuring entry with a responsible adult, provision of supervisors for programs to givecaretakers a break—at a cost—and othersimilar strategies.“It must be child and adult friendly,” Pontinsays. “This means adequate support servicesand facilities. The Disneyland model is agood one for a design of support areas andsystems that ensure a positive experience.”Pontin stresses that one of the negativesis the price point. In many cases the entrycost of a waterpark is so high that lowerincome families can only afford to visit onceor twice a year.“Shopping malls have the existing infrastructure, such as car parking, toilets, cafesand book shops, as well as bus – and sometimestrain or light rail – access,” he says.“These amenities are already in place for thewaterpark’s use. The community should beserved by shops and malls so large themeor waterparks fit the model.”Pontin also feels that shopping malls are,in effect, small towns, and they should haveInteractive wet play areas in shopping centresare an alternative to full-on waterparksbuild a sense of belonging to a community, then they work. If they are designed withoutunderstanding the experience that can bepart of the visit for people of all ages, anddon’t allow people to readily identify withareas and programs and facilities that areappropriate for them, they will not be successfulin the long term and will not assistthe community to grow in the short term.”Profitability, Pontin says, will come from thecreation of a mall and waterpark that has excellencein its physical design, right through tothe quality and appropriateness of its amenitiesand services, excellence in the way it ismanaged and staffed to recognise people andto encourage them to have fun, socialise andfind spaces and places that meet their needs.“In short, I think there needs to be leadershipin the design of malls and associateddevelopments like waterparks,” he says. “Theyshould build a community by catering to theneeds of people to interact, have fun, feel safe, identify value and be encouraged to participatein an environment. They should also be a placewhere people can purchase food, whitegoodsand clothing; watch fashion parades, meetspecial people, read books, purchase localproduce and participate in sport, culture andrecreational activities in a social setting.”80 | SPLASH! www.splashmagazine.com.au

Dive intothe latestsplash!enews toDay!www.splashmagazine.com.auEnviro friendly hot tubUkko Saunas & Tubs have introduced three new ranges all aimedat saving money and helping the environment. The first range is the Xcelsior Range which uses a new style ofpump designed locally to utilise the heat created by the pumpvia a heat exchanger. This reduces the size of the heater elementrequired from 3kW to 1kW. The element and controller are thenincluded as part of the pump rather than a separate unit reducingthe cost of the equipment. There is the added benefit as well thatthe reduced power consumption means that the entire tub can beplugged into a standard 10amp power point rather than having tobe hard wired at the switchboard. This range is followed by the Enviro Range which replaces theuse of electricity for heating with either Natural or LPG gas. Withthe cost of electricity constantly rising these tubs will also save onrunning costs. The last range is the Luxury Range which introduces the use ofelectrical sanitisation to reduce the volume of chemicals needed, thereby extending the life of the water, once again saving moneywhile conserving one of our most precious resources. As with previous tubs, the new Ukko Tubs use hydrogen-peroxide-basedchemicals which are environmentally neutral rather thanthe more damaging chlorine or bromine. These chemicals haveno odour and are non-allergenic plus they are manufactured by anAustralian company. For more information call (02) 9676 7474 or visit www.ukkotubs.com.Sign up for the freeSPLASH! eNewsletterGet important news deliveredinto your inbox each month andstay informed about your industry.Attractive advertising packages arealso available for the eNewsletter -to find out more, contact KarenJaques on (02) 8586 6135 or emailkjaques@intermedia.com.au84 | SPLASH! www.splashmagazine.com.au

product releaseNew Megatube seriesWhiteWater West has launched the new Megatuberaft series. The core feature of the patent-pending Megatubeseries is a massive 6m diameter fullyenclosed flume set at a transverse angle tothe slide path. Rafts drop down a steep rampinto the Megatube, gaining speed and climbingup to 3m as riders oscillate up and downthe inner walls, splashing and screaming theirway down the waterslide. You can add multiple Megatubes of varyinglength and shape, and combine with otherWhiteWater waterslides like the Abyss or theFamily Boomerango to create a Super Raft Ride.In fact, the Megatube is large enough that another flume can actually pass through it, creating a truly sensationalattraction for riders and spectators alike. There is the possibility an AquaLoop rider could hurtle down atranslucent SilkTek flume, passing through the Megatube just as a group of surprised raft riders goes by below. The first two MEGAtube rides are the Viper, a three-person raft ride, and the Python, a six-person raftride.
